We had a thread started last year when Tori released Strange Little Girls, but it died ages ago and I thought I would start a new one, especially now that we know she's back in the studio recording a new album. [More news on that can be found at The Dent.
She has also mentioned that she will be touring later in the year to support that album. [It's been mentioned she will tour with the band, not solo like this past tour. But who knows.]

I did get the chance to see her for the first time in concert on 10/6/01 in Washington, D.C. and it was nothing short of amazing. I can't wait to have the opportunity to see her again [and more than once this tour.]

So, what is your favorite Tori album? era? song? Discuss!

..and here's a link to the old, dead thread

Tori's great, the first time I heard the lyric "give me life, give me pain, give me myself agin," I all but burst into tears. I was so moved. I hear she gives great shows. One day I hope to see one of them in person.

I've seen her performing twice -- I believe it was in '96 or '97. These days are all a haze to me. I believe the first was Paradiso, Amsterdam; and the second Pinkpop. (No, it was the other way around).

It was quite powerful. It was good. Strangely enough, it reminded me of Bob Dylan: you just had to watch and listen to the little white figure on that enormous blue-lit stage.

Has she got a song with a really good, strong bassline?

Great parallel to Dylan, Debo! Now him, I have seen! Oh, and what a show. It was just after the september 11th attacks and all of his archaic words still rang so true... as if they hadn't aged a bit!

Did I say baseline? I meant bassline.

You'd probably like her album From the Choirgirl Hotel then. My favorites from that album are Spark, Cruel, Black Dove, Raspberry Swirl, and Iieee.

Tori's earlier work is mainly solo, esp. from 1992-1994..in 1998 and 1999 she toured with a band. Her 1999 album, To Venus and Back (a 2-CD set, one studio, one live) is really good too.

Saerah, I'm so glad you revived this thread! :D

I got to see her during her Plugged tour of 98 in Norman, Ok. Me and my friends were 3rd roll center on the floor and I was just simply amazed and blown away. When she sang 'Northern lad' that night, which that songs strikes a nerve in me anyway, I was crying and I know she saw me and watched me the whole time she sang it. (Granted I'm sure there were others there who had that exact thought.)

I was upset cause the closest she came to me was Dallas and I knew there was no way I would make that show.

Lets music wise, my favorites are 'Boys for Pele' and 'From the Choir Girl Hotel'. I tried to get into 'To Venus and Back' and couldn't. Though I did like live disc.

Some of my favorite songs are Spark, Taula,Hey Jupiter (dakota version). She's your cocaine,Crucify, Precious things, In the spring time of his voodoo,Cornflake girl, frog on my toe and caught a lite sneeze...EEP! Almost forgot Raspberry Swirl.

And this is just me, but I somewhat recent discovered Merman, Beluah Land, Cooling, Mary, and the Etienne trilogy (from her Y Can't Tori Read days). The link on my sig mixes 2 of my fave. things the witchblade show and this Tori lyric. :) So if you wanna see it you'll have to cut and paste the link in cause its geocities. Its not much just a little banner.

Heres a little question for the thread, anyone have a lyric of hers that holds a special place in your heart?

For me its the line from Hey Jupiter (dakota version)

"I go from day to day
I know where the cupboards are
I know where the car is parked
    I know he isn't you."

    Hey Calli! :D

And this is just me, but I somewhat recent discovered Merman, Beulah Land, Cooling, Mary, and the Etienne trilogy (from her Y Can't Tori Read days).

I just discovered Etienne during this year as well because I had never really listened to anything on YKTR. One of my fave live versions of Etienne, though, is from 1996--her April 28th show in D.C. One of my favorite B-Sides is Never Seen Blue--I think I have an mp3 or recording of every live version she has done, lol.

Heres a little question for the thread, anyone have a lyric of hers that holds a special place in your heart?

Oh, wow, this is a hard question. Right now, Here in my Head and Cool On Your Island (SLT version) really gets to me...I guess because I can relate to the lyrics.

Here's a question! What Tori songs do you not like? For me, I've never really gotten into Sister Janet, Leather (which she did waaaay too much this tour), and Hotel.

Ohh wow that is a hard question..... Lets see

    Hotel
Concertina (though I do like the line "you're the fiercest calm I have ever been in.")
    glory of the 80s
    yes, anastasia
    bonnie and clyde 97

Ohh I have also discovered her Joni Mitchell cover of "A case of you". Which is another that is becoming a favorite of mine.

Tori has got some great music. My sister turned me on to her music a few years ago. We have been to several of ther concerts together, and it is nice to have something that we both like, since we have so little in common.
    Favorite album: Little Earthquakes
    Favorite song: Winter
Love the line in Tear in Your Hand: If you need me, I'll be hanging out with the Dream King. A reference to Morpheous in the wonderful Sandman comic.
Tori songs I do not like: her covers of Heart of Gold and Happiness is a Warm Gun.

I like her cover of A Case of You as well...and Boys in the Trees. I love Glory of the 80s ;) That was like one of my favorites on TVAB along with Bliss when that CD set was released. I never really cared for Yes, Anastasia either until I got the Under the Pink sheet music book, and ever since I've played it, I like it. I just wish she would do the whole song instead of cutting it back, and have like a string ensemble accompany her live. In fact, I'd love to see Tori play with like an orchestra, or small ensemble someday...

Off of Strange Little Girls, I love Rattlesnakes, but I have to say that I like the live version better than the studio version.

Fingorfin-- I'm not entirely fond of Heart of Gold either...but I'd be interested to see her do Happiness is a Warm Gun live with the band.

I just do not think it is possible to improve on the Beatles. But I am happy to hear that lovely voice live no matter what she is singing.

    I agree completely ;)

It's time for me to get some sleepytime...and set my computer up to download a few more Tori live shows from the past tour. Anyone have a favorite out of the ones available so far?

Now, this is a thread I must post in...!

There are many female singers that I adore, but there's no musical artist out there that can compare to Tori Amos in my eyes. Her music is simply incredible. She is triply blessed in the areas of musical talent: her beautifully expressive voice, her lovely and passionate piano playing, and especially her skill for writing wonderful lyrics that strike sincere and often very poignant emotional chords. And besides that, she is just an incredibly strong and compassionate human being.

I think that the Tori Amos albums that I listen to most are Little Earthquakes (first Tori CD I ever bought) and From the Choirgirl Hotel. However, I love all her albums. Boys for Pele is just flat-out amazing, a true masterpiece... definitely a challenging album because it's just so different from... well, almost anything, really! But it does exactly what good art should do... expresses ideas and emotions in a way that is fresh, unique, and often surprising. Under the Pink is incredibly lovely and wonderfully deep. The songs are beautiful enough to just enjoy for the sound of them, but the lyrics add a whole new dimension.

(I'd continue my lavishing of well-deserved, if somewhat excessively wordy praise onto To Venus and Back, Strange Little Girls, and the afore mentioned Earthquakes and Choirgirl, but I'm running out of steam here... bear with me, it's late and I just got done celebrating my 16th birthday. ;) )

I don't think I've ever met a Tori song that I didn't at least like... I'm not quite so crazy about one or two of the cuts off Strange Little Girls, but I definitely like them. Actually, though I am highly impressed by her haunting cover of '97 Bonnie and Clyde, I can hardly stand to listen to it... it just makes me hurt inside to hear it.

But anyway, I can never choose a favorite Tori Amos song because I love almost all of them so much. Basically, my favorite Tori Amos song is whatever Tori Amos song I happen to be listening to at any given moment. (Which right now would be Raspberry Swirl, by the way.) :)

Gosh, that ended up being a rather long post, didn't it? I'm sorry... I have a tendancy to babble where Tori is concerned. :)

I like her cover of the Cure's 'Lovesong'... that was good stuff.
Tori Amos is talented, but nobody really gets her... I'm one of them.

saerah -- have you ever heard Yoko Ono music? Contrary to popular belief, it's actually quite good, especially her songs on "Double Fantasy".

Perhaps you'd like to check it out.

If not -- hey, still good friends.

I loved Cornflake Girl. She has a top voice for her music, however I never really got into her stuff.

Oh, and unlike Snax, I loved what she did with Teen Spirit. I thought it was great.

mjeh-- wow, thanks for sharing all of that! You can't babble enough when it comes to Tori, so feel free to post more ;)

There's a bit of my Tori story at my Tori site.. the exact URL is http://sunday.learntotake.net/about.html .

Snax, interesting comment. Although she didn't murder Kurt Cobain literally, which is kind of ironic because he took his own life, I like her cover. I also loooove her cover of Purple Rain that she did during the Dew Drop Inn Tour and how she tied it in with Hey Jupiter. Gets me every time.

I haven't heard her cover of purple rain, but I really enjoy her smells like teen spirit/american pie.

I also like boys in trees, though I haven't heard it that often.

Its funny for me I have been trying to get some of her live stuff and rareties here recently. I'll d/l them and if I really like it, I'll keep it.

I think I've downloaded everything Audrey has up at www.hereinmyhead.com/sounds with my mediocre 56k connection. I recommend Purple Rain from her Los Angeles 96 performance, which is available to d/l at ftp.tal.org.

if I had a faster connection, i'd share my mp3s more often..and share my boot collection in SHN format too, but it takes me a long time to d/l anything myself.
