I was wondering about the imperial torpedo spheres. What did they look like? What were they used for (BDZ?)? How many were made? where were they mention ? -Thanks, Allan.
Here is what Steve Sansweet's Star Wars Encyclopedia has to say on the torpedo sphere: "A siege platform designed to knock out planetary shields prior to Imperial attacks, it was a precursor to the Death Star battle stations. The large 1900-meter-diameter torpedo sphere was covered with thousands of dedicated energy receptors designed to analyze sheild emissions and find weak points. When a site was selected, a rain of missiles could be fired from a group of 500 proton torpedo tubes. A hole in the shields for even a brief period allowed the sphere's turbolasers to destroy the planetary shield generators if the targeting and analysis was correct". The book gives the Imperial Sourcebook from WEG (Greg Gorden, 1989) as a reference.

I wonder if there was another variety of torpedo spheres, given that the original EGtVV said that only Torpedo Spheres were larger than the Executor.
Has it ever been mentioned as to when this was ever used? I dont recall if it was ever used in the books.
As of the second Imperial Sourcebook, only six were ever built. They're basically a one-trick-pony of an offensive weapon, performing a very important task, but otherwise basically useless, or they'd be all over the place like the ubiquitous ImpStar Deuce. Grand Admiral Pitta did fight Grand Admiral Grunger with one, and Grunger wound up ramming his Super Star Destroyer into Pitta's torpedo sphere, killing both of them.
That latter info, btw, comes from the Who's Who article on the Grand Admirals that SWI ran a few issues ago.
The order of battle for a bombard-fleet in the same ISB gives twenty Torpedo-Spheres to a single bombard-fleet. Habitable Crust on a ship, that has only 1,900 meter diameter at best? Perhaps they´ve forgotten to add a zero to the lenght.
so i would imagine that once a Torpedo Sphere is out of torps, it's pretty useless, unless it also have offensive turbolaser or ion batteries.
I'd imagine that in battle once the TS is out of torps it's usless but that that it's torp complement can be replaced.
FTeik Though I've seen not one bombard fleet in actual use, I imagine that particular order of battle was a hypothetical one.
Possible, but unlikely, since it had come to the attention of the rebels, who constantely UNDER-estimated imperial power (what would be the opposite of hyperbole, especially since we are dealing with report to the RebelHighCommand, where hyperbole has nothing lost). A torpedo-sphere has ten turbolasers in addition to its torpedo-launchers.
