Okay this is something I just thought of after the 50th viewing of A New Hope. At the ending ceremony in what is called The Throne Room scene. Why is it called a throne room if there aren't any thrones in it? Now I know it's was temple renovated into a rebel base but not even the cross section books don't have info about thrones in the temple. Anyone have the anwsers I seek?
Well, you see, the aliens who built the throne room had extremely wide butts, so what the Rebels used as a stage was actually a throne for one extra wide alien sovereign. I like big butts and I cannot lie.
So you criticized me for making the silly trolling Bothan thread... and yet.,. you are doing the same thing? (at least be original...)
Strictly speaking, a throne is not necessarily a chair upon which a monarch sits It can be used to refer to sovereign power alone. Thus the "throne room" in such a case would refer to the main public/professional chambers of one who holds this power Let's assume that thousands of years ago, that was where the leader of the Massassi people or whatever it may be in new canon hangs out or holds meetings or something. It's thereby the room of the throne/holder of power or, to condense to a reduced genitive case, the throne room
It was the room where the Kings, Queens, Dukes & royalty held their ceremonies and handed medals to the honoured guests as we saw. In ROTJ Palpatine had his own thrown room but with Imperial Guards on standby and very much a closed chamber with a view of the space battle unfolding.
Maybe I can shed some light on the issue. According to early Ralph McQuarrie sketches (in The Art of Star Wars), the "Throne Room" was originally a circular room (matching the circular shape of the Great Temple on Yavin IV, prior to its demolition by the Special Edition), apparently on top of the Great Temple with a raised pedestal in the center, probably the throne of the mysterious race that vanished eons ago. During the ongoing production of "Star Wars" and amidst increasing budget problems the "Throne Room" ultimately became the "Great Hall" (covering the same stage as the Great Temple's hangar), as evidenced by the storyboard below ("Disney" standing for Harrison Ellenshaw and his matte painting, as Ellenshaw was actually still working for Disney, then). In the music sheets the scene was still identified as "Throne Room", but IMHO the correct designation is the "Great Hall".
I just figured that at one point in Yavin's history, that was the throne room for whatever monarchy used to rule there. When the Rebels came, they must've guessed this room was a throne room of sorts but didn't really bother themselves with doing the actual scholarly research on exactly what this place was.
I don't think the name of the room is meant to be taken literally The idea was probably that the "throne" room was an executive board room of sorts, where top secret meetings were held.
I got to admit it is probably my favorite piece of music in ANH. John Williams' work for that film is underrated, I think. We all love his work for TESB, but what he did for ANH was a fantastic start for Star Wars in general.
Piggybacking on this for a second... who's assuming that the Massassi "people" were bipeds that would've required a "throne" as defined by humanoid species.... ???
Seagoat wrote In current canon.... huh. Damn Can you elaborate? I think that already the exterior of the Great Temple speaks for itself: Why aren't the stair pylons (supporting the gargantuan blocks) made or cut the same way as the giant blocks between? IMHO, this looks like some enslaved species had to erect all the stair pylons using rather traditional, crude building techniques while the "master race" somehow manufactured and put the gargantuan blocks on the stair pylon foundations.
