Typically I'm skeptical of remakes of classics.

But when you have the Coen Brothers directing and Jeff BRIDGES as the lead.....damn, this is going to be GOOD. :)

    EDIT -- Thanks, ASG. [face_blush]

I don't know... I don't think anything can ever top Jeff Daniels epic performance in the crapfest known as Dumb and dumber.

my first instinct was that this is one film that really doesn't need a remake, but it looks great.

The film doesn't need a remake, period, and the Coens pratfall with another film that didn't need a remake, "The Ladykillers" should be a warning to them.

Wait, the Coen brothers are meant to be good?

    They're films usually fall under one of the following categories;
    - Unfunny
    - Pointless
    - Anti-climatic endings
    - Rehash of their previous films

I thought the Big Lebowski was really good when I saw it aged 13...I watched it again recently, and it was meh like most of their films. No Country For Old Men's ending ruins a great film

    Blood Simple rules.

    Raising Arizona rules.

    Barton Fink rules.

Didn't care to much for Fargo.

"a serious man" left me a bit flat, i felt like maybe you had to be jewish to really get it. also thought "burn after reading" and "the ladykillers" were a bit meh, but other than that i love pretty much all of their films. "miller's crossing" is definitely in my all-time top 5.

"A Serious Man" is the most Jewish film I've ever seen. Obviously in content but also in form. I loved it, but I think I have my Jewish-American lit class in college and my other Jewish studies related courses to thank for that. Otherwise I don't think I would have gotten it.

I love the Coen Brothers. And when I watched this trailer right now... major chills. Will definitely be seeing this.

Zaz is kind of an expert on identifying cinematic pratfalls and potential cinematic pratfalls.

Yeah, been waiting for a decent Western. This could be it. I don't think the John Wayne True Grit has aged all that well, to be honest...not one of my favourites, but the potential is there.

It doesn't take expertise to realize the possibility of a John Wayne remake being horrid. And I agree that The Ladykillers was a misstep for the Coens. I'm just saying I think this, at least by the trailer, looks like it has the potential to be really good.

Miller's Crossing was the Coen's take on The Glass Key, and that turned out great. I'm not sure why you'd want to remake True Grit, though, unless you're a big fan of the source novel. Has anybody read it?

No idea, how this is gonna turn out. I just know that if it gets nominated for Best Picture or Best Actor for Jeff Bridges and he wins, than I'll just sit there and wonder why John Wayne got screwed over for so many other rolls that he did that were great and never got an award for them (i.e. THE SEARCHERS)

edit: Josh Brolin in this looks like Christian Bale

Um, John Wayne won the oscar for his portrayal of Cogburn tin the original True Grit. So, blah blah blah much to learn young padawan, blah blah blah
