I don't remember if he was. I know he is in the DVD release though.

No. He was added as a nod to all of the fans of Mr. Fett.

I like the fact that he was added so that he can be in all three OT movies.

But why have him in all three OT movies if he has no useful role to play?

(Except nodding to the camera that is[face_plain])

    Because he's cool...

And from a saga standpoint it sort of establishes that there is a connection between him and Jabba. Which explains why Boba stays at Jabba's palace after having delivered Han there in ROTJ.

I believe he was always in that scene, but that scene, though filmed for the 1977 release was not added to the film until the special edition VHS release, and then the DVD release. The original scene had Han talking to some fat guy. Jabba was CGI'd over him. That's how you missed him.

I respectfully disagree, Fett was not always in the scene. He has been CGI'd in the same as Jabba. Some LFL guy (I forget his name) even got dressed up to play him especially for the SE.

    Sanctuary Moon is correct.

Fett wasn't even an itch in Lucas' pants in 1977.

Well, considering the Holiday Special came out in 1978, and the writing of ESB had probably begun in 1977, Boba Fett was very much an itch in Lucas' pants at that time.

But I see your point and assume you meant to say 1975 or so, which would be the time the scene was originally shot.

Just felt like being difficult and argue a little :p

OBI-BEN-KENOBI, Fett was added when the scene was first put back into ANH - for the 1997 SE.

Fett is there to show us that either Jango is still alive, or Boba's all grown up and became a bounty hunter too. Also I think Jabba should have a scene in ESB: deluxe edition. Fett could be shown landing on tatooine presenting his gift to vile ganster.

    That sounds reasonable. No?

Nah, that would mess with the pacing of the film, just like the whole "Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival" fiasco.:p

The shroud of mystery surrounding Jabba has already been spoilt for new viewers by his inclusion in TPM & ANH. To have him in ESB as well would be Jabba overkill, IMO.

I do not give credence to this "Holiday Special" that you speak of, due to the fact that it's very existence filled me with night terrors for many years after it first blighted the land ;)

I've never liked the fact that he was added. I would have been fine with it if he had just been in the background, but the whole turning and looking at the camera thing was just overkill. Never break the 4th wall!!!!

Fett had 5 new shots total in the SE's:

-The wideshot of Jabba "why'd you fry poor Greedo?" on the right of screen, comped into the existing Jabba footage.
-Walking behind Jabba and looking at the audience (why making a lot fo strange sound FX) at the end of the Jabba scene.
-Walking across screen and looking at the audience again during Jedi Rocks.
-Hanging out with the new dancer chicks.
-Same shot above, with him leaving them.

Yep,he wasn't in that scene when it was originally filmed. Don Bies (same guy who operates R2 in the prequels) put on the suit to play him for the '97 SE. :)

Yeah, the general consensus has it right. The original shots of the meeting with Han and Jabba were played out WITHOUT Boba Fett and with Jabba being a fat irishman-gangster. Lucas cut it originally because he felt it slowed down the pacing of the film too much at that point. It was reinserted in 1997 and Fett was CGI'd into the scene to show the relationship that Fett has with Jabba (that being that Fett was a bounty hunter, but held a special place of respect for his highest-paying customer; Jabba the Hutt). That's the same reason why he was hanging at Jabba's palace in ROTJ (but the SE crap of him flirting with the dancing girls is just a travesty).

    >>Lucas cut it originally because he felt it slowed down the pacing of the film too much<<

Actually he only cut it because they couldn't pull off the special effect where they planned to superimpose a stop-motion creature over the irish actor stand-in.

    /\/\/\/\/\

News to me. I was always under the impression that Jabba was only decided to be a puppet when he was writing/creating ROTJ and originally intended him to be the irish-ganster we never see (unless you've already seen the footage elsewhere).

No, Jabba was always supposed to be a creature. I don't believe his slugness was created until ROTJ, however. I think he was supposed to be hairy in ANH.

Yeah, there's a storyboard that shows the original Jabba creature design as a large, two legged, furry thing (i think it even had Salcious B. Crumb with him too) and how the design would overlap with the human stand-in.

If you can find a copy of "From Star Wars to Jedi" they go into this.
