Pendant on the necklace says "Bruce."

Reports were that Birds of Prey would start filming at the start of January 2019, so this could be the first day of the shoot and thus no costumes aside from Harley Quinn.

Granted, there's really nothing to get excited about from that promo video, as (to me), it looked like a run of the mill cosplay video, where cosplayers are about to reveal their costumes.

That being said, I think DC/WB it trying to ride the coat tails of Aquaman and the fans support of Suicide Squad quite a bit. They might have more of a teaser trailer by the time Shazam! hits theaters, which is only a couple of months away.

Here's a typical example. Around the 1:13 of the following video, the cosplayer reveals his costume if front of a green screen, or in this case a green blanket.

In the comics, she's been Batgirl, Black Bat, and Orphan, with the last moniker being her most recent and current codename. In this film, I'm guessing she's just... Cassandra. She's way too young to be Batgirl in this film. The only other two who'd have costumes are Black Canary and Huntress, and it looks like they're going for a more street clothes approach as opposed to actual superhero suits, although there are brief peaks at slightly more comic accurate outfits. This looks like it was a filmed costume test, and we're just seeing the least revealing stuff as a way of letting us know they've started shooting.

Anyway, I'm all for this. Weirdly enough, it looks like it might actually be what I wanted Suicide Squad to be; a lower budget, R-rated, street level vigilante film with DC characters. Never would have expected that.

    https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/matt-reeves-batman-film-will-noir-tale-rogues-gallery/

Things have been awfully quiet on the Batman front, with Planet Of The Apes director Matt Reeves preferring to keep working on the script rather than offer constant updates. But now in a career profile interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he's talking more about what is still – at least for now – known simply as The Batman.

"It's very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale," Reeves tells the trade mag. "It's told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it's going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It's more Batman in his detective mode than we've seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He's supposed to be the world's greatest detective, and that's not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I'd love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it's going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation."

The Dark Knight, of course, will need crimes to investigate, and Reeves has plans on that front too. "There will be a Rogues Gallery. The casting process will begin shortly. We're starting to put together our battle plan. I'm doing another pass on the script and we'll begin some long-lead stuff to start developing conceptual things."

Reeves is mum on the casting for Batman himself – so we still don't know whether Ben Affleck will be back in the cowl. He also shoots down the idea that this new Bat-tale will have to tie in with any wider DECU framework, which, given the heavily mixed reactions to the crossovers, seems smart right now.

Finally, when can we actually expect to see the movie itself? "We haven't been dated. I wouldn't commit to this, but we're thinking the movie would probably be for 2021, late spring or summer. Warner Bros. has been incredibly supportive and given me a lot of time and shared the same passion that I do for this story." For more from Reeves, head to The Hollywood Reporter.

    This sounds very promising.

They really don't want to address the burning question (for the core fans) head on. But between Reeves dodge and the indications that a DCU tie-in isn't a priority it's safe to assume that Affleck won't be back (hardly a surprise). I think they're probably waiting until they have the role recast to lay down the final confirmation that Affleck is done, hoping to have a little sugar to offer up with the medicine.

Just give Batman the Poochie treatment. You know, like they should do with Leia in Episode IX.

I also think the reception and level of success of the upcoming Joker film will determine the direction of The Batman, meaning will it be a stand alone/Elseworld tale as the Joker is seemingly going to be or a little more connected like Shazam! appears to be? Initially, when Matt Reeves was announced as the director the for next Batman film, he said it wouldn't be connected to the DCFU and then walked it back shortly thereafter. So, it wouldn't be surprising if The Batman is in some kind of Elseworld/main continuity limbo.

Personally, I hope Reeves' Batman is an Elseworld tale because I never really like the Snyder-verse iteration of the character, nor Ayer's version of the Joker and Harley Quinn and so I would prefer a fresh start with Reeves' Batman and rogues gallery.

yeah I've always thought the detective aspect was ignored too much.

DC has staked out 3 releases in 2021:

    -May 21st: Super Pets
    -June 25th: The Batman
    -August 6th: The Suicide Squad

For comparison, since they'll inevitably be matched up in someway (and is relevant for potential genre crowding), the MCU calendar currently sits at Feb 12th, May 7th & Nov 5th. There was a Foxverse film staked out for March supposedly but i think that's safe to say is unlikely after the merger. On Sony's side there's a good chance a Spider-verse film or spinoff will hit that year as well (one assumes December).

Hmm. Thinking The Batman and The Suicide Squad will be "Elseworlds" tales like Joker, but I could be wrong.

And just so there's no confusion, Affleck statement here confirms that he's not going to be coming up, verifying what the trades were reporting alongside the release dates. Also, it became more evident that Gunn will be directing The Suicide Squad, in addition to writing it, and it does sound like it's going to essentially be a soft relaunch. I'm... excited, for both. I've been psyched for Reeves' take on a noir-detective Batman, and I'm curious to see who they cast. I'm also pretty psyched by Gunn being given the keys to Suicide Squad and told to essentially do whatever the hell he wants.

I was presently surprised with Affleck, Leto, and Robbie. And in SS I was happy the Bat and the Joker weren’t overused.

I would prefer no reboots. The DCEU shouldn’t apologize for WB’s screwups. And in the MCU. I can think of two recasting: the Hulk and Thanos, and as Thanos has no dialogue in Avengers, no real problem.

If The Batman is a flashback then we don’t have a rebooted or Elseworld Batman.

i keep reading that WB is treating this next phase of DC movies as filmmaker focused on a distinct style and not trying to layer in a universe. They gave Snyder a lot of leeway at least for BvS and then circumstances had him handled differently on Justice League. Aquaman and Wonder Woman have their own style but don't really contradict the groundwork in MoS/BvS/Justice League. So I can't see anything coming out that explicitly says it's not a part of the DCEU. Well, maybe aside from the Joker movie but it's the Joker.

With James Gunn directing Suicide Squad, Dave Bautista would be perfect as Bane (if he makes an appearance).

I'm happy to hear that this Batman stuff has been resolved, and there will finally be a film. I appreciate Affleck's work as Bruce, it was steady and solid - never felt crucial in the way Cavill and Gal do to this "universe," or whatever we're calling it in current state. Affleck's strength, in my opinion, is in the director's chair - I hope he sticks with DC in that capacity, because he's capable of fantastic stuff.

I think we can do a lot better with the character, though - I certainly never saw Affleck approaching the bar set by Christian Bale, or even Michael Keaton. While it sounds like it'll be a younger casting, an opportunity for Jon Hamm to take the mantle is worth celebrating. Jon Hamm 2021.

Honestly, The Lone Ranger aside, I'd be interested in at least seeing what Armie Hammer could do. Or Oscar Issac.
