Today as I read through the comic books I've acquired recently that are introducing me to the expanded universe something occured to me. I've noticed that Twi'leks are capable of being Jedi. Shaak Ti and Aayla are the two that stick out in my mind the most, however I noticed on the video game Jedi Academy you can only be a female twi'lek, I was wondering if the females of this species are the only ones capable of being Jedi for some reason. I figured the extended universe literature would be the place to look but I don't have to much resource into it so that is that. . as always thanks to anyone who can answer my question.

Shaak-Ti is a Togruta (sp?) not a Twi'lek. And there have been some male Twi'lek Jedi. The one from The Tales of the Jedi series comes to mind. Doneeta, I think his name was.

IIRC, there's a Jedi Master who is a male twi'lek in Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter.

There's a male Twi'lek who gets decappitated in the Battle of Jabiim. There's also appears to be a male Twi'lek in that new KOTOR Era Tales...

It seems to me the Twi'leks are the second most populous species in the Jedi order after humans. Humans have reached that due to sheer weight of numbers, but the Twi'leks are far less numerous, and thus have a greater ratio of Force-users to non-Force-users than humans. As for Togruta, there does indeed seem to be a link between Togruta and Twi'leks, perhaps as close as tigers are to leopards.

and as for Jedi Academy, most people prefer female Twi'Leks for apparent reasons

(being the male to female starwars fan ratio)

Master Zhar trained Revan, and happened to be a male Twi'lek who could speak pretty good Basic.

In fact, every Jedi Twi'lek in KOTOR is male.

Off the top of my head--

Aayla Secura: AotC, RotS, and Republic comics
    Tot Doneeta: TotJ comics
Blue female Twi'lek: Republic comics (or Jedi, can't remember)
    Male Twi'lek: Republic comics
    Male Twi'lek: Omega Squad: Targets
Male Twi'lek: Star Wars Tales #23
    Female Twi'lek: Dark Tide
    Misc. female Twi'leks: Jedi Academy

    There's been quite a few.

IIRC, there's a Jedi Master who is a male twi'lek in Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter.

Anoon Bondara: this Twi'lek Jedi Master was a contemporary of Qui-Gon Jinn, and was a master of the teras kasi martial arts. Master Bondara was also the teacher of Darsha Assant. When Darsha was ordered by the Jedi Council to retrieve Oolth the Fondorian from the Crimson Corridor of Coruscant, Master Bondara questioned the Council's objectives in sending the padawan into such dangerous territory. However, he was forced to let her go. When she returned many hours later, without Oolth and speaking of the Fondorian's death, Master Bondara tried to calm her down and asked her to retrace her steps, so that they could determine it Oolth had survived. Unfortunately, they found no trace of Oolth's body, and ended up in the crossfire of Darth Maul's attempt to execute Lorn Pavan. Hoping to buy Darsha and Lorn time to escape, Master Bondara attacked the Sith lord during a speeder chase. Hoping to catch Maul by surprise, Bondara leaped onto his speeder and attempted to disarm Maul. When that failed, Bondara realized that he had only one option. Bondara used his lightsaber to ignited the power cells of Maul's speeder, causing an explosion which took his life but, unfortunately, not Maul's.

There's also the easily-slain Jedi Master in Omega Squad: Targets, and a Jedi general in Clone Campaigns.

What makes you say that? Is it just your guess based on slight visual similarity, or is there some source for that info? Because based on the EU info I know about Togruta as a species, they sound very different.

I'm implying that it is probable that there is a rather recent common ancestor between the two, as evidenced by some shared morphology found only in a handful of species, Togruta and Twi'leks included. My statement related the upper-level of relation, and is based on visual observations and Occam's razor.

Norcuna, and Xiann Amersu are the Twi'lek's from Republic. Although Norcuna has very short lekku, so he may not be a twi'lek after all.

There is also Siolo-Ur-Manka from tales story 'nameless', referenced in the latest Dark Forces article.

Tavion is the main twi'lek in Jedi academy.

Probably. I don't think I ever heard her name, but picked up Tavion somewhere, so stuck them together. :)

Tavion is the main underling of the chief bad guy in Jedi Outcast, which Jedi Academy is...well, basically an expansion pack to.

Anyway, considering Togruta and Twi'leks evolved on different planets, I'd wager they're just products of similiar environments, not a branched evolution (like Duros and Neimoidians). The fact that the Togruta have those resonating chambers in their heads relates them closer to several other races, whose names escape me now. Besides, it's not like it's rare for SW races to have head-tentacles (are they only called lekku in the case of twi'leks?).

(are they only called lekku in the case of Twi'leks?).

No...Togruta also have lekku, as do Chagrians (Mas Amedda's race), I think. That said, I agree that Twi'leks, Togruta, and Chagrians are supposed to be examples of parallel evolution. Each race developed lekku because it was beneficial for each of them at some time or another.... That doesn't mean that they are related species/races.

This isn't true, because the Apprentice to Master Uthar on Korriban is a female Twi'lek. Can't remember her name, though.

Twi'lek are also the most common race of alien Jedi in the New Jedi Order.

    Daeshara'cor - green female
    Swilja Fenn - ? female
    Alema Rar - blue female
    Numa Rar - blue female
    a Twilek youngling in DTO
    white male in Union

Also as has been mentioned earlier, Alora - red female.

So that is 6 Twi'lek Jedi in Luke's Order of only about 100!

There's also a generic male Twi'lek in the Clone Wars 3-pack of nameless Jedi (along with a human who vaguely looks like Luke and a Rodian). :)
