An Earth style 1950s diner in a galaxy far far away, is that something you love hate or feel entirely indifferent about?

I'm sort of indifferent about it. If there's anything I dislike about it, it's not that it's an incongruity in the GFFA--just that it's so friggin' goofy.

I don't have any strong feelings about it one way or the other.

I like Dexters Diner. It has a cool, 1950s feel to it.

I like it. Obviously, it's primarily there to serve as one of Lucas's personal riffs (and I have no problem with that-the films are his creations after all), but from an in-universe perspective I appreciated how it served as one of those low key, calm before the storm moments that give you an impression of how the setting and in this case the character of Obi-Wan operate outside of the running plot. Attack of the Clones was the only prequel where moments like these were really able to find a home. I that's part of the film's charm.

I liked it. I thought it was an interesting way to explore Coruscant beyond the Senate and other standard locations that we had seen previously. Personally I like the idea of Obi-Wan going to visit and old friend for information.

I definately agree! One good thing about AOTC is you get more of a fell for what Coruscant is like as a planet...and it looks great!

It's a good old-fashioned diner, and although their really isn't a point to having it in the movie, it looks cool.

Looks a bit goofy, but fits in well with the Star Wars Universe.

I thought it was lame - GFFA huh?

    God, it sucked.

Thought I would see Biff and McFly horsing around in the scene.

Dex's Diner is always heavy evidence presented in the OT>PT defense case.

I dont know what bugged me more: The design of the diner or that lame robot talking about "Jawa Juice". \

I did like the Kenobi Dex conversation, but the scenery around them = bleh.

    American Graffiti 3: Electric Boogaloo

    Edit:

A good cut would be to go right to them sitting in the booth(with jukebox?) talking about the good ol times and then go right into the conversation once the audience is oriented with the new locale. No droid zipping along or Dugs hanging out.

I like it, but I wouldn't want to eat there. By the looks of Dex, I'm not sure that the kitchen is all that clean.

On another note, I always wonder everytime I see that scene, how in the galaxy Obi-Wan and Dex ever met and more so, how they've become friends. Dex is more likely to have known Qui-Gon, so I have always imagined that it was through him.

That's a very plausible possibility. I agree that it's more likely that Qui-Gon was friends with Dex and made the introduction to Obi-Wan when he (Obi-Wan) was still a learner.

I wasn't a fan. I'd have prefered some smokey bar, reminiscent of a 1930s speakeasy, than a 1950s milk bar. Reminded me more of Happy Days than Star Wars.

I thought it was a nice look at "ordinary" Coruscant, away from the Senatorial highlife or the orderly, cloistered halls of the Jedi Temple.

It also displays Kenobi's knack for lateral thinking which sets up his ease at the Mos Eisley Cantina in ANH very well.

Why wouldn't the GFFA have diners? Its inhabitants have to eat, and most of them aren't Jedi or senators or chancellors or queens. People with useful information can be found in all walks of life. Dex is a nice touch.

By the way, those prefab, deco-style diners go back to the 1930's. They just continued to be popular after WWII. ;) And take another look at Dex's. It has PT styling that approximates Art Deco... and while reminiscent of a classic diner, it's really its own design. See what is there, not what you expect.

The only thing that truly bothered me was the shoddy CGI on the Dex character..Why does almost every incidental character in the PT have to be CG??? I always thought it would be a lot cooler to have the voice actor for Dex portray the character on screen..i've seen the performance on the Puppets to pixels' Documentary, and it honestly had more warmth and style than Ewans awkward interaction with the CG Dex..which was sub-standard CG even in '02. The actual Diner didn't bother me though..the cantina was straight out of the westerns..The Outlander Club was a modern Sports bar..etc etc

I actually really like it. It adds to the lived-in feel that the whole Star Wars universe contains, and gives the part with Dex a personality that's just fun.

Yes, Dex and Qui-Gon were good friends, and the Jedi allow Dex to carry out minor, dubious buisness transactions in exchange for vital information that he's gathered from his days as a mercenary. Obi-Wan met Dex as a Padawan learner.

Exactly. A lot of times in the EU, diners or other social gatherings often contain a valuable source of information. That's what Dex was. An old friend who kept his ears open.

I loved the idea of Dex's diner. It brought a more realistic, "earthy" feel to an otherwise grand and rather exotic AOTC, as well as to the PT as a whole. There are scenes like that in IV-VI, but they are few and far in between in I-III. Having it here shows that even in those times there were still such locations, you just had to be in the right places in the Galaxy to see them.

Another AOTC example of this kind of feeling is when Anakin and Padme visit her family, and we see her old bedroom. Again, bringing the scope down abit to a more "earthy" and "real" feeling.

    Hate to disagree ....

But the bridge of a Star Destroyer or Jabba's palace or Watto's junkyard had more of a "real" feel to them ---- then a contrived early 60's malt shop.

GFFA? That's what they hype it as? Get real.

Agreed. I love to see different sides of Coruscant, and get a look at everyday life in the galaxy. Its interesting to see how regular people go about their business in the GFFA.
