    In TPM, did Qui-Gon's Mind trick actually work on Boss Nass? He didn't seem to react the same as the Stormtrooper in ANH (Repating back the sentances in a slightly odd way) ?

    I don't believe that the mind trick had any effect, because Boss Nass did not like humans, and by providing Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan with a bongo, it was a way to get rid of them quickly. Nass did not trust any humans at that point, and I don't believe that he was weak-minded enough to fall for the mind trick.

    I think we're supposed to believe it did, but I like the idea that Nass was simply playing along only to give the Jedi a horrible deal with the Bongo.

    See this is what I thought yesterday whilst watching it. Boss Nass thought that the 'mechannics' was just a trick to try and draw out the Gungans, and so gave them a transport through the planet core, where he assumed they would be killed, either by the wildlife or just getting lost, etc

    With Jar Jar, he was already set to be executed, so why not just send them off with a doomed party? Far easier, and less messy.

    A leader would surely not be so susceptible to Jedi Mind Tricks

    Qui-Gon's mind tricks did work, because he saved Jar-Jar from being "puuuunished" using one. It's just that mind-tricking someone into speeding you on your way doesn't preclude them from speeding you on your way to what they hope is a death trap. :)

    I am not sure really if a mind trick was involved as to Jar Jar. Qui-Gon played on Gungan culture by saying that Jar Jar owed him a "Life Debt". Based upon the Gungan belief system, Boss Nass knew that Jar Jar owed Qui-Gon his servitude which the Gungans are required to honor. Pointing out to Boss Nass that Jar Jar is now bound to him, doesn't necessarily require a mind trick.

    I do think that Qui-Gon helped Boss Nass speed them "on their way".

    Qui-Qon's hand moves in the jedi way as he says "your gods demand..." that Jar-Jar go with them. It's a wide shot, so it's easy to miss. One of the many cool small parts of Star Wars. :cool:

    If the mind trick had worked, wouldn't have Boss Nass have repeated exactly what Qui-Gon had said? This is why I believe that the trick didn't convince Nass, but the explanation of the "Life Debt" and the Gungan honor system helped Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Jar Jar out instead.

    When a Force-user influences the mind of another being, that being does not necessarily repeat precisely the identical sentence that the Force-user speaks to activate the mind trick.

    In addition, I believe Boss Nass, with his hatred-mongering and bigotry, was clearly weak-minded.

    Not that I HATE Boss Nass, or anything. That would be...silly. 8-}

    No, Nass just wanted the Jedi out of Otah Gunga and the only way to do that was to provide them the Bongo.

    Then how come he didn't give them the bongo until after the mind trick? [face_thinking]
