I've seen this argument from super anti-EU fans: because of the similar appearance, they believe that the Neimoidian species was intended to be Duros (as first seen in the Cantina). For me, the appearance isn't quite close enough. Duros seem to have more elongated heads, and blueish skin, as opposed to the greenish skin of the Neimoidians. Plus, the hands are completely different. Also, the Neimoidians were definately not originally planned to be based off Duros in the first place (the initial sketches shown them as more of an organic version of the Battle Droids). And I can't remember, but I think the script refers to Neimoidians.
Who cares? It was more their voices sounding like Kato from the Pink Panther or a tragic attempt at a comedic Japanese accent that was meant to be taken seriously. Were they meant to be comedic?
Yes and yes. They were supposed to be the patsies, too, but some people didn't see that. They wanted them to be these evil dudes who were intelligent enough to lead invading armies?
I've heard inconsistant claims of stereotyping when it comes to the Neimoidians. From Chinese, to Thai, to Japanese. If their all the same to them, whose the one stereotyping? From official accounts, I've heard that the voice actors were given instruction to sound like foreigners trying to speak English. Interpret it as you will. Greedo's language is native to South Africa (Quechua). But I've never heard anyone accuse Greedo of stereotyping blacks. Going back to the original topic, it seems that it mainly relates to OOT fans who create their own canon to better establish a connection between the two trilogies (like saying Naboo is really Alderaan). I'm fine with that, but I'm just wondering if there's any factual evidence to the original topic.
Maybe they feel the Neimodian background of "them being an offshoot of Duros" a poor excuse to not have actual Duros in the movie?
Yeah, I know. There's nothing about them being related to Neimoidians in the movies though. Unless I missed something in the super extra special edition.
Essentially, yes. When the original look for the Neimoidians in TPM was dropped (later to be re-used for the Geonosians in AOTC), Lucas simply chose the look of the Neimoidians from stills of the various Cantina aliens from ANH. He chose (what the EU refers to as) Duros.
Just to clarify, the term Neimodian has been used in many sources outside the films, but never mentioned in the film, so by some people's standards, that doesn't count. Still "Cato Neimoidia" is mentioned in the movies.
