hey I'm a noob here and I was wondering if there were any posts discussing the accent of Wedge Antilles. (if not then I have one)

Although the differences between ANH and ESB can be explained by maturation/growth/etc over three years, where does the British accent come from in ROTJ? I know Denis Lawson is from the UK, but the accompanying accent only comes through in ROTJ.

    Any thoughts/comments/redirections?

I noticed that to. IIRC, I read somewhere that Lucas told the actors portraying the rebel pilots in ANH to try to speak without an English accent.

Wedge has the interesting habit of changing his voice/appearance in each movie yet remaining the same actor in all three :p

Yeah, there's a pretty big difference in his accent from ESB to RotJ. He has fewer samples in ESB, but it seems to sound more 'American' than his RotJ one.

You know, I'd never really noticed. I guess I'd have to recall some of this ESB and RotJ lines to compare. I thought it was a bit silly to have him fake an accent in the first place. I get the British = evil controlling people thing, but if Obi-Wan of all people can be British, why can't Wedge?

I don't even know what Lawson's real accent sounds like. I'm assuming it sounds something like Ewan's :p

I can't say I noticed any difference either. Dammit, it's gonna be like the force slugs isn't it, I'm gonna notice it all the time now aren't I? :p

Yup. I can't even look at that Wampa scene without cringing. Thanks JC! ;)

Close, if the accent he has in the second episode of Horatio Hornblower is anything to go by, and I think it's as good as anything. The character he plays doesn't have a specific nationality in the original book, and Denis plays the character with a noticeable, but not overdone, Scottish accent. That's probably his real voice right there.

But no one here knows what I'm talking about, so meh...

Well I've heard Ewan's mum and since she's Denis's sister, I'll assume they're accents are about the same. It's not an extreme accent, like Glaswegians have, but it's noticeably Scottish nonetheless.

Denis reads the the audiobook of Heir to the Empire, and it's amazing how much he sounds like Ewan. I can only assume that that's his 'own voice'.

On similar lines, the audiobooks of the Jedi Academy Trilogy and Shadows of the Empire (but I can't remember which I'm afraid) are both read by Anthony Heald and suddenly the character of Wedge has this fantastic Scottish accent! As a guess I'd say he's met Denis but can't remember his part from the movies ;)

Hmmm, I always figured that it wasn't the British=Evil thing that had Lucas suggest Denis change the accent; I figured it was more in making the Rebels into the "All-American Good Guys" that we see in war movies, almost like "Good ol' Americans" in planes kicking ass wherever they go. You know, that sort of thing. :p

Yeah I think it was Kershner who wanted the rebels=american, Imperial=british accent. I suppose that idea was dropped for ROTJ, since we had Rebels with accents and Imperials without them.

Well, no one is without some kind of accent :p

I know the whole purposing behind it, but still, doesn't it seem abit negated by the fact that Obi-Wan Kenobi himself has a British accent??

I haven't heard the audio book of Heir to the Empire. Now I'm curious :p

Perhaps the distinction was meant only for the military folks? Kenobi being a Knight- Knights give the impression of middle ages and british accents I suppose.

Kind of like that scene where they blow up Alderaan. Leia can't figure out where she's from:

BRITAIN: Governor Tarkin, I should have expected to find you holding Vader's leash. I recognized your foul stench when I was brought on board.

AMERICA: No! Alderaan is peaceful. We have no weapons. You can't possibly...

    BRITAIN: Dantooine. They're on Dantooine.

    AMERICA: What?!!

Or how about formal and dress-down Amidala?

Denis and Ewan are from the same place-Creiff,Perth,north of Scotland.Denis is Ewan's favorite uncle. That accent is the first thing that attracted me to Wedge, besides his personality and courage.
