This is a fact. Film music has seen some great days through the years. Max Steiner, Alfred Newman, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Alan Menken, Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman.

But James Horner's score for Titanic I think is the lead contender. I'm not saying it's a clear-cut, no-contest clear win. There's plenty of amazing scores out there. But this is the one I would pick for all-time greatest.

Like many films, the music, I think, accounts for just about half of the films success. I don't think all those teenage girls would have been half as lovestruck and gone to see the film seven times (like my own sister did) if it weren't for the music that accentuated everything.

That's all. I just wanted to point out this fact.

So, Mr. Horner: WTH happened with Avatar?

    Slimy!

You pointed out your opinion, not a fact.

Celine Dion did the music for Titanic, dude. It was only the biggest hit film music since Boyz II Men's work on Boomerang.

    Eww.

    Seriously?

    Eew.

Maybe, just maybe if it had been a normal length film it might have been as there is some of Horner's best work in that film but as a whole there was so much time to fill and parts just don't stand up to the rest of the whole (eg. the long sections of time where Jack and Roseare trapped and trying to get to the deck after the impact while the ship is taking on water).

And it wasn't the music that kept the teenage girls going again and again, it was the fact that bootlegging was less common than now and the girls kept going to see Leo and imagine that they were Rose.

I like James Horner's music for Titanic. I also like his score for Apollo 13. But I still think his scores aren't as diverse as that of Hans Zimmer (compare Crimson Tide to The Dark Knight and then to Sherlock Holmes)

IMO Star Wars, Conan the Barbarian, Excalibur, Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark have the best film music.

John Williams is pretty hard to beat. Everybody can wistle the theme to Star Wars, Jaws, E.T or Indiana Jones and anybody would recognize it. Just about anybody.

    Serious question here guys...
Why does Celine Dion have a ginormous cameltoe 24/7?

Love John Williams (even though they DID use his music from AOTC in the Harry Potter film) but the Crow SCORE by Graeme Revell is just so lovely and haunting...

And with Wrath of Khan, though the music is so similar in both flicks it's easy to confuse them.

And to be honest, I prefer his work on Braveheart than the sappy crap he did for frakkin' Titanic (yes, I hate this overrated turd of a film, sorry).

But in the end, Zimmer pwns Horner.

I don't think I've ever heard the word "diverse" used to describe Zimmer

I love Titanic's score, but I don't watch nearly enough movies to declare it (or any other) as "best ever".

True... additionally, I'd have to say that I don't consider too many other composers to be diverse, either. Most have some sort of tick that makes them identifiable within even the first track of a score. That being said, I merely prefer Zimmer's work to Horner's overall, but I'm actually fond of Braveheart more so than Titanic.
