Top Boy is a U.K. crime drama, set in East London (my neck of the woods). It’s a gritty and realistic story about two drug dealers making their way up from low/mid level “shotters” to “Top Boys”. Most of the prominent roles are played by some of the best rappers in the UK’s Grime music scene. You wouldn’t know this isn’t their day job - these people can act. Sully (played by Kane Robinson (Kano)) is the muscle, and as the season progresses has various falling outs with business partner Dushane (Ashley Waters). Dushane is a ruthless mofo, but Sully wrestles mentally with things they have to do along the way, and aspects of his own upbringing. Although it’s a hard watch most of the time, Kane Robinson plays him so well, you are at times sympathetic to his character. He really is a product of his environment, and for my money Kano can give some of the best nonverbal acting performances you’ll ever see on a TV screen. The pain etched on his face is palpable. Top Boy Season 3 just dropped on Netflix. It’s the final season. Technically it’s Season 5 - the first two seasons were made by Channel 4. C4 then dropped the show, but Drake the Rapper pitched it to Netflix, who then picked the show back up. He’s not in the show, he’s an exec producer. https://www.capitalxtra.com/news/does-drake-direct-top-boy-netflix-new-season/ If it streams in your area, and you haven’t seen it yet, the order in which to watch is: Top Boy: Summerhouse 1 Top Boy: Summerhouse 2 Top Boy Season 1 Top Boy Season 2 Top Boy Season 3 Where’s the food, fam? Sully meets Season 3 Big Bad Johnny McGee (Barry Keoghan)
Cool, you won’t be disappointed. It’s Gomorrah-level gritty. Here’s a slang list I found online to help you transition.. It's a good show. I like that they don't try to glamorize the mob life, and they show their misery for what it is.
Dushane definitely likes some of the finer things in life, but Sully lives a very nomadic hand-to-mouth existence
That’s the final season. If you watch Season 1 (Top Boy: Summerhouse) you’ll find half the MCU. Benedict Wong, A very young Letitia Wright
Wagwan. Just burnt through S3 in one all-night sitting. Brilliant ending. They pulled out all the stops. S1 is still my favourite but S3 runs it close. Right, off to score some food from my supplier (by a loaf of bread from Sainsburys). Luv.
I have just finished season 2. This show is pretty cool. Spoiler: season 2 It kind of ends with a cliffhanger with the Albanians, but then my understanding is that the show was cancelled until a rapper offered to produce it 6 years later, so there will be a 6 years time jump between 2 and 3.
I didn’t think another show could compare or be better than The Wire. Thanks to Drake for reviving the series.
