UK > USA. Prince William Has Married Kate Middleton

Prince William has become engaged to his partner Kate Middleton.

Clarence House has confirmed that the couple will marry next year. They will live in North Wales following a ceremony expected to be in the spring or summer.

According to BBC News, the couple became engaged last month during a private holiday in Kenya.

William, who is is second in the line of succession to the throne behind his father Prince Charles, met Middleton when they were studying at the University of St Andrews in Fife in 2001. Their relationship is believed to have begun in December 2003.

The pair were reported to have split up in 2007, but were later seen at public engagements together.

Prime Minister David Cameron has said that he is "delighted" at news of the Royal engagement and that he wishes the couple "all the best".

On Twitter, Labour leader Ed Miliband added: "Delighted for Prince William and Kate Middleton on their engagement. The whole country will be wishing them every happiness."

I remember when Prince Andrew got engaged to Sarah Ferguson and there was so much buzz about him marrying a "commoner." I haven't heard such buzz this time, unless there is something I've missed. And Kate will be Queen, Sarah was never in line for that. Interesting change, in a good way.

 

Of course, we all know how well that marriage to a commoner worked out.

 

Middleton is pretty hot.

 

I always got the impression Wills was a bit marriage shy. And given the car crash his parents marriage turned into, who can blame him?

I'm not that fussed about this news, to be honest, but it is very good news for the UK tourist industry. Might turn my house into a B&B next summer and cash in!

 

The Queen is totally going to live to be 100, like her mother, and Bonnie Prince Charlie's got those genes too. I don't know if I'll live to see William king [face_old]

 

The odd thing about the Windsors is that the men don't usually live as long as the women. I've always thought theres a reasonable chance Charles may never be King because the Queen would outlive him. I once looked into making a bet with a bookie, but I couldn't find any odds.

 

Prince Phillip is older than The Queen.

If Her Majesty lives as long as her mother did, Charles may be too old to be King and so could give up the right in favour of his son.
Then again, we could get a lot of public holidays. One when The Queen dies, one when Charles III is crowned, one when he dies and another when William IV is crowned.

As for the wedding, I'm not that bothered as the taxpayer will have to fork out for it. She'll at least be a glamorous Queen to go with probably the only handsome member of the Royal Family.

 

As with all news of the British royal family, I am immediately reminded of The Naked Gun.

No matter how silly the idea of having a queen might be to us, as Americans, we must be gracious and considerate hosts.

 

^If we can put up with you guys awarding your President the title of "Leader of the Free World", you can put up with us having Kings and Queens.

It's actually amazing how that post sounds to someone in the U.S. (me at least). I think it's really cool in an old world kind of way but I can't deny I kind of wince internally too. Not judging, just think it's interesting.
