Not IMO, espeically not with Anakin being the poster boy of the Jedi Order.

No, I don't think so. Ewan wasn't too attractive to play Obi-wan either (especially shaven in eps I & II).

According to Carrie Fisher, they were. ;) Carrie once said in an interview that she thought Hayden and Natalie were too beautiful to be her parents.

I don't really understand the question though. Is there some particular reason why Padme and Anakin should have been more unattractive? Would you have preferred it if they looked like Shaggy and Velma? LOL.

I don't think it is unrealistic that they are too attractive. That makes their love for each other more believable. If he was some average looking guy married to this hot girl, you would always question why she stuck with him for all his faults. But after he killed the tuskens, always was whining, and seemed totally awkward around her, the fact that he was a really good looking guy made you think that his looks overshadowed everything.

I hate to break it to everyone but looks play a big role in 2 people getting together, sometimes it overshadows everything else.

I don't necessarily think that they were too attractive.

I hate how people think that Keira Knightly would've been better. She is a man! Natalie was perrrfect.

    Newsflash!
Although there are a few exceptions (Johnny Depp, Sandra Bullock, etc.), good looking people = bad actors.
But sadly, the buisness is now filled with untalented 'pretty' people. From Orlando Bloom to the Olsen twins.

Sadly, Hayden and Natalie were pretty much hired based totally on looks. Lucas now does things like this.

I think Hayden and Natalie's looks kinda ruined the love story plot (as did their hammy acting and some of the writing), I couldn't feel sympathy or anything for either of them. It seemed much more of a shallow relationship than the movies intended.

I have mixed feelings about this. One of the most charming things about the OT was that the main characters were NOT Hollywood-perfect looking people. They were nice-looking, but within a more "normal" or "average" range. They looked like people who might sit next to you in history class, or that you would have a beer with at the local pub. I find extremely good-looking people very off-putting, much more so than extremely unattractive people.

However...I always had a thing for Darth Vader, and I was sure he was this gorgeous hunk under the mask. I had this psychological need for Anakin to be beautiful, and so I was quite taken with Hayden, even though I'd be put off by him in real life. Also, he had to have a matching love interest, hence Natalie.

I have rationalized the surreal beauty of these characters by considering that SW is fantasy, the fact that they are ALIENS even if they are human, and so they don't have to look like real people. But I agree that they are a tad too pretty to have relatively ordinary-looking offspring. Carrie has a point.

Natalie Portman is hot. I've never seen this as a bad thing.

I don't think their looks took away from their characters. If anything, I think the writing didn't live up to the characters. Writing in TPM was okay, AOTC was just bad, and there was some improvement in ROTS. I expected better lines from Anakin and Padme, but it was the writing rather than the delivery that disappointed me. I definately think Portman is a better actor than Christensen, but neither were given a chance to really shine in the dialogue department.

Just because the parents are hot doesn't mean the children will be.

HOLLY COW!!!!!!!!! I am SOOOOOOOO not a Hayden fan, and I think he is kind of revolting with his short hair...BUT OMG HE WAS ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY HOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT IN ROTS!!!! [face_hypnotized] [face_hypnotized] [face_hypnotized] [face_hypnotized] [face_hypnotized]

Okay, back to the ACTUAL question...I thought Anakin was a little too needy in AOTC, and when they were brought out to that "stadium" and she expressed her love to him, I was like, "LIAR!!!!!!!!" That was the worst acting I have ever seen, as for Anakin, he expressed his love for her very well...
In ROTS, I felt Padme was the clingy one. Anakin was off on his little "get evil" expedition and she was all "ANAKIN!!!!! I LOVE YOU!!!!!!" and she was pregnant and that just made it worse.

Conclusion: Anakin, back off in AOTC
Natalie, go to an acting class for "how to express your love" [she did a better job in ROTS]

Just so everyone is clear on the issue, Carrie Fisher is joking. She has stated it several times, it is a joke. Her opinion about their looks is by no means serious.

Well their children on the best looking people, but I don't see a problem with the two of them being attractive. Hayden did a good job with the role (considering how complex it is, and in the context of the scripts.) Natalie was all over the place, but in the end, I'm glad she was Padme.

as much as I enjoy looking at hot actors (hayden is very very attractive) and as a girl I can even appreciate another girl as pretty as natalie, I do think they were definetly to attractive.

It looked as though the two hottest people in the galaxy got together, which isnt a bad thing or anything I guess, it just seems kinda unlikely. It also makes it seem that most of their relationship is based on each others looks and being infatuated with the other person because of that. Unlike Han and Leia's relationship (while both were attractive people, they werent nearly as beautiful as anakin and padme). Han and Leia's relationship was based on long term friendship, commraderie, opposites attract kinda thing going. This witty banter exchange. It was more the persona of the person than how good looking they were (I mean, Han was even temporarily blind at the only time Leia really showed skin, which btw totally sucks for him).

It makes alot of the fans like star wars just because of the actors. I mean lets face it Ewan, Natalie, Liam, Rose Byrne, and the girl that played Aayala has some followers also. all in the same film? Instead of the OT, which didnt have outrageously attractive people. It was more of the story, the drama, the special effects, the relationships, the dialogue etc. I think Ewan was a good fit for Obi-wan (even though he might be to attractive to play a character like that, he pulled off the character so amazingly well, the audience kinda saw him as this a-sexual person, kinda a wise cool monk and mentor).

Natalie fits well because her character was already built up to be extremely beautiful because of ROTJ, she also has to be the reason for Anakins fall...so she probably better look rather alluring.

Its casting Hayden thats the big down fall. I think he's a great actor and it wasnt the acting that was bad. Anakin should have been on par with Luke looks wise. Kinda average, with a good build. Not take your breathe away handsome, but appealing. It should have been his talents and ability, arrogance, and charm that made him the poster boy for the Jedi Order, not the fact he was good looking. It should have been the fact Padme had emotional ties to him, and the fact that he allowed her to be herself and not be so serious that made her fall in love with him more than 'WOW you grew up to be SMOKIN hot!'.

    thats just my opinion, personally

Okay, you got a point. It DID seem like the two hottest people got together in the galaxy. And now that I think about it...why the heck did Anakin think about Padme every night? That wasn't really explained. They barely talked to each other in TPM and all of a sudden he's madly in love with her? The part Padme expresses her love to him is absolutely PATHETIC!!!!

They did develop a realtionship in Menace.
Then Anakin had 10 years to look back on those events and her image with rose tinted glasses. It marked a time of wonder and dreams in his life. He looks back on those times as golden days.

ya but they did barely speak in TPM. they exhanged words here and there...but they didnt have deep meaningful conversations. I mean, the movie makes it A POINT to show that little Anakin was entranced by her LOOKS upon meeting her. (IE the whole 'are you an angel' yada yada stuff).

he thought about her every night for ten years because she was beautiful, not because she had a kick ass personality guys
