Greetings, I am planning on doing a Grand Admiral Thrawn and I was wondering what the best type of makeup is? You know, something that won't run or crack, and can be washed off easily. Also, I know most blue makeup is really BLUE so I would need something that can be diluted into a faded blue and not turn a different color. Thanks
It's good to see another person interested in a Grand Admiral Thrawn costume. Ben Nye cream-based makup has always worked well for my Thrawn costume. I start with blue as a base coat and then blend in a small ammount of white to dull the blue and add highlights or emphasize shadows. It's always a work in progress, but here is a picture from last year's Comic Con in San Diego to see the effect I've been able to get. Hope this helps, good luck.
I remember seeing you at Comic-Con last year, Idiots Array. Your make-up, along with the rest of your costume, was awesome.
well, is this for a convention, or a fan film, or something different...certain types of make look better in real life, some better on camera, etc...
Ben Nye is probably best, but you should keep in mind which kind you want. There is the oil based and aqua based. Oil is much like grease paint that clowns wear. It gives great coverage and better mixing but it must be powdered and can smear rather badly. Aqua is easier and faster to apply and is easier on the skin. I think both stand up to sweat pretty well. Just thought that might be helpful.
I prefer the water-based, simply because it's easier to remove. Only down side is that it can sweat off as well. Krylon is spiffy. How are you planning to get the glowing red eyes?
One way to do the eyes is to get full scleral red contacts (covering the whole visible part of the eye). IA and I have actually talked about him doing that, but just the thought of wearing a lens that large makes *my* eyes water... and I wouldn't be the one wearing them! Still, it would definitely give the right effect. For now, IA has red-iris contacts, which actually look pretty darn cool...
Unlocking and bumping. Also, just to throw my two cents in, I prefer the water activated Ben Nye cake makeup, primarily because it is less likely to irritate sensitive skin. Also, I have had better luck with it lasting through a long day than the oil base. It does take some practice to develop a deft hand at even coverage with it, but the learning curve is not particularly steep. Once it's dry, it's also very easy to add shadows and hilights with a regular makeup brush.
I'm not sure if you've already purchased a body makeup or not, but if I may, I would suggest the stuff I am using for my Aayla costume. The name of it is Global Colours Body Art. It's bodypaint/bodymakeup which is good for airbrushing as well. To see for yourself, you can go to my Aayla Tutorial and see how it came on my skin: AaylaTutorial And the website to purchase them is: AirbrushBodyArt I hope that helps some. -Tanya
Hey guys! I got a response for a similar thread I posted in the Fan Films forum. Check out a company called "Reel Creations." They produced the make-up used for Darth Maul and for a lot of stuntmen in "Waterworld." Peace!
Thanks, Jade-Walker. kreleia and I will be making some minor modifications to the uniform over the next few weeks to get everything ready for San Diego Comic Con this year. I'm looking forward to it.
