Look, the solution here is obvious: you get back to basics. Star Wars took inspiration from sci fi serials and Kurosawa films. We must follow that pop culture evolutionary track to its logical endpoint and have the next trilogy be about the Republic and an upstart faction waging a war for galactic supremacy, with the upstart faction using dark science to create gigantic mutant offshoots of the Zillo Beast that the Jedi must battle against using Force powered giant robots, preferably summoned by wrist watch radios.

It's not like he was a dentist and he suddenly chose to become a writer/and director**. He has been around for decades, and he is still terrible.

** though I'd argue that there really is an age at which it might become too late to become really good at something since improving requires a lot of time.

    Probably.
Actually this is a long running theory/rumour that many "filoniverse"characters would be hiding in Peridea while the events of the ST took place.
And even Ezra himself could be the one behind this "other" order..
IMHO a thing to me very clear: right now Lucasfilm is using this "filoniverse" thing to connect, at last the OT with the things showed in the ST. And make minor retcons.
Try to make the thing more cohesive
To me , instead "sith magic" they gonna retcon that Nightsisters magic was behind Palpatine "somehow return" for example.
Don't doubt the Filoni movie may even touch part of Luke's story between ROTJ and TLJ.
And i bet he'll , also somehow, connect the "missing" characters like the kids from Resistance, Jacen Syndulla and more obviously Grogu.
In the last season of Bad Batch they featured a surviving Wookie Jedi Padawan that by all means should be alive by the time of the next trilogy.
Disney is probably desesperate to bring these elments all togtether after the clear lack of planning for the ST, and to be frank no clear direction for the "next" trilogy.
But important: they clearly want a new definition of Force users, something like the mentioned Baylan and Shin Hati. People the defies the old Jedi/Sith standards.

As for the series two wildcards to watch:
    1) the corpses the Nightsisters are bringing back to the galaxy in those caskets:

Could an army of ressurected witches be an adversary to Rey New Jedi Order ?
Could there be sith lords of old ?

    2) the concept of Bokken Jedi. I don't think it was ever used before but Baylan made it look/sound so casual . I wonder if how much more people training on their own around in the galaxy, ready to pop out any minute. Never really tought there were so many that they deserved to be branded. Sounded desingenuous put that piece of information there.

But then again, i just hope they don't bring the space orcs (Yuuzhan Vong) in the game.

In terms of broad strokes, I’d say:

    1. Baylan and Hati are abandoned in the other galaxy, and go searching for whatever Baylan senses.
    2. Ahsoka doesn’t like leaving them, as they may pose a threat in the future, however leaves with Ezra and Hera to chase Thrawn back to the main galaxy.
    3. Thrawn begins to rally the Imperial Remnants against the New Republic; worlds begin to fall to Thrawn’s forces, led by his undead stormtroopers and assisted by the Great Mothers.
    4. The New Republic is finally stirred to action; Leia and Hera lead the Republic war effort with Ackbar; Ahsoka, Ezra and Luke team up; at some point the Mandalorians assist against Thrawn.
    5. Thrawn is defeated, but Mon Mothma is assassinated during the war and Ezra is killed; the New Republic is struck a blow it will not recover from.
    6. Ahsoka and Sabine part ways with Luke; the former returning the the other galaxy to find Baylan and Shin, whilst the latter sets up the Jedi in the main galaxy.

    The ST happens.

    7. Rey begins to rebuild the new Jedi Order, with the help of ghost Luke and Leia.
    8. Ahsoka and Sabine return heralding the coming of Baylan’s Order, which they were unable to stop.
    9. The threat forces the disparate planets to reform the Republic under the leadership of Poe, and Rey’s fledgling Order, including Finn and the new protagonists, assisted by Ahsoka and Sabine, move to stop the advancing enemy.
    10. Rather than stopping the cycle, Baylan has caused it to begin again, on new terms.
    11. The New Jedi Order is truly forged during the war and given purpose.
    11. Baylan’s ‘Empire’ is defeated, but his Order survives, and the Jedi are too few to destroy them.

A new status quo is established - the Jedi protect the Republic, whilst Baylan’s Order assists various petty kingdoms on its outskirts.

I know you guys want this to be somehow interesting and different. But the truth is that probably about five years from now, we will learn that as Emperor Palpatine grew grey and bloated, it wasn't from the corruption of the Dark Side. He was transforming his body into a space whale the whole time--the same one that put the events of this series in motion. Only Ashoka will be able to bring balance to the Force by defeating him.

Wocky you really need to spend time offline. Because you've gone from having sensible skepticism about the writing to kicking over people's sandcastles. And its not just you, it's a lot of people here like this. Go offline. Talk about a topic to a real person in front of you. Instead of constantly trying to poo poo people who are participating in star wars discussions in good faith.

    Just stop.

Ahsoka keeps going back and forth on the space whales, always just missing the bad guys by five minutes

I wouldn't mind this in a general outline actually. Now I usually a 100% rooting for the good guys person, but I must say that I find Bayland and Shin to be the most interesting characters in Ahsoka, and yes the latest episode was much more interesting than the space/time jump/fanservice one. It's really sad that we won't see more of Ray Stevensson in the SW galaxy. :(

A show like One Piece is excellent at showing how Star Wars shows have become stale in comparison. Yesterday's news.

@DarthPhilosopher Not a bad summary. Unfortunately, with the loss of Ray Stevenson instead of the Baylan's Order, maybe we'll get the Shin Dynasty?

Shin is just as interesting as the characters of the sequel trilogy (which is none) so at the very least the tone will match.

People are focusing on plot mechanics but that's not the most important thing. Camaraderie, people who are truly heroic, baddies you love to hate. Alien worlds and alien aliens. Great, outlandish designs. A dramatic score. Some humor. And just a pinch of mysticism. These are the elements that made Star Wars good.

Focusing on plot mechanics is exactly what gives us dire shows like this, with people staring off into the distance and talking.

The villains are good though, which is something Star Wars has always excelled at.

I do agree a back to basics strategy is sensible (that's why Mandalorian season 1 worked so well), but so having a plan of what you want to do and where you want to go.
The more stuff gets cancelled or put on hold the more it's obvious nothing is planned out long-term.

It's weird because Filoni's cartoons (yes, with the walk cycles) aren't like that. Ezra and Sabine's reunion, for example, was extremely subdued as though their blood is nothing but Xanax.

Filoni is starting to get to grips with how you write live action Star Wars.

But he needs to be even more minimalist, why do a whole show about Thrawn's return when he could have just written "Somehow, Thrawn returned"?

Filoni: Understands the mythology, but should not be allowed within 20 feet of a script.

    He learned from Lucas.
Or at least, he didn't learn that he should defer such things to other people who are better.

He didn't write the script for every episode of TCW & Rebels did he?
Plenty of good lines in those shows, plenty of well written scenes.

Can't be that hard to hire good screenwriters, Disney has the money
