Saga Things You Can't Unsee From the Films

Mistakes or otherwise, what are the small details that can never go unnoticed after you've spotted them?

One that's been ruined for me is Ewan's wig in The Phantom Menace

Since this has been brought up, it's been very obvious when we're looking at a pickup shot. Which is a shame; Ewan has great hair.

 

I don't have any problem with the Jabba scene being in A New Hope but the way Han awkwardly steps over his tail bothers me soooo much.

 

Anakin rewinding in his confession scene to Padme.

 

Ewan's wigs and fake beards, plus the fact that he'd obviously gained weight before shooting pickups for TPM.

Yeah, and the hair in the pickups is a distinct shade of red, not just brown (maybe not even a wig).

From reading the 'Making of' book of TPM years ago, there was something very Ed Wood about that production at times - just slap some bluescreen panels a bit higher to cover that background cityscape, let's move on, no one will notice that thing, don't worry about that, we'll fix it all with CGI - come on people, we're getting an average of 36 setups done a day! Other films are lucky to get 5!

I worked in post-production for 15 years, and if there's one thing that'll give you ulcers, heart attacks and strokes, it's the attitude of the 'field' that it can all be fixed later.



With Ewan's hair, I can just picture someone saying, "Don't worry, colour grading, CGI, new technology, blah, blah, blah, fix it later..."

You can, of course, fix such things these days - if you've got months of time and tens of millions of dollars for such little bits and pieces that could otherwise be sorted within a few minutes and a bit of attention on set, for next to no cost.

The randomly switching lightsabers during the Anakin vs Obi-Wan fight... and Boba Fett's flipped shot in Jabba's palace, where his little antenna thing is on the wrong side... unimportant I know, but these things bother me...

Also, not really an error, but Lando's "hey look, it's me, Lando" helmet tweak in Jabba's palace really takes me out of the moment every time!

 

Don't know how you'd categorise this, and don't have a scan, but there's this awful shot in ROTJ when Han tells Threepio to take care of things at the bunker, and Leia gives this "you piece of @#$%, I don't want to be here" look at Threepio, which I'm guessing was just a bad take - but it really takes you out of the film. Anyone who's seen the film multiple times would know what I'm talking about.

Han's being cranky in character, Leia's got no reason for this filthy look. Very wrong.

 

I'll see the Ewan's TPM wig/puffier reshoot face and raise you his reshoot wig from AOTC which ALWAYS bugs me because not only does the wig look like a horse slept on it, but the beard looks glued on.

The majority of Special Edition changes for the OT.

The editing screwups in ANH (Death Star chasm firefight, second X-Wing trench run) that the Special Edition chose to ignore.

 

• The 1970's hair in ANH and the old looking computers in the background. Along with Tarkin referring to "data tapes".
• Luke's "Noooooo!" in ESB makes me cringe. Probably the only part of ESB I don't like. The rest of it is a masterpiece.
• Jabba's palace looks like an episode of the Muppets.
• The badly choreographed fight scene on Jabba's barge.
• Jake Lloyd's acting takes me out of the movie (TPM) even more than Jar Jar.
• "Are you an angel?" *gag*
• The pod race would have been 10x better without the two headed announcer guy. He ruins that scene a bit.
• The love dialogue in AOTC. *barf*
• Anakin riding a terribly CGI'd hippo on Naboo.
• "If you're not with me" line in ROTS - blatant political stab at Bush. Takes me out of the movie.
• The Starkiller Base destruction planning scene. Ugh.

Can you please tell me where Tarkin ever referred to "tapes" in ANH?

It's correct that earlier screenplay drafts referred to "tapes", but fortunately Lucas was wise enough to have that changed to "data" and "plans".

Did he miss one I'm not aware of?

Great, each time I try to forget Dex with all my stength, his name pops up somewhere.

 

The NOOOOOOOO scene in ROTS and the added NOOOOOO scenes in the SE.

The ROTS scene with Vader saying that made me laugh out loud in theaters....it was beyond cringe worthy. Just awful..

 

Why the **** isn't General Hux wearing sunglasses when he stares up at the column of pure unadulterated solar energy streaming down into Starkiller Base' capacitors?

 

A couple editing errors, mostly Obi-Wan disappearing upon a wide shot of Anakin vs. Dooku in AOTC, and Obi-Wan falling over the edge of the platform on Utapau being slightly mistimed. Also C-3PO's position totally changing in the frame jump when Luke first activates the lightsaber

 

The ROTJ NOOOOOOOO! can't be unheard. It's almost ruined the silent version of the scene for me.

 

The TFA Stormtrooper helmets look like the Mighty Ducks logo.

Padme's foot slip as she confronts Gunray in the throne room. TIE Fighters appearing out of literally nowhere during the Endor battle in the ROTJ special edition.

 

Yes! Thank you! It's horrible, and yet I never see it called out, even amongst the most ardent ROTJ critics.

And if I might add, the horrible effect of Artoo & Threepio being pulled out of the "sand". A "special effect" right out of a Junior High stage production.

I wasn't trying to be nitpicky, I just wondered if anybody had really said data "tapes" and your script quote confirms that. I will need to rewatch the scene but my memory tells me that you are probably and unfortunately right.
