Was Darth Vader physically and spiritually capable of laughter? Vader *did* have a twisted sense of humor in the Original Trilogy (wry remarks like "I find your lack of faith disturbing" as he chokes an Imperial officer), and while I don't expect him to be capable of yukking it up after all he had been through as Anakin Skywalker, it's worth noting that we never hear Vader emit even *evil* laughter (the kind favored by Palpatine) at any point of the Original Trilogy. Hearing Vader laugh probably would ruin some his mystique (even if it's an evil laugh), but it makes me wonder if he was capable of laughter at all.

I think he's probably emotionally capable of laughter, if something amuses him.

But with his breathing problems, I don't know if he could actually work up the wind to do it.

Maybe he needs to hold down the red button on his chest if he wants to laugh. :p

    Rick McCallum loves you!

Does Anakin ever laugh in Ep 1 or 2?

Anakin laughs nervously in the beginning of Ep. 2 before he meets Padme. ;) :p
Oh, and a few other times as well. So, yes. But when he's Darth Vader? Nope, doesn't laugh.

Anakin also laughed quite heartily while frolicking with Padme on Naboo in ATTACK OF THE CLONES. He also had a sort of maniacal laugh (which almost would have suited Vader) when he sent that airspeeder into a nosedive with Obi-Wan on Coruscant.

Palpatine laughs his evil laugh in RotJ, I am sure Vader could too. He and Veers probly had a good laugh over poor Ozzel that night.

Don't forget when he laughed at the awful joke he made when him and Padme were leaving Coruscant.
    "Don't worry, we have Artoo"
Then Padme laughs just to be polite.

I don't know, but if I were permanently behind a mask I could not resist mouthing obscenities at people I hated . . . and my boss. I reckon Vader must have mouthed a few to Tarkin every time he had a dig at Jedis.

He probably could but I don't think he hung around with anyone amusing to have anything to laugh about anyway. Tarkin, the Emperor... not what you would consider highly enjoyable company... ;)

I always noticed this, and I think its one of the characteristics that completely seperate Vader and Palpatine/Sideous.

Palpatine: He gets enjoyment out of his evil acts. He revels in his evil.

Vader: Doesn't experience joy. He only hates, and even killing gives him no pleasure. (I mean in the OT)

Also note, none of Palpatine's other apprentices have lagued, or even cracked so much as a smile. Maul was full of rage, and Dooku always had a grave tone to his voice.

    Dooku smiled... kind of.

Jango ALMOST got a grin for shooting Coleman Trebor and he has the mocking cheeser against Obi-Wan.

I don't know, I can see Vader first thing in the morning, sitting in his meditation chamber, reading the funnies, drinking coffee...

"Har, har, haa! Oh, that wacky Marmaduke! Ho, ho, ho!"

Of course, he makes absolutely sure no one can overhear him. Hard to strike fear into the hearts of your men when they all know you chuckle at the crazy antics of the Family Circus and Beetle Bailey...
