ST The Rise of Skywalker - Reviews/Reactions Thread (See Warning On Page 98)

Ok with cast screenings and no doubt others taking place before the official release date I thought I'd make a thread for reviews whether that be from invited guests to early screening or from us when release date finally arrives.
Richard E Grant has just given his thoughts on it - "I've just seen Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker and... Nothing prepares you for this. I cheered, I shouted, I fist pumped the air, I cried, I stood and cheered. It's absolutely everything you hoped it was going to be. I'm so proud to be in it. And I can't wait for you to see it."

The only reviews that matter will be Richard Brody's and Armond White's.

 

Brody is a hack of a critic, and I can’t understand why the New Yorker keeps him around. Anthony Lane is not far behind him. AO Scott from the New York Times is much more insightful, IMO.

 

I wouldn't consider reactions from cast members to be reviews, but YMMV.

You've gotta love Armond White. He's like the Andy Kaufman of critics.

 

A masterpiece, interesting. It will have to do something very special to be given such an accolade. When can we expect critic reviews? 12/12?

I’ve already seen it. It has nice colors and shapes in it and good sounds.

 

Honestly, who is intersted in ctritics that gave TLJ 91% on RT while they gave movies like e.g. Alita 61% or Midway 43%

 

Wait, is Midway a good movie? It looks so, so bad.

I dug Alita for the most part.

Midway, indeed, looks so, so banging-head-against-brick-wall-worthy. Man, what is it with these Pacific WWII flicks getting all Bay-ified/Emmerich-ified? Kinda depressing, given both Pearl Harbor & Midway have some decent acting talent.

Still not sure what that's got to do with critical reviews for tRoS, other than, you know, it's likely gonna be the same general outcome, tRoS hovering around 90% same as the other two and contrasting with way-worse movies at 40-something.

 

"Best SW film since Empire Strikes Back"

 

This tag has ALWAYS pissed me off.

Why?

Because way back in time, when Empire came out, everyone hated and was mad at that damn movie. This was before cinematic universes were expected to leave you with a cliffhanger, and all we knew was that Luke got his hand chopped off, Han got frozen and sent to the hutt gangster, and the good guys LOST, and it didn't sit right with anyone.

There was no internet then, so we had to write letters and mail them to magazines like Starlog to complain, and complain we did.

The best since Empire? Feh. That tell us old-school fans that it's guaranteed to be ...poodoo.

 

John Boyega's reaction is a bit......troubling?
"A lot to take in"......makes me think of TLJ.

 

Funny, nobody (I’m counting people I knew here, not reviewers) hated the film that I can recall. Many were shocked, and some irritated that they’d have to wait three years before finding out what happens next. But everyone I knew absolutely loved it. Star Wars (no episode number when I saw it) will always be my favourite, but general consensus amongst friends was Empire was the superior and more adult film.

 

I've never been disappointed by a JJ directed movie,but i'm nervous to say the least.I feel like a pinball with my emotions on what to believe.

 

Edit: Some of them seem very tired, like Daisy, Oscar and John.

 

Fun and satisfying....pretty neutral words.
