Welcome to the Jean Claude Van Damme thread And the Oscar goes to... Getting tired of those snakes? Looking for leadership? Look no further The rhythm is going to get you
You forgot his early villainous role in "No Surrender, No Retreat", which was hilariously MSTed during the recent MST3K live tour.
I voted for Bloodsport and Street Fighter, but for you it was a Tuesday. Even though it's Saturday...
Van Damme was a big movie hero to me growing up, and honestly he's still my favorite martial arts star. He has the best kicks in the history of movies, hands down. Chuck Norris wishes his roundhouses were as beautiful as Van Damme's. The splits gimmick is hilarious, and I'm a big fan of the instant replay gimmick from his prime. The tournament movies are the definitive Van Damme movies to me. That includes Lionheart, which wasn't included in the poll. I find great amusement in Van Damme using his subtlety, versatility, and deep insight into characters to portray twins, which he did in Double Impact, Maximum Risk, and The Replicant. What's better than Van Damme? Two of him! It's unfortunate he didn't get to play Tomax and Xamot in a live action GI Joe movie at that time. As hilarious as it was to have the brunette Belgian play All American blonde Colonel Guile, the fighting video game movie he should have done was Mortal Kombat. Van Damme was the inspiration for the creation of the Mortal Kombat to begin with, and Johnny Cage was based on him. It was the perfect role for Van Damme, and Mortal Kombat was the better movie. Double Team was hilariously bad, whether you're talking about The Island plot where Van Damme humps a bathtub to get back in shape, or the hilarious number of completely out of place sports/basketball references jammed into the banter due to Rodman's presence, but Double Team was the death of Van Damme's prime. Now he exists only as nostalgia and to make fun himself (at least he has a sense of humor about it all), though I admit The Expendables 2, especially the kick, thrilled the heck out of me. Was glad to see him provide one last thrill.
Oh I think you mean double team, silly Sorry I know all his films would not fit and was to lazy to look it up , should have probably had that on there. I added desert heat cause I kinda thought it was good
Van Damme’s prime was a little bit before my time” and I’m not intrigued enough by the “machismo comedy” genre his movies epitomize to bother checking them out. So the only one of his movies I’ve seen remains Street Fighter, simply because of the video game connection. So it wins by default.
You're right, I did mean Double Team. I'll have to fix that in an edit. Desert Heat wasn't bad. It's just so hard to narrow down the list of great Van Damme movies, there are so many of them. I'm glad to see movies like Nowhere to Run, Death Warrant, Legionnaire, and even Knock Off on the list. But, uh, Sudden Death should not be on the list. I hated it even as a kid. Yes, Van Damme taking the ice and saving several shots is just hysterical in retrospect, but it was not a good movie. I'm glad this thread exists for me to make these vapid comments.
I didn't mind sudden death he fights the penguins mascot He also use a fire extinguisher to shoot a nail like a bullet, which I feel has been done a few times now. I think its happens in salt and Bourne legacy having trouble thinking of others I think sudden death is a love letter to the penguins hockey stadium they really utilize it Anyone watch the new kickboxer movies , I thought they were OK but the second one I laughed at his role sorta the original s good but I always just compare it to bloodsport Bloodsport is probably his best film, just unfortunate it was his first film and everything is compared to it I guess in the sense that you could almost say his career started at the top and only gone down hill from there Jean Claude van Johnson the TV show I though was rather entertaining , if only it got another season I'm sure I'll get some hell for this but I'm not a time cop fan in particular I'd rather watch double impact which hey, if your a van dammed fan its a great film IMO now double team may just be me having nostalgia for double impact but I sorta enjoy it , I love me a van damme montage, I liked the island of dead people and you know what I'm going on a limb here but its also a great film about family and friendships Street fighter has some great moments, "you got paid" come on his speech is truly inspirational I guess this film also depends on how much you like the video game as well but that speech , when its over I get ready to go to my boat every time before I remember I don't have one
I think the idea for Sudden Death was probably Die Hard in a Hockey Arena, and you can see the fire extinguisher/improvised weapon being in a Seagal movie like Under Siege, but the script really went off the rails into stupid nonsense. I'm not a Timecop fan either, as it's not really a Van Damme role or a Van Damme movie. It's a generic action movie that he got the part in. There are some okay one liners and they worked in a beautiful but deadly splits but it's just not one of his best. The mullet is beautiful, though. Double Impact is definitely better than Timecop, I consider it one of his best movies. It's definitely his best synergy of martial arts and bullets. I need to watch Van Johnson. I had it in my Amazon queue for months but never got around to it.
The movie JCVD is awesome and should be watched by anyone who vaguely considers themselves a Van Damme fan and even by those who don't. Had the Amazon Van Damme TV show on my Amazon list for quite awhile now but maybe with nothing new I'll get to it eventually. Timecop and Universal Solider are definitely the ones that made an impact of my teenage brain as to who he is. But mostly cuz they're sci-fi movies, really. Timecop is the first time I saw a movie with a self-driving car, actually!
Don’t really have a favorite Van Damme film, but if there’s ever a picture of him holding two lion cubs, I could really use that in these trying times?
The Expendables 2. He may not be the star, but he steals every (van) damn scene he is in. His performance in that movie compels you to go marathon his filmography.
@CT-867-5309, have you seen the dtv Universal Soldier sequels he did with John Hyams? They're way better than I was expecting.
