Upon examining the dead children in the temple Yoda states to Obi-Wan, "The boy you trained, gone is he, consumed by Darth Vader." This posit was premature though considering that Darth Vader, as were all familar with, is not conflicted at any rate. However Anakin clearly was, as is demonstrated when kneeling both before Palpatine, and again after killing the separatists on Mustafar. In addition, during the duel (as stated in the novel) Anakin's conflict surfaces again when he tells Obi-Wan in so many words he DOES NOT want to kill him shortly before the climatic end and subsequent immolation.

So contrary to what Yoda says earlier, Vader's Nooooo!!!! is really the juncture where Anakin Skywalker as we know him truly dies, and Darth Vader as we know him totally consumes him. When the Emperor tells Anakin he was responsible for Padme's death his motives are transparent. He knows that this will be the blow that pushes Anakin ALL the way to the darkside, erasing any shred of humanity he has left, and ridding him of any previous attachments save Palpatine. Darth Vader is absolute evil, without conscience, and has NO internal conflict. Anakin hasn't reaced this point yet until donning the suit, hence the name of the scene: "The birth of Darth Vader." Before the suit, Anakin was a Sith most definately, but not Darth Vader. What say you?

I have to disagree. Luke stated as much 23 years later:

"Search your feelings, father. You can't do this. I feel the conflict within you. Let go of your hate."

He never is "un-conflicted", He never gets to a point where he doesn't want to kill Palpatine. He becomes "Darth Vader" the moment he was annointed as such by Sidious. His decision to bow and call Sidious "Master", conflict and all, was the point where he became Vader. My opinion would be you may be reading a little too much into it.

Honestly, he IS Darth Vader. Maybe it seems to weird to see him as the Jedi Anakin responding to that name but he was officially Lord Vader once Sidious named him (coronated him?)

I am still one of those SW fans that thought the movie needed more of the "Man in the Iron Breath Mask"(lol) but it stands as what it is and has improved alot in my eyes with multiple viewings. The movie works on many levels and we knew we were going to see his fall and his rise as Darth Vader.

Even if Anakin had a plan to kill Palpatine after he saved Padmè, he still would've had a hand in killing Mace, he still would've been responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Jedi, and he would still be a Sith Lord. He took his last step into darkness when he chose Palpatine over The Jedi Order. After that he was completely, as Yoda would say, an agent of evil.

Yeah and that Obiwan realized there is NO hope for him when he said "Then, you are lost". POWERFUL moment right there. Obiwan NEVER believed he could turn back....NEVER. Which is just tragic but luckily he did redeem himself.

i think he was vader, not only in title, but in spirit. thats why padme gets so upset. also, i gotta say, the anakin-vader was pretty cool, even if it only lasted for like, what, a half day?

another thing, anakin really seemed to be sidious' apprentice when he suggested that he lead the attack on general grievous, i thought. anakin seemed to be taking sidious' advice over the council at that point, i was really surprised, although in some ways the council was also abondoning anakin a bit too, maybe.

That final scream was superfluous. After helping to kill Mace, there are three people he trusts: Palpatine, Obi-Wan (for whom he holds out hope that he was not involved in the "revolt,") and Padme. On Mustafar, he becomes convinced that the latter two are plotting against him, and even goes to the extent of attacking his own wife and accusing her of bringing Obi-Wan to kill him. That should spell out already that he is lost, and has no one left to trust but Palpatine. For him to be asking about Padme's welfare, especially after she has laid down the law--saying she will be no part of what he is doing now--is distinctly out of character for him, given the rest of his behavior. He attempts to Force strangle her, which signifies an intent to kill. Period.

That last scene only needed to do one thing: show Vader as the visual icon we all know. The Duel is the major emotional and action climax of the film; you don't have pivotal character moments after that, you only have plot resolution. The ending of Episode I didn't alter any characters, merely showed them in the positions they had attained already: Palpatine the Chancellor, Padme the activist, Obi-Wan the new mentor to Anakin, Anakin as his apprentice. Episode II's closing dialogue only needed establish that the Jedi would be scrutinizing the Senate's activities--something already set up by Dooku's dialogue with Obi-Wan. Episode IV closing dialogue was just the reunion of the heroes, and Episode V's simply set up their intentions to rescue Han. Vader's final dialogue doesn't lead to anything, you don't see any emotional consequences, the scene is merely truncated after he speaks. Nothing happens afterward that wouldn't have happened anyway. There is no measurable behavior that shows that in that scene--and not before--Anakin completely shuts himself off. That scene should have been more like the scene that followed it: wrapping things up. The plot, and all major character changes, are over until Episode IV.

We've all heard the saying, "The clothes make the man." Anakin becoming Darth Vader is an unconventionally fantastic example of this old cliche.

i think anakin accuses obi-wan of turning padme against her, not padme turning on her own. he was confused when he attacked padme, thats why he stopped, i would say.

padme doesnt just trust obi-wan right away, she puts the pieces together on her own. after all that though, she still loves anakin and anakin still loves padme, i think, and only death would end that kind of love. when he finds out that she is dead, he blames himself and he should. that final monster movie style "nooooooooo!" says to me that the universe is gonna suffer for the loss of padme.

I think he became Vader when the Force spoke to Sidious and gave Anakin the name Vader. However, there was still some Anakin left in him at that point. It wasn't until he donned the suit and learned of Padmé's death that the part of him that was Anakin was repressed so fully that he truly became Vader.

Was he Darth Vader when he fought Obi-Wan? Yes and No. He was walking on the sharp edge of a knife. Sadly, Anakin fell. He lost himself to the darkness.

Exactly - how can anyone argue with that?

It doesn't matter how consumed by the Dark Side you consider him to be, or how much good there may be left in him - he becomes Darth Vader when he officially becomes a Sith.
    Period.
By definition, he is Darth Vader.

Before the end of the battle with Obi-Wan and Anakin, I believe he was Vader and Anakin. Vader to Palpatine, Anakin to Padme. And then all of a sudden, his name no longer had any meaning to him. He became Darth Vader completely.

You all must admit he was a pretty strange Sith.

Compare him to Darth Maul. Maul is pure hate, I don't see conflict in him. He just wants to kill Jedi and reveal himself. His eyes are always yellow.

Anakin is conflicted, even as Vader. He never was a real Sith, except in Episode 4 and 5 (at the end of ESB, he becomes conflicted again.).

The only times I feel he is pure Sith in Episode 3 are :

    - When he kills the separatists
    - When he is burning and shooting at Obi-Wan "I HATE YOU!!!"

The clear and unequivocal answer is: Yes he was. Sidious refers to him as such, his actions are consistent with a Sith Lord's, etc. From the moment he disarms Mace Windu, he's Lord Vader.

As far as i'm concerned, a sith is a sith, no matter how conflicted he his, until he decides not turn from the darkness.
