Tractor Beam Scene

In the scene from A New Hope when Obi-Wan is deactivating the tractor beam projector at the top of that tower, the stormtroopers enter and the two that are standing guard begin to chat. I think the one says 'Did you see that new TC-16?' If I did hear right, what IS a TC-16?

 

i think its a TIE fighter model, probalby the one Darth Vader flies, but i could be wrong

 

Whatever it is, it's got top gassing. That's all I know.

 

"It's really something to see."

 

I thought it was 'T-16', which is a skyhopper, but 'new' I don't get.

 

I don't recall hearing those lines. Perhaps they were quieter than the other lines the Stormies spoke?

From what I remember the lines are as follows according to the script:

OFFICER
Secure this area until
the alert is canceled.

FIRST TROOPER
Give me regular reports.

All but two of the stormtroopers leave.

FIRST TROOPER
Do you know what's going on?

SECOND TROOPER
Maybe it's another drill.

Ben moves around the tractor beam, watching the stormtroopers as they turn their backs to him. Ben gestures with his hand toward them, as the troops think they hear something in the other hallway. With the help of the Force, Ben deftly slips past the troopers and into the main hallway.

SECOND TROOPER
What was that?

FIRST TROOPER
Oh, it's nothing. Don't worry about it.

 

none of the scripts i have looked at have shown it, but i know ive heard something like that. maybe the troopers were filling the gap. i will have to watch and crank up the volume

 

I think that the part that they are talking about happens right before what you posted, E_V.

INTERIOR: DEATH STAR -- UNUSED HALLWAY.

The group exits the garbage room into a dusty, unused hallway.
Han and Luke remove the trooper suits and strap on the blaster
belts.

HAN: If we can just avoid any more female advice, we ought to be able
to get out of here.

Luke smiles and scratches his head as he takes a blaster
from Solo.

LUKE: Well, let's get moving!

Chewie begins growling and points to the hatch to the
garbage room, as he runs away and then stops howling.

HAN: (to Chewie) Where are you going?

The Dia Nogu bangs against the hatch and a long, slimy
tentacle works its way out of the doorway searching for a
victim. Han aims his pistol.

LEIA: No, wait. They'll hear!

Han fires at the doorway. The noise of the blast echoes
relentlessly throughout the empty passageway. Luke simply
shakes his head in disgust.

HAN: (to Chewie) Come here, you big coward!

Chewie shakes his head "no."

HAN: Chewie! Come here!

LEIA: Listen. I don't know who you are, or where you came from, but
from now on, you do as I tell you. Okay?

Han is stunned at the command of the petite young girl.

HAN: Look, Your Worshipfulness, let's get one thing straight! I take
orders from one person! Me!

LEIA: It's a wonder you're still alive. (looking at Chewie) Will
somebody get this big walking carpet out of my way?

Han watches her start away. He looks at Luke.

HAN: No reward is worth this.

They follow her, moving swiftly down the deserted corridor.

 

And the point of that was...?

 

Well, like I said, I think. I was not very sure, but I do remember that thing about, "hey, have you seen the new ____". I could never tell what it was, though.

I was just showing in the script that there wasn't a chit chat of that nature between the troopers. SBC suggested it was before E_V's post, and I was just showing that before what he posted, nothing of that nature occurred.

 

I checked this one on my VHS by turning on Closed Captioning, and if I remember correctly, it's a "BT-16."

 

Now I'm really curious.

I just listened to it and they say "Have you seen the new PT-16?"

That according to the CUSWE as linked above is a new spaceship design, it was discussed aboard the first Death Star by two stormtroopers - believed to have been Tag Greenley and Bink Otuana - standing guard near the tractor beam Obi-Wan Kenobi disables. ~CUSWE

 

Well, interesting. While the PT-16 makes more sense, and is quoted as a source in the CUSWE; the BT-16 is what the captions say.

I love it. Doesn't make much sense, and seems like linking the EU to the movies simply for the sake of doing so, but it's still funny.

 

Well, one of the sources is Tag and Bink are Dead. So, it isn't just linking the EU to the OT just to link.

EDIT: As an interesting sidenote, the first few times that I saw that scene I thought that he said, "Maybe its another girl." I always thought that that was funny until I figured out that he said drill.

 

Maybe Closed Captioning does say PT-16. It's been about two years since I checked it, so maybe I'll check it out again later and double-check.

 

Lately, I always thought that it was weird that Stormtroopers were having casual conversations like that. I thought they were supposed to be clones with no life or interests. It almost seems like they have a normal social life outside of the Death Star.

 

i was just looking through the pictures to change my icon and I saw an icon title T-16. Maybe they are talking about the imperial shuttle, T-16

 

T-16 isn't an Imperial Shuttle, a T-16 is what Luke flied on Tatooine and plays with in the first garage scene with 3PO

 

look in the ANH icon page. thats what its called there. Full name is T-16 Skyhopper, unless they have the wrong name with wrong vehicle, but i doubt the moderators made such a mistake
