When i try and play my copy of tie fighter my computer won't run it. It says I need to download dirictX 5. But I have DirictX 8. Has anyone else had this problem? Oh and i have Windows XP if that helps.

Can you still download the old versions of DirectX?

There are a few things you can try, though it depends on your version of Tie Fighter.

See this ezboard thread for some discussion.

Star Wars: TIE Fighter (Windows 95/98 version)

NOTE: Not supported for use with the Windows XP Operating System.

We have determined through customer input along with LEC testing that the game experiences various incompatibilities which cannot be resolved by means of standard troubleshooting.

I got it to work in XP, but without 3D accelerated graphics.

I've got both Tie Fighter, Xwing and Xwing Alliance on XP but can't get sound on XW and TF. Someone suggested I use VDMsound.

Hm... has anyone tried making a boot disk and just running them from DOS?

I used to use that technique a while ago with Dark Forces, X-Wing and TIE Fighter.

This is something many have tripped up on in the past. My way of getting around it (I think this has been mentioned before) is to partition the hard drive and load multiple Operating systems (in this case, Xp and 95). It saves a lot of hassle. If you get the chance, I suggest you do that.

Mine had the joystick problem too, but I saw the QfixApp on some other site, did all the stuff, and now it works fine. Only without the 3D graphics enhancement.

Wasn't there a compatibility fix file to download that allowed use of 3D graphics with these newer versions?

I really want to play TIE Fighter again, thanks to ROTS, but I'm not sure if it'll work on Win XP. Does anyone have this version of the game (linked)? Does it work in WinXP with 3d graphics? Does it have CD audio music? Are the ancient graphics still tolerable? :p

That version is improved graphically, as it runs on the X-Wing vs TIE Fighter engine. You can get it running in XP, but a compatability fix is needed to make the 3D graphics work. It does have CD audio, but it doesn't change with the situation like it did in the original CD version.

as for DOS versions of TIE Fighter in XP, I've not heard of any way to get it to run. but for the later windows 95 version of TIE Fighter, X-wing and X-wing vs TIE Fighter and for windows 98, X-wing Alliance...

Go into the game folder and find the ".exe" file. For win95 version of TIE Fighter this file actually looks like a TIE Fighter. Right click on it and go to properties, click on it and in the menu that pops up click on "compatibility". On that page it has compatibility mode and asks which one you would like to be played in. For TIE and such select windows 95 and it'll work fine. Just dont turn on the accelerated graphics in game. It'll even detect USB flight sticks.

It doesn't have interactive music anymore??? Dang, that really sucks!! Man, it seems like TIE Fighter can't be enjoyed in its complete original form without reverting to some DOS computer..

It's a piece of cake to get the DOS TIE Fighters working in XP. I play the Collector's CD all the time, with interactive music :) A program called VDMSound is your friend. There is an enormous thread on it somewhere here.

Alliance does work OK, but sometimes the text gets screwed up if you have certain antialiasing options set for you graphics card.

There's no way known at this forum to get 640x480 working. I've been waiting for one for years.

Ok, now the question is with my joystick. I bought a Logitech Attack 3 joystick and it works fine but I want to use Logitechs Profiler to match joystick buttons with keystrokes in tie fighter but it only lets me select the Tie.exe directly, i cant select the VDMs shortcut to use the sound. Any way around this?
