Was the Long-snoot spy (Garindan) on Tattoine in ANH human or alien?

I have always wondered about this, and wanted to ask anyone who had more knowledge of the EU than I do if they knew the answer:

This Long-snooted spy had goggles and an elephant-like trunk; was he an alien, and did his race have that elephant trunk as a nose, or was he a human with a mask on?

I will state the obvious here, so there's no confusion - Obviously this role was played by an actor who wore a mask, but I was wondering if this guy was an alien in the context of the fictitious SW universe.

Good question, Ive wondered about that creature to, if I had to guess Id say alien.

 

Yes he was an alien, his species are called the Kubaz.

 

The EU has the guy being from a race of long-snooted aliens called Kubaz. The Kubaz, btw, are apparently galaxy-renowned chefs. They cook bugs and make delicacies out of them...which makes sense, since the Kubaz look like anteaters.

Plus listen to the way the guy talks! I don't think I could make my human voice box make those noises.

Why do you think Garindan wears those goggles? To keep out sand or UV rays? Or are they just the shades ju jour among his people?

He does look impressive. I have always wonder about him myself. What he does exactly might be explained in Episode 3.

 

I wouldn't hold you breath Ninja Guyden. It's obvious what his role is in ANH. He's an informant for the Empire. Look to the EU for better explanation of him and his species.

This long-snooted informant shadowed Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi as they made their way from the Mos Eisley Cantina to Docking Bay 94. The dark cloaked snitch used his comlink to call the Imperial authorities, and directed a squad of desert stormtroopers to the fugitives.

Expanded Universe
Garindan is a Kubaz spy who works for the highest bidder -- which included the Empire and Jabba the Hutt. Garindan is nicknamed "Long Snoot," for his long, green-black elephantine trunk. Garindan was constantly searching for information about Jabba the Hutt. One of his sources was Labria, whom he personally despised. Garindan usually carries little more than a hand-held comlink and a hold-out blaster. A supposed relative of Garindan, Lorindan, worked as a rancor keeper for Jabba the Hutt.
