Why have Aayla Secura and other female Twi'leks this cone like at the sides of their Head while Shado as a Male Twi'lek has ears? . And what are these cone like thing supposed to be? If also Men had them then id trace them as a species intern thing , but as shado has ordinary ears. (And one cant really see what DarthTalon has..)

Funny, i was reading some issues of Republic the other day, and i thought the exact same thing. It's not exactly clear in most drawings whether that's part of the anatomy or part of a headdress-type thing. Of course, that's probably since there's very few pics of female Twi'leks where the "ears" are the, ahem, focal points for the eye. o_O

    for whatever reason, that's g-canon.

Bib Fortuna has ears, while Oola has cones.

I had almost the same thought; it must be a knee-jerk reaction at seeing the words "Twi'lek" and "anatomy" together. ;)

Heh. I'll admit I was expecting to I'd have to redirect this thing to the Sex Thread or Ugly Twi'lek thread. :p

The Ears vs. Cones thing is an ongoing minor continuity puzzle. In the films, Twi'leks are pretty uniform: all females appear to have earhorns, while all males appear to have ears. However, that is not always the case in the EU---a few sources depict images of female Twi'leks with normal ears instead of cones. In writing, Tales from Jabba's Palace suggests that Oola's "cones" are actually part of her headdress and that they cover up her real ears, making it somewhat hard to hear. Yet in the films the cones are usually the same color as the Twi'lek's skin, indicating that they are indeed parts of the Twi'lek body. Though, Twi'lek females are rarely seen without some sort of head covering, so its still theoretically possible that the cones are parts of their clothing painted the same color as their skin.

The female Twi'lek model in Jedi Academy can be used without any sort of head covering, and it shows that the cones are positioned where the ears would normally be, pretty much proving that cones replace ears for female Twi'leks. The structure of the Twi'lek ear could be some sort of a sex-linked trait. Any female Twi'leks with human-like ears would then be mutants or be from a rare subspecies.

It still doesn't make much sense, though. Why would only the males have human-like ears?

Perhaps there is some species or cultural taboo about females showing their ears? That could explain the covering being part of the headdress.

A taboo that forbids exposing the ears but leaves everything else (literally) up for grabs?

You never know. I've seen National Geographic pics of natives in New Guinea (I think) whose only 'clothing' is a sheaf covering the penis. Everything else is on display, so to speak.

Maybe the ears are only shown in private.

If i remember correctly when designing a Twi'lek character for Galaxies you could increase and decrease ear size. If you made them real small they just looked like small bumps, similar to human ear size...and if you made them big they looked like the cones. I always just assumed it was the headdress though.

I've always felt that it was just a headdress thing, but there are few good pictures of Twi'lek females without those on showing the ear region. I have always been iffy about the cover of Legacy #1. It could be cones, but they look a little big.

In Jedi Academy (the video game) you can select your race.

There are many character models in the game. One such model is a twi'lek with cones instead of ears. She does not have a headdress or any sort of head covering.

What he said. Model as in computer model and used as in chosen to play as.

[face_plain] Kriffing LucasArts. Their "updated" site is a waste of space and they took down the all the good old stuff. I was going to show an example of the Twi'lek model, but it seems they trashed the whole place when they did their "update." Good job.

I always figured the females had both, and the ears were just covered by their headdress.

On the other hand, the cones could be a fetishized mutation sought in slave girls and consorts. Most of the Twi'lek females we've seen, after all, have been current or former dancers, escorts, or courtiers, rather than just average Twi'lek women that stay on Ryloth.

Thank you. I had this image in my head of a robotic mannequin of a female Twi'lek in Luke's private chambers at the Jedi Academy and...I think I'll leave it at that.

I've always assumed there were. Twi'lek women don't make it off planet unless someone buys them or they have something to offer, and more often than not what people want Twi'lek women for is their physical beauty and professions that require it. I always assumed there were plenty of ugly to average Twi'lek women on Ryloth performing domestic duties and just...living their oppressed little live.
