Title: The Senator and The Spy

Summary: Raised to do the biding of her Imperial masters, Mara Jade is tasked with an undercover mission of posing as Senator Organa's new aide in hopes of infiltrating the Rebellion. From there, everything in her life will never be the same again...

Author's Note: I recently finished Lighting the Way Home, a short story on the Beyond the Saga boards when I was given the idea of going with a more standard pairing than I did there. This is the result. Hope you like it and if you want to receive PMs, let me know and you'll get one. I tend to keep those fairly religiously.

Prologue

Poliss Massa, 19BBY

?What of the children?? Obi-Wan?s voice was hushed and raw at the question. The children that he spoke of had lost everything in their little lives before they were even a minute old.

Their father, they had lost to the ravages of the dark side and more than likely, death. Their mother, they had lost to death after child birth. Now, it only seemed a question of what further the infant twins would lose. And that decision rested in the hands of the three beings gathered in the room where they rested together as a small group of medical droids tended to them and their dead mother.

?Separated they should be. Protect them from the Sith, we must.?

Obi-Wan quietly nodded his understanding at Yoda?s decision. He knew that this was likely what would have to be done to protect them from the Emperor and possibly their father, if he had survived Mustafar. While the wearied Jedi Master was quite certain that Vader was no more, no chances could be taken. If the Sith were ever to be defeated or the children kept safe from the fate of their father, there was no other choice. They would have to be separated and kept ignorant of their heritage until the time was right when they might come to know of it. Now, it was only a matter of where they would go.

?I?ll take the boy. My wife and I have always wanted to adopt a baby boy. He will be loved by us.?

For a brief moment, Obi-Wan and Yoda both looked to the Alderaanian Senator who had already helped them so much since this whole catastrophe had been unleashed upon an unsuspecting Galaxy and Jedi Order. He had saved them and ferried them to this place to try and save the life of Padme Amidala. Bail Organa had already risked so much on behalf of the Jedi and now was willing to help perhaps two of its remaining masters to protect a piece of their future from harm. And it offered them the perfect hiding place for one of the orphaned Skywalker twins. In plain sight but hidden from view. That only left the fate of his younger sister to decide.

With a mere nod, the wizened ancient master nodded his ascent to that decision. Obi-Wan couldn?t venture to guess what they would do with the girl at this point. There could be no training that much was obvious to him. If little Leia Skywalker remained in the custody of either he or Yoda, they would be too tempted to start training the girl in earnest. That only increased the likely hood that the Sith would learn of the children?s existence and try to twist them to their own purposes. That could not be allowed under any circumstances. So, the soon-to-be renamed Luke Organa would be hidden, so his twin Leia Skywalker must be hidden and remain untrained.

?What of the girl?? he then asked.

Yoda sighed heavily, as if giving the matter the deepest of thought and consideration. No doubt he was carefully weighing the options before them, which were few indeed. He then spoke.

?To Tatooine, to her family take her.?

Obi-Wan nodded in understanding before replying, ?I will go to Tatooine and watch over her.?

With that, preparations were swiftly underway to separate the two children. Whisked off to opposite ends of the galaxy, they quite possibly would never see each other again. But

 

Very intriguing beginning.

I like the idea of Luke going to Alderaan and Leia to Tatooine.

[i]Coruscant, Imperial Palace~ 18 years later or 1 BBY[/i]

Another mission, another success. She thought to herself after pulling her shuttle into the private hangers of the Imperial Palace reserved only for highly placed courtiers of the Court or highly placed agents of the Emperor, such as herself, various Dark Jedi, or Inquisitors that served the Emperor himself.

Of course, there were rumours that there were more agents known as Emperor?s Hands than simply herself but Mara had never paid them any heed. After all, few within the Imperial hierarchy had ever even heard of the term, let alone ever met the only one. She had been the only one qualified enough or even raised from early childhood for this specific role. No, the rumours were wrong. Mara Jade was the only Emperor?s Hand and anyone else who was stupid enough to claim that they were obviously deluded or idiots.

What made Mara special enough to claim the title alone was her ability to hear the Emperor?s call through the Force from wherever she was in the Galaxy. Through that connection, she received her orders and communicated her successes. And her successes had given her a record of undisputed success. There seemed to be no challenge that so far had been too great for her to overcome. And after this last mission, tracking down a traitor Moff who intended to try to hide his efforts to funnel information to the Black Sun in exchange for millions of credits, she was almost looking forward to a bit of downtime.

It wasn?t as if Mara wouldn?t do as instructed and go on another mission immediately if her Master warranted it. Far from it. She would go where she was ordered, do as she was ordered, and perform her assigned tasks to the best of her abilities. But after six consecutive missions that had taken months of hard, exhaustive work to complete properly, Mara didn?t think it too much to hope for a little bit of a vacation.

Not that she would ever say so out loud before the Emperor. Though she respected her Master greatly, she knew better than to anger him on purpose. Getting shocked by Force lightning for various transgressions was never a very pleasant way to spend one?s time.

[i]My Hand...Was your mission to Ord Mantell a success? [/i]

Mara briefly cursed under her breath at the sound of her Master?s voice inside of her head and quickly brought her mental shields forward to protect her briefly touchy thoughts. After that was done, she answered quickly and concisely, as was her typical manner in answering her Master?s summons or questions.

[i]Yes, Master. Moff Clavex is no more. I have also traced six bank accounts where he deposited the funds he received from the Black Sun. Do you wish me to pursue the matter further?
[/i]
The seemed to be a brief pause in her Master?s response and she could almost feel the pressure there inside of her head as he weighed the pros and cons of sending his most highly placed agent to deal with the matter further. That was one of the few things Mara had always found unsettling about this connection. That she could feel her Master?s darkness and emotions so clearly, feel the effects they had on her mind. It also could be quite unpleasant.

[i]No, I shall send someone else to investigate this matter further. Your services are required elsewhere, on a mission of vital importance to the future of the Empire. You will come before me in an hour. Do not be late, my Hand. [/i]

With understanding, Mara nodded to her unseen Master and quickly departed for her quarters to clean up after a long flight back to Coruscant. She evidently had a mission to prepare for and the fact that it was stressed as of ?vital importance?, meant that it had to be a challenging and possibly long-term assignment. And the thought of a challenge, in spite of her need for a little rest, was proving too irresistible for her not to start feeling a little bit giddy at the thought of it.

Rest

 

She truly hoped Organa was inept or hopelessly naive. The sooner she could uncover those ties, the sooner this mission would be at an end.

These story is off to a wonderful start! I?d like to be on the PM list.

 

I'm not usually a fan of role reversal stories, for me it should always be Luke that defeats Vader on the Death Star, but im a big enough fan of L/M fics that i read whatever i can find. But if you DO have it being Leia on the DS and Luke on Endor, PLEASE have Luke learn to be a Jedi alongside Leia, i really dont want him floundering about needing 20 years plus to become a Knight like the EU writers did with Leia, i read 1 fic that was great up until the Death Star scene, but Luke's role in Vader's defeat and redemption was watered down quite a lot, which i didn't like much.

I love the idea of Mara being forced to become Luke's aide and I have a feeling he's going to have more of an impact on her than she can possibly imagine.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Interesting. I've found some role reversal stories I've read to be quite well-written, handling the change quite well. As for the other, yes that is a definite issue for me in much of the EU...quite a disappointing one too. I shall have to see what way it goes...I have read quite good stories that have them training as Jedi together during the OT timeframe. As for the rest, I shall try my best and we'll see how it goes.
