"We have to give those fighters more time. Concentrate all fire on that super star destroyer" -Ackbar-

To continue my train of thought from that "a-wing thread" How did blowing up the Executor buy the fighters inside the Death Star more time? I don't see why it mattered either way.

Errant-Venture, if you are reading this please let me know.

The Imperials may have known some Rebel fighters entered the Death Star. So by attacking the Executor, Ackbar hoped to divert attention away from the Death Star and give the fighters more time to operate relatively uninhibited.

As Bib said, when Admiral Ackbar gave the order to concentrate all firepower on the SSD, it was an attempt to divert Imperial fighters from following the Rebels into the death star. While the Imps. had more ships and fighters on their side, their fighters also lacked torps and shields which the Rebel pilots used to their utmost advantage. The odds of successfully navigating the death star interior with enemy fighters on your tails are pretty low, so the Ackbar guessed that he can expand the Rebel's chances of success. For every Imperial pilot that the Rebels destroyed after that command, or for every Imperial pilot ordered to stay in the battle proper, reduced the amount of fighters on Lando's tail.

The Imperials thought the death star was invincible, yet they knew that the Executor was not, so they concentrated their defense there.

They also shot it down because it looked real perty when slammed into the side of the Death Star.
