I think I tend to do most of my rewriting in my head before it ends up on a document, especially if it takes time to type it out on a laptop or my phone. I still run through and edit before I post, but the time up to that can be the period where I decide the main points of my post.

That and I tend to isolate on storylines where what other people do tends to have minimal effect unless I'm in a combo with someone. Then it's a collaboration.

I can relate to doing a lot of it in my head too. If I’m driving a lot or sitting in carpool line, I’ll work out what I want to do in a post.

This might be difficult, but think about it and answer!

What advice do you wish someone had given you when you were a new player?

I would’ve liked someone to say that this is a hobby, and a labor of love. We invest so much into our characters and their stories. But, I’d like them to know it’s one of the best things they can participate in. Our community is safe and caring.

I wish I had been told to not invest myself fully into a single character, or rather, to not end up treating the character as a accidental self-insert. It's pretty easy to fall into the trap if you spend a substantial amount of time roleplaying a single person. To compound on this, when you're starting out, it can come as quite a shock to find that if your character continues to make terrible decisions, it can result in a character death, which if you're not careful, can make you, the player, feel as if you're being personally attacked by the other players/GM when that was actually the least of their intentions.

I'd recommend any new player to reach out to their GM's, one, to let them know what your general plans for your character are, and two, if there's anything you don't want to do. It'll make the story more enjoyable for everyone involved

For a personal example of this, I can look back at my deceased character named Vyatoris. I laugh at it now, but I remember at the time wanting to outright quit the forums after he was killed off by other player characters. To me, it was abrupt, unexpected, and truthfully, it felt pretty personally insulting. Looking back, he totally deserved it, being the two-timing prick that he was, but I was so used to the idea that a player's character couldn't die without their express consent that it was a complete shock. Through a series of back and forth conversations, everything got smoothed over and I came to terms with the fact that not only was Vyatoris proudly waving every sort of death flag imaginable, it actually made for an interesting story beat.

Through working with the GM, @Sinrebirth and I ended up writing a really touching send off the my character, which was vastly appreciated. (Also some of my best writing, in my honest opinion :p)

Thank you @Silvertough! That’s great advice, and I couldn’t agree more on keeping a dialogue with your GM.

    Where do you write?

I really don’t have a favorite place, in fact I’ve worked on posts sitting in the car and on planes. For me, being able to do it anywhere makes me happy.

Do you have to be in a specific or favorite place to write?

I mostly write in my head, as I'm thinking about the next post. Then, of course, I sit down at my desk to type it up. I try to wait to post to the next day, so that I can review and make tweaks, but sometimes I'm in a rush so, boom! Up it goes. Fanfiction is a bit easier, I almost never start posting until the first draft of the whole story is completely finished.

I also like to play the scene out in my head prior to writing. It really helps me to visualize things - it also feels easier to work through any problems that may arise.

In terms of an actual place to write, as long as I'm in the proper headspace and have a device with a keyboard (laptop, desktop, etc.), I should be good to go. I don't think I could ever craft an entire post on my phone. Some people do that routinely, and more power to them, but I think that would drive me up the wall. :p

If I am completely honest, I only learnt this when I started playing D&D properly.
I had no idea everyone here was pming each other behind the scenes here, only realised that a couple of years back and then wasn't brave enough to do it.
.... and if I am really really honest, I'm still not brave enough to do that most of the time.
I only managed to properly do it for Irryn in Genesis Gate, so I was really bummed when that went on hiatus.

I will echo the chorus in saying that I tend to do a lot of my initial writing in my head. Not just brainstorming, but also writing entire scenes or discussions in my mind, and composing key phrases that I hope to include. That sort of writing can take place anywhere. When I'm on a walk or in the shower, for example. I tend to describe that process as letting stories "marinate" in my mind. Sometimes that marination process can take weeks, months, or even years.

In terms of physical spaces, my most common place to write is laying on my bed in my room. I just find it super comfortable whether I am writing by pen and paper or with my laptop. Though I have been known to write by pen and paper on the living room sofa or on my laptop at the kitchen counter as well. Much of my physical writing definitely tends to take place at home, however, and I prefer to write in a relatively quiet environment where other people really can't distract me from focusing on the story I am trying to put into words. I will occasionally listen to music to help set the mood for whatever I am writing. So my muse is as ever a fickle creature.

I definitely like music, or I’ll have a TV program on that I’ve seen before, turned down low, just some background noise.

There is definitely a dog in my lap or laying on my legs, if I’m at home.

Who inspired you to get into role playing, or writing?

Hmm... it was probably my cousin who inspired me the most. He introduced me to the concept way back in high school. We used to spend our evenings roleplaying over AIM when dial-up was still a thing, so you can imagine how frustrating that must've been to other members of our households. At the time, we only did one-liners and used asterisks for actions. Eventually, he pointed me to a forum he set up with his friend, who was looking for players in a play-by-post roleplay based on an AU version of Star Wars. I signed up to play Han Solo and fell in love with the concept. After spending years on AIM, I transitioned to writing full-length posts fairly quickly. I eventually discovered the roleplaying section of the JC, and the rest is history.

If I recall, my first game here was one of the Balance of Power installments. If that doesn't show my age, I'm not sure what will... LOL! :p

Myself. :p Seriously, before I knew what fan fiction was, I was firing up Microsoft Word on my grandparents’ computer as a kid and writing my own stories about Rocket Power, Donkey Kong Country, and Backyard Baseball. I also wrote some original stories, a couple of which my grandmother emailed to my aunt, who added some clip art to them and printed them out for me. I still have a couple copies around here.

As for how I found this place, someone on the GameFAQs message boards started a Star Wars RPG over there, and then eventually directed me here. And the rest is history!

Your cousin sounds so cool @HanSolo29, and OMG AIM seems like a lifetime ago. The old EUC AIM chats were so much fun back then.

@Reynar_Tedros did you have DK Konga and Jungle Beat with the bongo controller? We made up Mario and DK stories, and now I wish we had typed them up.

I used to make up adventure back stories for our dogs. Those would get insanely complicated, but always ended with them being adopted by me so they could retire from a life of crime (eek!) or live peacefully after being crime solving super dogs. :p

But, as for actual role playing, one day my hubs (wanderguard) said, “oh, hey —you’re doing this so make a sheet.” I replied that I was not, obviously I ultimately did. Then spending time reading the work of @Sinrebirth and @HanSolo29 it was hard to resist.

Sadly no, I didn’t even realize those existed until after they were out of circulation. :_| They remade Jungle Beat on the Wii, which doesn’t require the bongo drums, so I’ve had my eye on eBay listings of that one. :p

They’re pretty fun, two of my kids still have theirs. I don’t think they ever play them now because they use other systems, but it’s part of their collections.

Roleplaying wise, I've been playing some form of Tabletop RPG (Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, etc) for what feels like ever. As for doing this *gestures vaguely*, I think I started play-by-post style roleplaying on a different site somewhere around 2013-ish, about a year or two before The Force Awakens released in theaters.

I had just rediscovered my love for Star Wars and had consumed pretty much every form of expanded media at that point. I figured that, if there weren't any movies coming out, I'd make my own stories!

They were bad. Just awful. I'm really glad I went by a different username back then so none of it can be easily dug up :p

I'm hopefully doubly protected as my terrible posts were on a different forum under a different username.

If anyone somehow manages to find them, firstly, rude, and secondly, do me a favor and please pretend you didn't [face_plain]

Haha, not the old starwars dot com boards? If so then you don’t have to worry, those are long gone. I had plenty of posts there. :p

I didn’t know you were an old school role player, Silver! I started late 80’s and then discovered the Aruin Trilogy and played that exclusively for years. I still have my original volumes of the guides. Those were good times!

Triple-ly protected perhaps..? The forum itself wasn't dedicated to Star Wars, it just had a dedicated sub-forum for Star Wars stuff that I frequented. Then I found this place in 2018, and now you're all stuck with me :p

Jeeze.. I haven't heard anyone mention the Aruin Grimoire stuff in years... Never got to play it myself, but I do still enjoy poking around the rulebooks every now and then
