Does anything in the EU explain the significance of the different skin colors of Twi'leks? Is it different races? different castes? Can a blue Twi'lek and a red Twi'lek mate? Would it be a purple Twi'lek, or one of the parent's colors?

I assume it's just different races. That, and Lucas wanted hot blue/green chicks in his movies. Nothing wrong with that. ;)

I'm assuming that a hybrid color would either blend the two, pick one over the other, or have stripes of both colors.

We've seen an example of the third one in AOTC...

The same thing happens if you breed flowers of different colors, or horses of different colors...

I would think that variations in Twi'lek skin color are no different than variations in human skin color. EU has specifically referred to blue-skinned Twi'leks as Rutian and red-skinned Twi'leks as Lethan (a much rarer type - like an albino).

I think I remember reading in the TPM visual dictionary that red-skinned Twi'leks are rarer. What about the green or white ones?

We've had green (Oola), blue (Aalya), white (Fortuna), red (TPM), yellow (Coruscant and the Core Worlds), and purple (KotOR.)

I'm sure there are various shades of each color, as well.

I thought I read something somewhere that said Twi'leks could dye their skin different colors. Am I totally off?

I recall there being a discussion once before about the differences in Twi'lek skin color. One of the explanations for the different colors indicated that Twi'leks of certain colors lived close to the sunlit side of Ryloth, while the others lived close to the darkside of the world. I can't remember exactly the final remarks of the explanation, but it amounted to either light-skinned Twi'leks living close to the sunside, while dark-skinned Twi'leks lived close to the darkside or the other way around. I don't know if the forementioned explanation "holds water" at the present time, though...

Hmmm, half cast Twi'leks is interesting, though is there any evidence to support the idea that they would adopt an 'in between' of the parents skin colours?

Another theory could be that it is similar to eye colour, where a certain skin colour would be genetic recessive and dominant, so the child would likely adopt the skin of one of the parents e.g 'The allele for brown eyes was considered dominant over the allele for blue eyes'

We also have examples of different shades.

We have Aayla, and that other blue Jedi in the clone wars. They are both blue, but different shades.

    "Allele." Now there's a word I haven't heard in a LONG time =D=

We have Aayla, and that other blue Jedi in the clone wars. They are both blue, but different shades.

And don't forget Sebulba's two masseuses from Ep I

    Very interesting!

I wonder if Twi'lek parents, who are Red and Blue respectively, will their child come out Green? (Is that how colors are made, I forget the logic)

On another note, I wonder if there is racism amongst Twi'lek society against different colors?

It's probably just akin to different races of humans on Earth. Same species, different race.

    From my own imagination:
It is impossible for different coloured Twi'Leks to have a child. Geneitics do not allow it.
That is why the Red colour is rare.

Like I said form my own imagination ;)

yes. I got to say that twi'leks do seem to be the trademark alien for Star Wars. They appear everywhere.

Actually, there's a good logical explanation for this that would still fit within the realm of known genetic science: the red skin tone is actually the Twi'lek's most recessive skin tone, without any other pigmentation (it is an existing pigment in all races). The other skin tones are the result of various versions of the same gene, which in turn create their own pigmentations, ranging the scale from white and yellow to blue and green.

This corresponds almost exactly to the human version of this: albinism, in which it is a complete lack of pigmentation that causes to skin to be so white. Likewise, it also explains why the other colors are rarely seen blended. They only express one or another version of the same gene, except in certain cases of codominance.

For example: the "pink"-skinned Koyi Komad's color can be explained as a partially expressed W (white) gene and the regular (N) gene, for redness.

    The rutians would have NN.

Aayla would have something like BB for totally blue, whereas some of the others might be lighter in color and be BW, or something like that.

    Green would be BY, etc.

Then one simply arranges a hierarchy of dominance, say B/Y/W/N, and there you go. Theoretically, then, almost any combination is possible, especially if (as in humans) multiple genes are responsible for the expression of this sequence (so you could have BBYW or something... which would be like, teal).

    Got it? :D

There's also an orange and spotted one in RotS (the opera scene when Anakin is running up the steps).
