Ask the Jedi Council confirms what many were fairly certain but others weren't quite so sure about:

Q: Who's voice was used for Darth Vader in the Special Edition of The Empire Strikes Back ? I'm talking about the part when he says "Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival."

A: That was James Earl Jones . The line was recorded for A New Hope but never used

I wonder when it was going to be used in ANH. ?[face_plain]

Maybe at one time Vader was to go down on Tatooine to search for the droids. That would be a sensible line for him to say when returning.

    You're probably right.

It would have to be before Han et al escape from Tatooine, because the Star Destroyer isn't in the movie from there on out.

I'd guess it'd be during the "there will be no one to stop us this time!" conversation aboard the Tantive IV.

Hmm. I forgot he wasn't on-board his ship in that scene. ;)

I'd have to agree with you.

Huh, I guess I'd read somehwre that the voice was done by someone who does Vader for one of the Computer Games. Interesting info.

I always thought that addition in ESB:SE (about the only one in the film I hated) didn't sound anything like James Earl Jones. I'll have to give it a watch again. Any excuse to watch THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. :)

Huh, that's strange. The line doesn't really sound like Vader in the rest of ESB, but it doesn't quite sound like him in ANH, either. He delivered his lines with much less reserve in ANH.

I guess I'll have to listen to it again.

It certainly sounds like JEJ, but it does not sound like Vader. They need to do something with that recording so it sounds Vaderish.

I'd have to listen to the scene again, but I think actually that the voice we hear in that scene and the ESB voice are pretty close. And its logical to assume that this is scene the line came from.

Lars_Muul: "They need to do something with that recording so it sounds Vaderish."

They need to lowere the tone of it and give the sound more echo.

    Some thoughts:

    1. The line may have been edited/cobbled together from different takes.

    2. Vader's voice "flanging" (which makes it sound robotic, etc.) was different in ANH than the other films. Attempts were probably made to coat the line with ESB-type amplification, which may account for some distortion.

    3. The line(s) almost certainly came from the scene aboard the Blockade Runner, although it doesn't appear in any script draft I know of. Can anyone check on the scripts and find out for sure?

It's possible the line was spoken on-set by Prowse and later changed to something else, and this is merely an early pass at having JEJ say the original line.

If you watch the on-set audio version of some of the blockade runner scenes included on the THX WOW LD, a few of Vader's lines are different when spoken by Prowse on-set, ie:

    ::as he chokes Antilles::

"This ship carries the crest of Alderaan! Was any of the royal family onboard?!"

I don't bash the Special Editions, but this is one change that should be returned to the orriginal "Bring My Shuttle"... Somehow he created a mood of such emotionless malice ... you knew Vader was pissed. And it is one thing I'd like to see restored.

Agreed. I didn't like it. The additional also ruined the flow of John Williams' score for that scene, just as the addition of the shuttle landing in the Star Destroyer and Vader exiting ruined the flow of Williams' kick-ass "Hyperspace" cue.

Preposterous. Who are you to presume that Star Wars fans are smart enough to figure out how Vader got from Bespin to Executor all by themselves? ;)

Personally I always thought he got there by flushing himself down the toilet myself.

Thank goodness the SE version of ESB has showed me the error of my ways! ;)

Hmm, I have to agree I don't think it sounds a thing like JEJ either. (Of course, ANH Vader doesn't sound much like ESB or ROTJ Vader.)

(Of course, ANH Vader doesn't sound much like ESB or ROTJ Vader.)

It'll never happen, but I'm a big proponent of re-recording some of the Vader ANH lines for the next release. It doesn't surprise me that the shuttle line is from ANH because:

    1) doesn't sound like the real Vader
    2) the delivery sucks (not worse than "now the circle is complete..." though)

I do wish all the SE bashers who assumed and hated on GL & LFL for not getting JEJ to do the line would eat some crow though.

This doesn't surprise me too much, other than not being able to figure out where in ANH Vader would have said this originally! I always thought TESB:SE voice sounded too ANH, not matching at all! Now I know why it sounded like that!

"I don't bash the Special Editions, but this is one change that should be returned to the orriginal "Bring My Shuttle"... Somehow he created a mood of such emotionless malice ... you knew Vader was pissed. And it is one thing I'd like to see restored"

I agree, but disagree LottDodd! I like the new footage of Vader walking towards the Imperial shuttle that is sitting on the Cloud City landing platform. That scene makes the phrase "Bring my shuttle" pointless. The new line, however, is silly sounding and I believe the scene would benefit by simply having Vader say nothing as he strolls towards the shuttle! We all know he is pissed and his silence would speak volumes!

"The additional also ruined the flow of John Williams' score for that scene, just as the addition of the shuttle landing in the Star Destroyer and Vader exiting ruined the flow of Williams' kick-ass "Hyperspace" cue"

You are soooo corrrect over that Spacehunter24! The interruption in the flow of music is unforgivable! The first shot of the Imperial shuttle flying away from Bespin and towards the Super Star Destroyer is the only on that was needed, and it did not interrupt the music at all so I love it. The next scene is the bad one that kills everything to a crawl for no reason what-so-ever!

You can keep the sequence, the star destroyer landing pad and the like for all I Care... But reinstate the line. The Shuttle just landing on the pad after Vader's Request is no more preposterous than his Star Destroyer needing to be alerted for his arrival...

I don't really think there's any need for the SE line; obviously if the SSD was up there, it would be monitoring outgoing traffic from Bespin (in case the Falcon appeared) so it would identify Vader's shuttle anyway...besides, it had probably sent the thing down there. Vader wouldn't have left whatever ship he had arrived in lying around on Cloud City for Han to spot before the big surprise. 'Bring my shuttle' explains that the shuttle probably had to be hidden, or wasn't there anyway.

Or was the shuttle at a different Landing Platform then the one Vader was storming off to...

LottDodd. if you re-instate the "Bring my shuttle" line, then you have to ditch the new footage of the shuttle parked on the Bespin landing platform. Remember, Vader immediatedly walks out to the shuttle right after he would have made the infamous statement. It would make no sense to bring what is sitting right in front of you. That is why I like the idea of Vader simply saying nothing at all. "Alert my star destroyer..." is just the dumbest line in all of cinema! [face_laugh]
