What do you all think of the short story by Matthew Stover that appeared in issue 130 of Star Wars Insider? When I got to the end I blinked a few times, re-read the end and beginning paragraphs again, and a big grim appeared on my face. Are all Sthorst stories this high in standard? I don't normally by Insider, and was wondering if it would be worth subscribing for these short stories. Is there a list of upcoming stories and brief description of what they contain anywhere?
Amazing, isn't it? We discussed in in more detail in Darth Plaguies thread and Insider Short Stories thread. Oh, yes. For me personally, Matthew Woordring Stover is the God of SWEU. All of works are awesome and I wouldn't be here if not for him. It's and old practice they renewed this year: mostly as tie-in t upcoming books: Insider 124 (March 2011) - The Third Lesson by Paul S. Kemp, tie-in to his novel The Old Republic: Deceived Insider 125 (April 2011) - First Blood by Christie Golden, tie-in to her novel Fate of the Jedi: Ascension Insider 126 (May 2011) - Buyer's Market by Timothy Zahn, tie-in to his novel Choices of One Insider 128 (August 2011) - And Leebo Makes Three by Michael Reaves and Maya Kaathryn Bohnhoff, tie-in to their novel Shadow Games Insider 129 (October 2011) - A Fair Trade by Paul S. Kemp, tie-in to his novel Riptide Star Wars Insider Special Edition 2012 (November 2011) - Vader Adrift by Ryder Windham, tie-in to his book The Complete Vader Insider 130 (December 2011) - Tenebrous Way by Matthew Stover, tie-in to novel Darth Plagueis by James Luceno Upcoming are a story by Jeff Grubb tying into his novel Scourge and another one by Jason Fry tying into the Essential Guide to Warfare.
You know, these short stories are almost enough to make me want to subscribe to Insider... problem is, they're the only thing I have any real interest in
You can buy back issues from the publisher of the magazine. Just go to their website - they charge the same price as what you would be expect to pay new in the shop when they were released. I could type out the story story and post it here for you if you gave me a couple of days, but I'm not sure about the legal side of things. If I wait a month until the mag is out of shops would it be ok? I suspect not. But like you, the only thing I will buy Insider for is the short stories. For a few pages, thats a pretty steap asking price.
well i just remembered "A Two-Edged Sword" which was in Insider 85 and it wasn't in your list... i was talking about a complete list with all the insider shorts to ever see the light of day. and while were at it a list with ALL the short stories, with stuff like "In His Image" and "Crisis of Faith".
how much is one issue? have any previous Insider stories been put in paperback novels as bonus side stories? like Darth Maul Shadow Hunter with saboteur?
well thank you for that! i've already looked for something like that on the wookie but couldn't seem to find it . thank you!
have any of these insider stories been republished in paperback novels? I imagine it would make perfect sense to include this as a bonus to Darth Plagues, paperback edition.
Yes, they definitely should've put the Tenebrous Way in the Darth Plagueis novel, keep all these short stories attached to the main stories they are tied into.
NO. Under no circumstances should this be done. They should put the short stories in with the HARDCOVERS. I pay roughly $30 per book. And then they release it again in paperback, with an exclusive short story in the back. So not only did I pay $30, but if I want the story, I need to pay another $8. They should reward the people who give them the most money: the people who actually buy the book in hardcover. The paperback should simply be an easy to way to reach the mass market.
Yeah, it'd be really nice if they actually bothered to put this with the Darth Plagueis hardcover. Unfortunately, they'll probably just stick it in the paperback, as an added incentive to try and convince people to buy the paperback. Got around to reading this, and wow, this is very, very good. Although I'm glad I read this after I read the Plagueis novel itself. Although Stover always seems to like using some of his recurring themes, but still, a very good story. Its almost enough to make me want to buy the issue, but there wasn't really anything else in Insider for me to care about, and it probably will be reprinted in the paperback and (sadly) that is enough to get my interest. Too bad it isn't available by itself somewhere, but at least its nice that Insider is publishing these short stories.
I don't have a problem with paperbacks having short stories, since they are the versions kept in print. But I agree that hardcovers should also have them, since they are that much more expensive. But where are the short story omnibuses? The Lost Tribe of the Sith is coming this summer, if they'd do that to all stories I'd buy them.
How about this, as another possible option: Each issue of Insider come with a PIN (maybe under a scratch-off or peel-off tab), which allows the reader to go online and get the short story for free as a PDF. The PIN will be one-time use (hence the scratch-off or peel-off tab, so no one just looks at the code in a random copy of Insider and downloads it, invalidating the PIN for the person who DOES buy it), and would act as a Promo Code. And also give the option to pay a dollar or two for the short story for anyone who doesn't want to buy Insider. That way, those who bought it also get a free electronic copy, and those who didn't buy Insider still have the option of having the short story.
