I don't get why a Wonder Woman film would even need to touch the subject. She's a superhero; I really don't care what gender a supehero is as long as the character is written well.

The problem is, like most superheroes, she comes with baggage from her decades-old history in comics -- putting it in the nicest way possible. With Superman and Batman, you have the great fortune that you can relatively easily update them without having to mess hugely with their origins: Superman in all incarnations a suspiciously-human-looking alien brought here by The Power Of Alien Science; Batman remains a badass normal who (bar one panel in Batman #500) can't exist without the phenomenon of being orphaned by crime, and whose powers against chiefly come from The Power Of Science And Psychology.

So far as they're generally known, I would posit Wonder Woman's origins are generally (if dimly) remembered as quasi-religious at all points. (Which already lines you up for fire from cheerless atheists and theists alike.) And she's variously portrayed as not just the child or production of a god, but the child of a Greek pantheon that nobody but hipsters worship :D Thor at least manfully dealt with this obstacle by taking the Arthur C. Clarke approach of "superadvanced science = magic, we iz ancient astronauts, yo" and doing so I think really stole a march on DC, making it harder for DC to copy that route in revamping for a Wonder Woman film -- just as Marvel stole a march on any DC JLA movie by getting the Avengers out first.

Now, I've said before you can mess with the origins and take on a character in substantial ways. Indeed in some cases you have to do that or the character ultimately dies out; the very first DC comic book hero, the Crimson Avenger, died out partially for these very reasons. And the curse of it is that no matter how you try and alter the character to save it, you're going to cop flak from exactly the kind of people Diane Nelson was complaining about: rabid fanboys who can't even bear to see Superman's red trunks go, much less have the Joker played by Heath Ledger. Reading between the lines that's the sort of mindless, immature feedback DC seems to be getting back when it tries to do something a bit different with its characters, and it's why she pounds the table in saying you have to give a filmmaker licence and freedom to do things with the character. Note she does not say unlimited freedom with the character, but you'd no more put the original 1940s Wonder Woman on a 2014 movie screen than you would put a Golden Age Superman up there now, especially with Superman Returns' non-success all but nailing the coffin lid down on Donner-take or Silver Age Kal-El.

Ender, Juliet has already given us the hairy eyeball over in the MoS thread. Don't get her angry over here. You wouldn't like her when she's angry. :D :D :D

Moreso with Wonder Woman, honestly, since you'd want to avoid that whole... distinctly William Moulton Marston angle...

...the irony being the 2009 WW movie was probably closer to the William Moulton Marston angle as originally conceived than most other incarnations of the character, albeit it did it by making men bastards and therefore making women better than them, which has its own raft of unfortunate implications attached. It's not an easy character to crack.

It'll probably take the form of some awful music.

I haven't seen the WW animated film but Kev Smith speaks highly of it. Maybe I'll have to check it out.

It's not necessary but it could be handled well, so why not.

She lived in a woman only island, so of course she has to deal with the problem with men.

So, on an unrelated note, the LA Times is reporting that there is a Superman/Batman film coming in 2015, followed by Flash in 2016 and JL in 2017

A Trinity movie would be better than S&B.

And sold poorly compared to the other films. It's why solo films for Supergirl, Batgirl, Batwoman and Birds Of Prey aren't happening. In fact, it's why "Superman/Batman: Apocalypse" was named that instead of "Superman/Batman: The Supergirl From Krypton".

Burton isn't exactly reliable. He's also said that he's read "The Dark Knight Returns" and "The Killing Joke".

Not at all. Many a comic fan likes two Burton films more than the Nolan films, as well as those who just like it in general. I'm a comic fan and enjoyed the two films that Burton did and Schumacher's first film. Hell, I own the expanded scores for both of Burton's films, as well as the Prince album.

Thanks, in part to it coming from Steve Engelhardt's story outline which was based on "Strange Apparitions".

It's not bad. Not the greatest, but not bad. Co-written by Gail Simone. Nathan Fillion works as Steve Trevor.

Given that they've already tried to do a B/S movie (heh...), it makes sense that they would try to reapproach that project concept first.

It sold pretty well among the DC animated movies, even better than some of the S&B movies.

Wish they had thought to do this before completing the Dark Knight trilogy. Would have been nice to see Bale and Cavill together instead of some new actor as Batman.

Well, they did think of it- but the loss of momentum from retooling MOS from being Superman Returns 2 into a reboot sidetracked that.

I mean, they obviously meant for the two franchises to parallel one another, just going by titles alone (SR/BB, MOS/TDK).

I'm not sure which thread to discuss this in, but yeah it will feel like a missed opportunity if Snyder & co. have to re-cast Batman. Bale is just so damn perfect in the part! But I understand the producers and studios want to keep the Nolanverse separate and distinct from any other DC films. Which will mean no JGL either. Time to call Armie Hammer or Josh Holloway or Karl Urban!

Since they had the line from Dark Knight Returns in that preview... wouldn't it be awesome if Bale came out of retirement to take up the mantle of Batman again to deal with Superman.

At the risk of being castigated for anything I say regarding Man of Steel, I think this is emblematic of what's wrong with the DC strategy, if they even have one, and are entering into "panic mode" again because Superman underperformed relative to their internal estimates / pre-release tracking.

(please note, MoS is a profitable movie -- I'm not saying it's not)

Yes. Yes it would. It seems unlikely at this point, but I would pretty much expire and go to comic book movie geek heaven if that scenario played out.

Which is a big mistake, the 5 Marvel heroes all got their own solo, but they didn't want to give WW, one of the Trinity a live action one?

It does not need to be that iconic, as long as the story is good enough that's fine.
