Star Wars has traditionally not picked up where it left off when transitioning from one film to the next--except RoTJ that takes place a few weeks or so after the events of ESB. How many months or years do you think has gone by since the events of VII when VIII starts off?

I mean let's think about it for a second. The Republic and the First Order are both crippled. Their armies have taken a huge hit with the destruction of the former's capital and the latter's Starkiller Base. The Resistance, though victorious, had heavy casualties during the attack on Starkiller Base. Kylo Ren is badly wounded from his duel with Rey who just started training with Luke by the end of the first movie. It would make logical sense for both sides to regroup, recover, and prepare for an all-out war with one another.

I was quite surprised about how much stuff is still there to show in the next movie. So much back story that needs to be uncovered. So much questions to be answered.

It was about a year that transpired between ESB and ROTJ.

I am going with a minimum of 2 years between 7 and 8. 5 years maximum.

I think it'll be nine months to a year.

A couple of months. Rey's been training with Luke while Kylo's been completing his training with Snoke.

Hasn't part of VIII been filmed on Skellig already? Which suggests that we can jump no more than a couple of months. Unless we get a '4 years later....' style jump in a SW movie which I don't see.

I'm guessing 6 months to a year. MAYBE two years, but I kind of doubt it right now.

I'm sorry but I want to know what Luke says to Rey as soon as he turns around.

It may be longer than we expect, here's why I think we need a gap:

-The Republic needs time to regroup and rearm after the Pearl Harboring of the fleet and Senate. Without some time to rebuild, there won't be much of a "war" for Star Wars to show.
    - To avoid recapitulating the elements of ESB (barely trained Jedi, hasty training) I believe Rey will be shown at an advanced stage of training in Episode VIII.

They have to continue where they left off, we need to see Luke's reaction to Rey handing him the lightsaber beyond the blank stare...

That is troublesome if there's a big gap, yes. But I'm not totally convinced they can't just let us fill in the gaps there.

I don't think much of any filming has gone on for Ep. VIII as an article came out just a couple days ago stating Ridley has only read the script for the movie.

I think a little bit of time will pass as the characters need to be in different stages than they were in Ep. VII. If they were basically acting the same way they did in the previous episode it would be Ep. VII part 2 more than it would be Ep. VIII. So I'm thinking at the minimum a year will pass.

The crawl could fill in some of that, I suppose.

Actually, you could kind of cheat and just have Luke train Rey without giving her any info at all about where he has been, who she is, etc. Which frustrates her and brings out the dark side in her, etc.

Time gap or not. Do you guys think Finn will still be in a coma when the story picks up again?

They've already shot some of it at Skellig, so I'd imagine it's very soon after TFA. 6 months to a year sounds about right. It could also start immediately after.

I think probably not. But they might delve into any lingering trauma/effects that his injuries have had on him.

I'm hoping for 8-10 years. Enough time for the First Order to grow or evolve/merge/whatever with another large faction, for the Republic to have lost a bunch of systems and support to the other superpower, for Kylo Ren to become formidable and have control of his emotions, for Rey to have a good chunk of training under her belt, for Rey's line to Finn about seeing him again one day to be meaningful, enough time so Leia isn't dwelling about dead-Han, enough time for Finn to move up the ranks so that he's now Phasma's opposite in a way, for Disney XD to have room for another animated series, enough time for the development of new ships, weapons and the recruitment/training of soldiers, for building another superweapon.

If that were to happen they would have to recast the main characters. The actors aren't much older than the characters they play. But then again on second thought I guess they didn't recast Padme. I have a tendency of blocking Padme out of my memory.

I'm pretty much okay with anyone playing their 10 years younger or older selves. It especially won't hurt Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill. I'm in my late 30s and will never lose my hair, but if I shave and try to buy cigarettes and not wear my big boy clothes, I will almost always get carded. My father's in his mid 80s and everyone thinks he's in his 50s or early 60s.

Honestly, the way this one ended it feels like this is the first Star Wars movie will pick up, like, that second.

Actually it was 7 yrs between those two movies and has been about 7 yrs between each film in each trilogy except for the time between a new hope and esb if I'm not mistaken.

Um... no. It's three years between ANH and ESB, one year between ESB and ROTJ, ten years between TPM and AOTC and three years between AOTC and ROTS.

I think we'll pick up fairly shortly after TFA. A few months to a year.

Crap my bad. You are correct. I just looked at one of my non cannon books and for some reason I had thought it was 7 yrs.
