I'm really interested to see how this comes out, whether they're going to go for a more retro/minimalist approach with techniques/technology to harken back to the sound design of decades past, or whether we'll have sound design more similar to modern films.

How long does John Williams have to compose/record the score?

Mav Edit: There is alread a thread to discuss John Williams and the music of Episode 7. I'm going to lock this thread.

As long as he needs. I say they stick to his formula. If it ain't broke- don't fix it.

Probably the one thing PT haters DIDN'T have a problem with in the PT is the sound design. Well, except for droid voices, but that was an artistic choice.

The POD racers, ship engines, and lightsabers were all awesome. (though I'm sure someone out there complained about them)

The sound of the actors voices, especially in TPM, was such a distraction for me: young Anakin's exposition filled delivery, wooden Obi Wan and that grating Binks babble. Countless others who had annoying voices. I almost had to watch it with earplugs when these guys opened there mouths.

This needs to be addressed in the ST.

I hope you stretched and limbered up thoroughly before you attempted to file the performances of some actors in the prequel trilogy under "sound design." It's almost sorta impressive.

There's lotsa stuff to be worried about, but I wouldn't put either the score OR the sound design in that list. If Abrams is going so far as to try and match specific film stock to what was shot in 77, then I'm pretty sure he's not going to just shrug and let some bad sound-mixing/editing sneak past him. Hell, I don't even know if Skywalker Sound is capable of bad sound-mixing/editing. They're the go-to in the industry for a reason.

Yeah I think this is the one movie where this is absolutely not the thing to worry about. All of the SW films have had wonderful sound mixing and design. And Ben Burtt is back, so it's going to be great.

I wonder if its just me but the music seems louder in the OT movies. The sound of all the movie have been great. I expect the same with the upcoming Star Wars films.

I'd actually argue that the sound effects were the only good thing about that scene. That and This:

I've never been able to enjoy the podrace. I understand why people do, but I've never been able to get into it.

The voice work in the PT , overall, was a disappointment. Stiff, forced, and I think a lot of that had to do with environment and working on blue screen and poor direction. I'm looking forward to more natural and better direction this time around.

That plagueis at the Opera scene is a perfect example of cringeworthy "two wooden men talking to eachother like creeps" acting if I've ever seen it. Just horrendous how that got through, but that is George for ya.

I'm sorry but this thread has me slightly confused. What are we talking here? Sound effects, music? :(

I'm excited about the evolution of the music, sound effects and dialog. 30 years of change should bring a big change of difference. Engines should be different. Dialect. Attitudes. Atmosphere. Etc.

Ben Burtt will do a tremendous job, as always.

For reference to what his recent work is like, check out JJ's Star Trek.
