Well, too bad, we can't have the funniest app with the best algorithm anymore because money. Even though I spent the last year and a half cultivating a small following and my last several videos have gotten thousands of views apiece and I was finally starting to become kind of okay at the whole content creation thing. So, where's everyone going now? And don't lie, you use it, it's the best ****ing app. Apps I've heard: Lemon8 (owned by ByteSource, TikTok's parent company so who the hell knows) Neptune BlueSky Instagram Twitter YouTube What else is there
I don’t use it. I don’t use any social media apps. It’s a disease. So I’m not going anywhere. I’ll be right here. In the world, and on the JCF.
I don’t have a moral objection to Tik Tok, but have never used it/been inclined to join… Twitter, Reddit, Facebook & Instagram are enough.
I have a TikTok account in order to follow like three kpop groups who sometimes post dances there. People from other countries will continue to share these on Twitter and BlueSky, both of which I use. So I won't miss very much. However, I find the ban to be xenophobic and dubious in its legality. Instead what we should have is an overall data privacy law applying to ALL apps, like the EU and California have. Chinese apps are far from the only bad actors there.
Some younger coworkers convinced me to get it years ago, it can be a lot of fun. For my favorite people, I found them on Instagram and/or YouTube. I'll see how it goes. But I think there's a chance it will be reversed, especially if the tech titans have made Trump more anti-censorship (in their definition), although it's a longshot. The US government feeling like they don't have enough supervision of TikTok is actually a point for TikTok, in my opinion.
I don't use TikTok or "Meta" platforms. It was bad enough getting into Twitter when I was stuck at home in 2020, and I post here too much. This ban will surely stop The Youths from being more pro-Palestine and anti-capitalist (actual concerns voiced by actual politicians who voted for it). I am way more afraid of some nebulous threat by a government on the other side of the world having my data than I am of domestic Nazi billionaires hoarding information and using their platforms to shove right-wing propaganda down everyone's throats. Judging by Meta's lobbying in favor of the ban, Zuck clearly believes that people will flock to his dog**** apps infested by official "AI" slop and now with the moderation policy of a white South African. I'm not so sure.
So I am known to partake in TikTok on occasion. I’ll just get my scrolling from YouTube shorts. I’ve tried it before basically the same thing although more movie edits than on TikTok. I don’t actually really care about TikTok getting banned outside of a more general “I don’t think the government should be banning apps because they don’t like the Chinese government. I think social media is more of a bad thing than it is good at this point. And if Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and TikTok all went the way of Vine I think the world would be better off.
I have a TikTok account, I don’t use it much, and my favorite feeds are also on IG and YouTube. I’m sad for people who do use it almost exclusively though, especially younger people. And banning it is stupid. bUt tHeY mIgHt uSe yOuR dAtA fOr nEfArIoUs pUrPoSeS. —Cool. When is Congress going to ban Meta? I’m much less concerned about somebody in Beijing knowing that I like to watch left-wing talking heads and cats doing cat things, especially now that Zuck has his head up Trump’s ass.
I feel bad more for the thousands of people who have to migrate to YouTube or IG because their livelihood counts on it. A majority of people who do TikTok as a living aren’t making millions of dollars. And many of these people won’t be able to make the switch. Not to mention I assume the by taking out the American market much of the UK, Australian, Canadian etc will dry up
Are they actually going to ban TikTok? How would that even work? They've been talking about it for years, but I always figured it was just bluster. Not sure how you enforce such a ban. Anyway, I've been meaning to check out TikTok since forever. It looks like I may have waited just a little too late.
TikTok has already said if the Supreme Court rules in favor they are going to shut down the American servers and will comply. They aren’t fighting this. Beyond the courts. plus even if they were there are ways to do it. Basically block apple and Google from letting the store on American phones. Not letting updates and the app itself will break within time.
TikTok won't be allowed to host servers on US soil, and ISPs won't be allowed to connect to it. Theoretically people can use VPNs to circumvent that, though.
I never downloaded Tik Tok because I was already using this phone too much when it came along. I know I should put it down more, so by not adding another addictive app at least I'm not giving myself another reason to use my phone. I gave up Facebook before I ever got Instagram. It was Twitter, this site and YouTube. Now it's Bluesky, this site and YouTube I spend all my time on.
The ban was passed already and signed into law laat year. It goes into effect this week unless they win their Supreme Court appeal that was heard last week.
Which most people are saying unlikely. also Apple Store and google play store aren’t fooled by VPN. They’ll know you bought the phone in America and know not to let TikTok be updated so eventually the app just breaks plus I don’t think k people understand that Americans who make money from TikTok will not upload to it anymore thus limiting the more popular content.
I have barely looked at TikTok in a couple of years, apart from stuff I've seen shared on other social media. So no loss IMO, most stuff on social media is total brain rot anyway. Endless videos of cats doing random stuff, an Asian guy saying "Oreo" a lot or people doing the same silly dances and miming to whatever is the latest trend can be funny a few times but it's not exactly essential or enlightening content. YouTube has the same stuff but also long format content on all sorts of interesting subjects
Yea if I had to wager most American TikTok users are gonna go to YouTube. As much as Zuckerberg wants them. YouTube pays better to its long form creators and short form creators than TikTok does.the content creators are almost certainly gonna go to YouTube to get paid better.
