Tom & Jerry = The Greatest Cartoon Duo Ever?

So, I'm currently watching old Tom & Jerry cartoons on Cartoon Network, and I must say, it's absolutely hilarious as well as being horrifically violent.

Just in the last five minutes, Tom blew himself up with a keg of gunpowder, got shot in the face with a roman candle, and assorted other things that my faulty memory is having trouble recalling.

 

As a duo, I'd say yes. I loved watching the old Tom and Jerry's as a kid - before editing them to make them more PC.

I've watched the same episodes on youtube and TV, and didn't notice any differences. Of course, it's possible that the ones on youtube were from a TV broadcast.

 

On Baby Mama, Tina Fey's character says Tom & Jerry hate each other but Amy Poehler's character says they love each other...who is right?

 

Yes. I even got into an argument once because a friend of mine didn't really know Tom&Jerry. Preposterous!
I even have a DVD, but never really watch it

 

It's both.

In some episodes they're bitter enemies, and in others they're almost friends. In some it's kind of an uneasy alliance or truce.

You are correct.

 

It's not both. They're natural enemies. Sometimes they both have a greater enemy and so they do what they need to to survive. At no point are they friends, it's just the old saying 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend'.

In 1975, Tom and Jerry were reunited with Hanna and Barbera, who produced new Tom and Jerry cartoons for Saturday mornings. These 48 seven-minute short cartoons were paired with The Great Grape Ape and Mumbly cartoons, to create The New Tom and Jerry/Grape Ape Show, The Tom and Jerry/Grape Ape/Mumbly Show, and The Tom and Jerry/Mumbly Show, all of which ran on ABC Saturday Morning from September 6, 1975 to September 3, 1977. In these cartoons, Tom and Jerry (now with a red bow tie), who had been enemies during their formative years, became nonviolent pals who went on adventures together, as Hanna-Barbera had to meet the stringent rules against violence for children's TV. The Tom and Jerry Show is still airing on the Canadian channel, TELETOON, and its classical counterpart, TELETOON Retro.

As you can imagine, they stunk like garbage.
