I never realized until earlier today that the lake retreat where Anakin and Padme stay is called "Varykino". For those of you who have not read Doctor Zhivago, nor have seen the movie, Varykino is the name of the family estate where Zhivago and Lara hide out after he escapes from the Red Army.

Was this intentional, to draw parallels between Yuri and Lara and Anakin and Padme, maybe?

You mean the name of the Naboo estate is called Varykino?

Lucas loves the films of David Lean. I would bet it was intentional.

    It must be intentional.

I read it on a SW site, in a sections about Padme's costumes.

That's what I'm thinking too, that it was intentional.

I'm wondering if Lucas was trying to mirror the sort of quiet little love nest idea-Varykino was paradise for Yuri and Lara, a retreat away from the rest of the world.

Likewise, the lake retreat on Naboo would be the same thing, only it wouldn't be totally frozen over.

    Varykino.

    Likewise, Pasternak's Varykino was a family-owned retreat.

Alec Guiness is in Dr Zhivago and Keira Knightley was in the recent T.V. version.

Indeed the reference is intentional. In fact, without "Varykino" being common knowledge outside of fandom, I've heard people say AOTC to some degree reminds them of Dr. Zhivago.

Another David Lean reference...the plaza in Seville used for the scene after Padmé and Anakin arrive on Naboo was also used in Lawrence of Arabia.

I never knew George Lucas was as big a David Lean fan. I know Spielberg is as he mentions it every chance he gets.

Wow, I didn't know that either-the LoA thing.

DZ is one of my all time favorites!

I heard that the villa in which they filmed the Varykino scenes was the same villa where Muscolinni (SP?) was killed. Isn't that a romantic history? ;)

That's kind of sad. Almost as bizarre as NIN recording one of their albums in one of the homes that the (Charles) Manson Family murders took place.

It´s not exactly regarding the post but ever since AOTC was shot at this building located at Lake Como (sp?) there have been numerous commercials implying it as well. A European youghurt commercial with a dream sequence taking place where Anakin and Padmé first kissed as well another commercial I forgot what it was about.

I´m not saying AOTC made this place famous but it did seem to draw attention.

That's right! That site was used for, I think, the headquarters of the Brit army in LoA.

Yes, Lucas is a big David Lean fan like his bud Steven.

JediKnightOB1 LOL. Another connection: The Downward Spiral featured a track with an audio sample from the television interrogation scene from THX 1138.
