This movie was filmed by Steven in the summer of 2010 in England.

It will be released 5 days after the Tin Tin movie, on December 28, 2011.

Here's the wikipedia article on it, and an extraordinary project it is:

    Steven Spielberg's War Horse

This marks the 7th project Spielberg has directed within a WW II timeframe. The others:

    1941
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    Empire of the Sun
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
    Saving Private Ryan
    Schindler's List

I don't think I can sit through another Spielberg war film, not to say that they aren't well made, but the man has a blatant fetish for the military and victory through battle.

Drac, while there may be well be battles in the film, it's mainly about a boy and his horse. The wikipedia article in the opening post has all the details.

I don't think Spielberg quite so much has a fetish for the military and victorious battles as he has a fetish for drama and conflict. For a director, few scenarios offer greater opportunity for rich dramatic conflict than a war story.

Incidentally, there's an error in my first post. This is NOT Spielberg's 7th WWII film. (I'm a little sleepy tonight, ok?)

War Horse is set in World War I.

This sounds like more of a return to form for the old master than Tintin.

He's assembled a really terrific cast of British talent for this, so I'm really hoping it turns out well. Either way, this will be a major Oscar player.

Color me flabbergasted. This sounds amazing:

From director Steven Spielberg comes ?War Horse,? an epic adventure for audiences of all ages. Set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, ?War Horse? begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets?British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter?before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man?s Land. The First World War is experienced through the journey of this horse?an odyssey of joy and sorrow, passionate friendship and high adventure. ?War Horse? is one of the great stories of friendship and war?a successful book, it was turned into a hugely successful international theatrical hit that is arriving on Broadway next year. It now comes to screen in an epic adaptation by one of the great directors in film history.

Yes, John Williams - who turned 80 years old in February - is the composer for War Horse. The score is being recorded this month.

WWI is rather under represented in the movies, I think. This may be interesting.

Obviously at this point there is no trailer for the Spielberg film.

But there IS some video of the stage show that Spielberg saw which is one of the reasons he decided to adapt it to the big screen.

The live theatre version, which uses hand-spring puppets, has been very successful on the London stage, and it's coming to Broadway.

    Take a look:

    And another look, different presentation:

Those puppets are amazingly lifelike. I'd love to see the stage show if and when it comes to my neck o' the woods.

It's almost inevitable, if it's a hit on Broadway, that there will be a roadshow version.

Kaminski's cinematography looks splendiferous, I'll say that much.

It is, isn't it? With the exception of such films as GALLIPOLI, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, SERGEANT YORK, THE BLUE MAX
and, of course, HELL'S ANGELS, there are relatively few major WWI films in the common market (you could throw in
    THE AFRICAN QUEEN too, technically).

Due to the CGI available now, there has been some interest shown, by a number of people, in producing a film based on
    the naval battle of Jutland.

(A Very Long Engagement is a very good WWI film, d. Jeunet of Amelie fame.)

War Horse looks wonderful! I'm completely sold. But now, after watching that trailer with Spanish subtitles and inter-titles, I want to see the movie in Spanish! (Why not, it works for the SW prequels. :D )

This has to be encouraging to Mr. Spielberg. Makes his film title even better known. 5 Tonys, including best drama and direction, is nothing to snort at.

Top critics on rotten tomatoes give it 82% fresh, the overall is 77%.
The audience rating for the film on R.T. is also 77%.

It's made 51 million dolars in 11 days, almost all of that in the U.S.
It's overseas release has barely started.

The budget was relatively modest for a Spielberg film, just below 70 million,
so it doesn't have to gross a huge amount of money to go into profit.

It's gotten 17 nominations so far for various awards, but it's early in the awards season.
It's gotten Golden Globe nominations for Best Drama and Best Score for John Williams.

    War Horse nominations

Anyone seen it, liked it, loved it, hated it, whatever?

I thought it was great, Spielberg's best in years, same with Williams and his amazing score. The acting was pretty good and the cinematography and effects were outstanding. It helps that I saw Tintin only three days prior to seeing this so I was already in full Spielberg mode.

Having seen a good amount of the heavy-hitters of 2011 I can safely say this is probably going to win best picture a bunch.

I've mentioned elsewhere that I love this thing, and it's Spielberg's best since A.I.

But a lot of critics seem to be sooking about it being "sentimental" and "manipulative." I'm guessing that it'll get nominated for a fair share of awards, but it's doubtful, I would think, that it'll win anything major. Despite the fact that it completely and utterly should.

This is terrible. The Chinese are already bootlegging copies of "War Horse."

The Chinese bootleg everything. You might as well rage against a river for flowing, or the sun for rising.
