Was Jabba smoking opium?

In the scenes in Jabba's den and also on the barge, was Jabba smoking opium or some other opiate, or was it shisha?

 

It was a water pipe.

 

...yeah, but what was he smoking through the water pipe?

 

Hot boiling water, what you saw was the steam. Interesting effect.

 

I could be wrong, but doesn't the EU give it a name like Oppah or oopahh or something? I'm not sure what I'm thinking of...

I thought that the Hutts smokes a kind of spice that was a mild intoxicant. Mild for them anyway.

 

Jabba most likely obtained his Spice from his smugglers.

He was definitely high on something. I also notice his little friend, the one who laughed all the time, i think he was on something as well..

 

That would be Salacious B. Crumb, and as someone said above whatever it was gave him the giggles. Jabba, on the other hand, just gets really mellow.

One of my favorite all time SW characters, heh. There was really no point to putting him into those scenes (other than to inject humor) because the scene would have worked out just as well if he wasnt in them. But Im glad GL put him in, heh.

eht13 - good observation on jabba, he`s getting mellow as you said, so we can assume he is an experienced smoker.

 

I always thought he was smoking some sort of Weed.

 

I think he was smoking a bunch of midichlorians.

 

Maybe that's why he's so fat- he smokes then he gets the munchies.
