    Hi Guys,

I was just reading through the comic "Boba Fett - Salvage" and on page 7 Boba and his captive (Tsumo) are inside an abandoned freighter when they stumble upon a death casket, of solid rodomium, containing the remains of "Volpau, third cousin of Emperor Palpatine" - according to Tsumo.

Can anyone confirm from any other source whether Palpatine actually had a cousin named Volpau? or was this another case of the prequels negating previous EU.

Let me know either way please.

    Cheers,
    Darth Yasura

Well, Palpatine did have a niece, a three-eyed son, and grandson. Not impossible for him to have a cousin, but I haven't heard of it before.

The prequels don't really negate him. He might be a fake cousin, used by Palps for some fake backstory when people started asking "Where the hell did you come from?"

You know Palpatine doesn't need to have a weird Damien Thorne "All of his family was unwitting to the fact he was the Anti-Christ" backstory. It's entirely possible he was just this normal baby that later came back to 'find his roots' and be welcomed by his family.

Indeed. It appears that the "Virgin Birth" of Anakin Skywalker is not a normal Star Wars event. It occurs to me that even Sith Lords were once little 8 pound babies wailing away to have their diapers changed or be fed. He probably had a mommy and a daddy and aunties and uncles and cousins and hell, maybe even brothers and sisters. He didn't just pop into existence at age 50 with grey hair, the desire to conquer the galaxy and UNLIMITED POWER! Because of this, I see no reason why Palpatine can't have a third cousin laying around somewhere. It doesn't betray Palpatine's origins and it doesn't conflict with anything from the movies. For all we know there was still a Mr. and Mrs. Palpatine on Naboo, proud of how powerful of a Sith Lord their son had become. ;)

I do wonder how the Sith do their recruiting when the subject was not a Jedi first. Do they steal babies claiming they are going to be taken to the Jedi Temple? Do they wait untill someone comes to them searching for power? Do they wait untill they find a 7 or 8 year old and slaughter the parents in front of the kid to start them on the path to anger?

Anakin was not a virgin birth.

Shmi's virginity, or lack thereof, is not stated.

Palpatine also has a grandniece, Ederlathh Pallopides, which would imply that he could have had much closer relatives... [face_thinking]

At any rate, that comic is the only source to ever mention Volpau, and it was only in passing.

There's no reason to assume that Palpatine's third cousin and grandniece aren't his legitimate blood family relatives. In the Marvel comics, the Tagge brothers discuss having their younger sister marry into the Imperial family--it seems likely they were talking about Volpau. Palpatine had to come from some family, somewhere, and given the fact that Naboo public servants start their careers extremely early in life, it seems likely that he is who he says he is--a man of ordinary appearances from Naboo who became a senator. He just happened to join the Sith at one point or another. We may learn more about Palpatine's early life in the new Luceno novel, and that could shed some light on these family matters. Until then, I'd be willing to be that it's no accident that the only members of Palpatine's family we've heard about are obscure and distant--they may well be the only survivors of both time and his Sith training...

Oh, it's no accident at all, TC. We know he must have had an important family. The RASB describes Palpatine as a noble, so family is important. Furthermore, DESB says that Pestage blocked access to Palpatine's family records. So clearly, he must've had some relatives hanging about. :D

I hope, if and when they reveal Palpatine's birth name, his last name is Pallopides.

    Why?

It's never noted which side of the family his grandniece is on.

Meh, Palpatine is better with only one name, like Cher, or MAdonna

I agree, but that doesn't mean he was born with only a single name.

Meh, Palpatine is better with only one name, like Cher, or MAdonna

    Both of whom have surnames.

    Cher = Cherilyn Sarkisian LaPiere
Madonna = Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone
