What actually killed Darth Vader?

Force lightning from Palpy? Exhaustion from fighting Luke? Taking off the mask? is it ever clarified?

 

Well, fighting Luke didn't kill him, but it didn't help. Force Lightning is what caused his death. Because of Vader's suit, the Force Lightning practically penetrated his only defense (his suit) and damn near killed him, so since Vader knew he would die, he asked Luke to take off the mask so he could look upon look and die quickly instead of suffer. So all three kind of tie in with eachother, but if it weren't for Vader saving Luke by throwing Palpatine down the pit, Vader would have lived.

Anakin wanted to die, because he did not want to suffer in his suit anymore, and he probably thought that he may go back to the dark side. Anakin wanted to see Luke before he died so he asked Luke to take off his mask, Luke did, and Vader died.

dude, go watch ROTJ again, remember Vader's breathing before Luke takes his mask off, it does sound like he's dying. And it says so in the OS wich is approved by Lucas, why would it be a lie??

 

No, that was just a thought. And yes I remember Vader breathing, he was weazing, but Luke could of helped him. Vader was probably afraid of becoming a full machine. Why? Would you want to have so much cyborg placements and approvements, that it makes you almost 100% machine(I know he was almost machine but Vader probably didn't want to be a cyborg anymore).

Sorry, only the lightning killed him. when Anakin asks Luke to take the mask off, Luke tells him he'll die. Anakins response was that it's too late to stop that.

Actually it was Anakin Skywalker who killed Darth Vader.

Anakin SKywalker died because the lighting went through his suit, through his open hand, and effected the inside of his life support systems, therefore he died from being damaged by lighting.

 

Some think that Palps was using his power to keep Vader alive, the same power he used to save him in ROTS. When Palps dies, Anakin doesn't have long to live thereafter.

But that's just an unproven theory I don't believe.

If you watch ROTJ, you'll see that a part of Vader's suit "explodes" when he's getting hit with lightning.

 

What they said. The suit was what was keeping him alive, and the Force lightning fried the suit. Guess Vader's underlings were lucky that circuitry and Force lightning don't mix well, else some of them would've probably had deaths more unpleasant than choking.

 

This question is phrased wrong. The answer to "Who killed Darth Vader" is Anakin Skywalker. Anakin Skywalker killed Darth Vader when he saw Luke dying at his feet. The good that was Anakin Skywalker rose to the surface and destroyed the evil that was Darth Vader. Anakin killed the Emperor and was fataly injured in the process. The lightning pretty much destroyed his respiratory enhancer and made it impossible for him to live. Anakin layed dying at his sons side. It was there that the young slave, the Jedi Knight, the Dark Lord of the Sith and the Chosen One found peace.

I've never heard why Vader's neck is mechanical instead of bone when we see his skeleton as the lightning is bolting through him.
