Hello With my attention attracted upon Moth Mothma and Bail Oregana, in Rogue One, I have re-watched and re-read parts of the script, from Revenge of the Sith. What I have noticed now, are some small things to which I gave no importance in the past. I guess these are in the extended version of the movie, anyway, are found in the script. First: When Anakin Skywalker returns from saving Senator Palpatine ,at the start of the movie,he is received by a delegation formed by Bail Oragana and Mace Windu,as most prominent persons there. Bail Oragana even has a small chat with Anakin: " 70 INT. CORUSCANT-SENATE OFFICE BUILDING-MAIN HALLWAY-LATE AFTERNOON ANAKIN is at the back of the crowd of SENATORS, talking with BAIL ORGANA. R2-D2 and C-3PO scoot along ahead of them. BAIL ORGANA: The end of Count Dooku will surely bring an end to this war, and an end to the Chancellor's draconian security measures. ANAKIN: I wish that were so, but the fighting is going to continue until General Grievous is spare parts . . . The Chancellor is very clear about that. BAIL ORGANA: I'll do everything I can with the Senate." So, Bail Organa was not liking too much the measures that Chancellor was taking? He was not liking the war? As we will see from the next scene,no, Bail Organa was not talking actually about war. So, we have the scene 81,not far from scene 70: "81 INT. CORUSCANT-BAIL ORGANA'S OFFICE-DAY PADME, BAIL ORGANA, and SENATORS MON MOTHMA, FANG ZAR, TERR TANEEL, and GIDDEAN DANU sit in Senator Organa 's office. BAIL ORGANA: Now that he has control of the Jedi Council, the Chancellor has appointed Governors to oversee all star systems in the Republic. FANG ZAR: When did this happen? BAIL ORGANA: The decree was posted this morning. PADME: Do you think he will dismantle the Senate? MON MOTHMA: Why bother? As a practical matter, the Senate no longer exists. GIDDEAN DANU: The constitution is in shreds. Amendment after amendment . . . executive directives, sometimes a dozen in one day. BAIL ORGANA: We can't let a thousand years of democracy disappear without a fight. EVERYONE looks at each other, a little worried at the implications of what was just said. TERR TANEEL: What are you suggesting? BAIL ORGANA: I apologize. I didn't mean to sound like a Separatist. MON MOTHMA: We are not Separatists trying to leave the Republic. We are loyalists, trying to preserve democracy in the Republic. BAIL ORGANA: It has become increasingly clear to many of us that the Chancellor has become an enemy of democracy. PADME: I can't believe it has come to this! Chancellor Palpatine is one of my oldest advisors. He served as my Ambassador when I was Queen. GlDDEAN DANU: Senator, I fear you underestimate the amount of corruption that has taken hold in the Senate. MON MOTHMA: The Chancellor has played the Senators well. They know where the power lies, and they will do whatever it takes to share in it. Palpatine has become a dictator and we have helped him to do it. BAIL ORGANA: We can't sit around debating any longer, we have decided to do what we can to stop it. Senator Mon Mothma and I are putting together an organization . . . PADME: Say no more. Senator Organa. I understand. At this point, it's better to leave some things unsaid. BAIL ORGANA: Yes. I agree and we must not discuss this with anyone, without everyone in this group agreeing. MON MOTHMA: That means those closest to you . . . even family ... no one can be told. They ALL nod their heads. PADME considers this for a moment. PADME: Agreed." What we are finding out here is that actually Bail Organa and Mon Mothma are very disturbed by the fact Chancellor can do what he likes, without their permission. They have no problem with the destructive war that brings misery and deaths to millions in Galaxy. Even more, Bail Organa likes wars, he wants to just start another war. Mon Mothma is despising the Jedis and the Jedi order and think they are just some elite soldiers, that listen without questioning everything is ordered to them. Jedi Council have no idea about what is happening in the Senate, because they Jedi Masters ,not politicians. Even more, the people from the room are instructed to not talk with anyone about these things, not even with "their family" , with direct link to Padme. Padme could have informed Anakin about what Palpatine is doing, because Anakin did not knew either, that Palpatine took so much power in the Senate. So, from how I see things, the acts of Mon Mothma, especially, are a strong cause of the falling of Anakin to the Dark Side and of the destruction of the most of the Jedi Order. Bail Organa wants to fight for a cause, just because he likes wars. Jedis would have been very careful , if they would have find out that Palpatine took so much power in the Senate and want to control them also. There are a lot more things that can be written on this matters, but I will stop here.
Liked this for the dialogue! Very interesting, I think I only watched that deleted scene once so I'd forgotten most of it! However, the parts about Bail/Mothma/Jedi make no sense to me, and at the moment I disagree. Care to elaborate? I think by 'fight', Bail means verbal opposition. As they say, the Chancellor effectively controls the Senate to the point where it doesn't exist as a democracy anymore, and they want to change that. Only in Rogue One do they realise/agree that war is the only option - in RotS they didn't anticipate that Palpatine was a Sith Lord who is about to wipe out the Jedi. I imagine they were more confident about a peaceful resolution because the Jedi were still present, and to be honest I can't see Bail not speaking to Yoda or Kenobi about it after making their stance official. How is Mothma responsible for Anakin's turn? I think Padme realises Anakin won't believe her anyway (the Chancellor is like a father figure to him and so he trusts him completely). He would probably deflect it, saying that it will all change when the war is over. He might even tell the Chancellor what she told him! I think the Jedi do realise the Senate is affected and corrupt, they saw that a bit in AotC when they called for emergency powers. The scene with Mace and Yoda overseeing the chamber springs to mind, they both looked disturbed by the outcome. Though I agree, I doubt they realised the extent of it, as unlike Bail they probably were not present at each gathering. They have bigger priorities like winning the war, and that combined with the dark side's shroud would not have helped them sense the troubles in the Senate.
I think George Lucas wants to say that were more causes that permitted Palpatine/Darth Sidious to be able to kill most of the Jedis and take the supreme power over the Senate. And one of these causes was the fact that it was no politician to oppose very seriously against the ascension of Senator Palpatine. Also, the lack of communication about senators that are not seduced by Palpatine and the Jedi order. If Bail Organa or Mon Mothma would have go to inform one of the very wise Jedis - Master Yoda, Master Mace Windu or Master Obi Wan, about how Palpatine get more and more power, is possible that they would have realized that Palpatine is Darth Sidious. Mace Windu is extremely wise and he already says that,I cite : "the dark side of the force surrounds the Chancellor". He also notices that Palpatine has stayed a very long time, over the normal term,as supreme Chancellor. Sure, Darth Sidious is deceiving people and he is behind the separatists. The fact that Darth Sidious is deceiving people is clear as day light. The fact that Anakin gets too attached of Padme and loves power too much,is also clear as daylight. But besides those causes is a lack of communication between Organa and Jedis, that leads to the fact that Jedis have no clue about how much power Palpatine acquires in the Senate. This is what Lucas tells even if not so clear. Mon Mothma is depicted as an arrogant person . Organa is presented as a person that is quite direct and with a warm heart and modest, talking to every person, he likes fights and he also likes Jedis. However, Organa have no idea that Jedis are not actually warriors, that Jedis are pursuing in fact spiritual enlightenment. Is quite clear that Organa listens to the request of Anakin. Question is, why Mon Mothma does not go in the Senate, to speak about her concerns ,to express her disagreement towards the fact Palpatine has too much power? Yes, a committee comes to Palpatine to express their concern about the naming of governors, directly,by Palpatine. However, this committee does not include Mon Mothma. Which shows Mon Mothma thinks that Palpatine could not be stopped by any other method than starting another separatist movement and starting a fight against The Republic. Padme is the only enlightened politician presented, she is wise, she cares about all people, she dislikes wars etc. She is charmed by Anakin and trusts Anakin too much,so she is not informing the Jedi Council about what is Senator Palpatine doing. Question is, if the Jedis would have found out earlier that Palpatine is Darth Sidious would they have done different, would master Yoda together with Mace Windu and Obi Wan to capture him>
Well, looking again Revenge of the Sith I have noticed that Bail Organa has a very important role in saving Master Yoda. He also greatly helps Obi Wan. So,I guess,we have Bail Organa as one of important characters in Rogue One, as Disney wants to attract our attention towards Organa. Have not studied too much about Mon Mothma. I have see a sequence where Obi Wan tells Anakin , that,I cite : "OBI-WAN: In short, they are going very well. Saleucami has fallen, and Master Vos has moved his troops to Boz Pity. ANAKIN: What's wrong then? OBI-WAN: The Senate is expected to vote more executive powers to the Chancellor today. ANAKIN: Well, that can only mean less deliberating and more action. Is that bad? It will make it easier for us to end this war. OBI-WAN: Anakin, be careful of your friend Palpatine. ANAKIN: Be careful of what? OBI-WAN: He has requested your presence. ANAKIN: What for? OBI-WAN: He would not say. ANAKIN: He didn't inform the Jedi Council? That's unusual, isn't it? OBI-WAN: All of this is unusual, and it's making me feel uneasy. You're probably aware that relations between the Council and the Chancellor are stressed. ANAKIN: I know the Council has grown wary of the Chancellor's power, mine also for that matter. Aren't we all working together to save the Republic? Why all this distrust? OBI-WAN: The Force grows dark, Anakin, and we are all affected by it. Be wary of your feelings." So Anakin have a lot of faith in Senator Palpatine. Organa seems to have warned Obi Wan,at least, about Senate giving more powers to Senator Palpatine. From Rogue One we find out that Bail Organa and Obi Wan are friends. However,I highly doubt Obi Wan have informed the Jedi Council about Senator Palpatine getting more powers,in the Senate. In the following conversation, Obi Wan does not thinks to tell Master Yoda and Mace Windu, about Chancelor getting more power. Leaving aside that Obi Wan should have informed the Jedi Council about this,Obi Wan do not tell this even to Master Yoda and Mace Windu: " YODA, MACE, and OBI-WAN ride in the GUNSHIP as it heads for the Clone landing platform. Mace and Obi-Wan are sitting. OBI-WAN : Anakin did not take to his assignment with much enthusiasm. YODA: Too much under the sway of the Chancellor, he is. Much anger there is in him. Too much pride in his powers. MACE: It's very dangerous, putting them together. I don't think the boy can handle it. I don't trust him. OBI-WAN: He'll be all right. I trust him with my life. MACE:I wish I did. OBI-WAN: With all due respect, Master, is he not the Chosen One? Is he not to destroy the Sith and bring balance to the Force? MACE: So the prophecy says. YODA: A prophecy . . . that misread could have been. OBI-WAN: He will not let me down. He never has."
