When Obi-Wan suggests that Anakin is in danger, why is it that Padme, the only non-Jedi we've heard mention the Sith in these movies, suggests that he's in danger from the Sith? Are the Sith common knowledge in the galaxy? Did the Jedi tell the Senate that they are back and threatening the Republic? Did Anakin mention something to Padme about the Sith at one point or another? The line seems out of place to me.

I'd say Anakin told her about them at one point or another. I don't think the Sith are generally known about. With the Jedi trying to find the Sith Lord, but NOT being able to, I don't think they want it to get out. GENERALLY speaking, Sith are only know by the Jedi.

One exception is Tarkin. Although he doesn't call Vader a Sith in ANH, he does know of his power. Of course, he is with him during the construction of the Death Star in ROTS. So, it would stand to reason that the only people who know of the Sith are those who work closely with them, Jedi, and whoever the Jedi wishes to tell (basically, just Padme).

Thus another mistake by the jedi if they indeed told Padme of the sith.

In the draft before the actual film. The scene where Obi-Wan visits Padme after the Empire is formed, this is some dialogue about the Sith to back this up.

I wouldn't be suprised if the Republic history books mention the Sith.

Thats what I was going to say. It would be like ancient history though.

Not neccessarily. There are races that live for centuries in the GFFA so it wouldn't be ancient history for all the citizens.

Her husband is a Jedi, so she probably knew something about the Sith.

Also, Padme was a former Queen as well as a Senator. Presumably she'd know a lot more, about a lot more things, than most "ordinary citizens".

I always thought it was a little curious that Padme knew about the Sith danger. But I guess that's what you get when your banging the chosen one.

One thousand years ago, the Sith ruled a sizable portion of the galaxy. The Jedi and the Republic of that era defeated them, thereby uniting the galaxy under a flag of peace. Creating the current Republic. This is very much implied in AOTC and ROTS.

Sio Bibble: "There hasn't been a full scale war since the formation of the Republic."

Palpatine: "I will not let this Republic which has stood for a thousand years, be destroyed."

Mace: "The oppression of the Sith will never return."

Palpatine: "Once more the Sith will rule the galaxy and we shall have peace."

Ki-Adi Mundi: "The Sith have been extinct for a millenia."

I think it's safe to assume she knows about the Sith and what they used to do. Most everyone does. That's why Palpatine never tells anyone he is Darth Sidious. Why Darth Vader has the public attention. Who Darth Maul was and Anakin would've told Padme that Dooku was a Sith Lord.

My first thought is that she may have wanted to know who the dude with the funky black and red tatoos and red double bladed lightsabre that showed up on her home planet was. She was owed and explanation of that, at least.

My second thought is that the Jedi were not to speak of it to anyone. Of course, Anakin would tell her. There is something odd in the delivery of her line. Almost a "Oh, from this secretive sith guy you idiots are all worried about that probably don't even exist?" I could be off, but I felt a somewhat mocking (although concerned) tone in her voice.

My third thought is that she is a scholorly woman that probably studied the history of the Republic and knows a thing or two about the old Sith Empire. Tarkin probably knew this history too, but Sidious might have just told him and everyone else that the Jedi made up the Sith returning story to try to take control of the Republic.

Bold is what was in the film. The rest was cut.

    187 EXT. CORUSCANT -PADME'S APARTMENT-VERANDA-AFTERNOON

The cockpit of the sleek yellow Galactic Speeder opens, and a HOODED FIGURE emerges and walks onto the veranda. An ALARM GOES OFF deep in the apartment. The FIGURE stops before a security curtain that protects the veranda. C-3PO enters the veranda and approaches the FIGURE.

C-3PO: Hello, might I help you . . . Oh, it's you, Master Kenobi. Come in, quickly.

The security curtain disappears, and the FIGURE lifts his hood. It is OBI-WAN. The alarm stops sounding.

    OBI-WAN: Has Anakin been here . . . ?

C-3PO: Yes . . . right after the attack on the Jedi Temple.

PADME comes down the stairs in a robe. THREEPIO leaves.

    PADME: Master Kenobi . . .

    She embraces Obi-Wan.

    PADME: (continuing) Oh, Obi-Wan, thank goodness . . . you're alive.

OBI-WAN: The Republic has fallen. Padme . . . The Jedi Order is no more . . .

PADME: I know, it's hard to believe everything to which we've dedicated our lives is gone.

OBI-WAN: I believe we have been part of a plot hundreds of years in the making.

PADME: The Senate is still intact, there is some hope.

OBI-WAN: No. Padme . . . It's over . . . The Sith now rule the galaxy as they did before the Republic.

    PADME: The Sith!?!

OBI-WAN: I'm here looking for Anakin . . . When was the last time you saw him?

    PADME: Yesterday.

OBI-WAN: And do you know where he is now?

    PADME: (looks down) No.

OBI-WAN: Padme, I need your help. He's in grave danger.

    PADME: From the Sith?

OBI-WAN: From himself . . . Padme, Anakin has turned to the dark side.

PADME: You're wrong! How could you even say that?

OBI-WAN: I have seen a security hologram of him killing younglings.

    PADME: Not Anakin! He couldn't!

OBI-WAN: He was deceived by a lie. We all were. It appears that the Chancellor is behind everything, including the war. Palpatine is the Sith Lord we've been looking for. After the death of Count Dooku, Anakin became his new apprentice.

    PADME: I don't believe you ... I can't.

OBI-WAN: Padme, I must find him.

PADME: You're going to kill him, aren't you?

OBI-WAN: He has become a very great threat.

As PADME moves to sit down, she reveals her pregnancy.

    PADME: I can't . . .

OBI-WAN: Anakin is the father, isn't he?

    PADME looks away.

    OBI-WAN: (continuing) I'm so sorry.

OBI-WAN turns and leaves as PADME stares transfixed, not knowing what to do. She is worried and tormented. OBI-WAN takes off in the Speeder. She studies the japor snippet that is hanging around her neck.

Thanks, Moleman. Padme mentioning the Sith is pretty awkward, but in the context of the cut dialogue it makes sense. I think that cut dialogue would have added so much to the film. It's a shame it was cut.

It's rather curious how everyone seems to know of Darth Vader... Leia, the Rebels, the Imperial officers, Stormtroopers. I find it quite odd that the galaxy or at least those I just mentioned don't know that Vader is a Sith.

i think she knows the basis.they are evil.they are the anti jedi.

when obi wan tells her that anakin has turned she doesn t say : so waht ?? or turn where?? or anything like that ,what she answers clearly shows that she knows the stih are evil but i doubt that she knows anything else.

From those lines, it can be taken almost like shes confused about what the Sith are. Of course, those lines would have been much funnier if she mispronounced the Sith a few times. :p :p

I always assumed that because she was married to the one who would, "Bring balance to the force." She would ask Anakin to explain exactly what all that means. Also weren't Obi-Wan and Anakin sent to search for the Sith Lord in the Outer Rim. (It was mentioned in ROTS that is where he had been before going to rescue Palpatine)I would think he would tell her where and why he was leaving for so long.

Anakin would have talked about the Sith to Padme before. Just like he explained about the Jedi and being allowed to love. Also Dooku was already known as a Sith Lord in the scroll. Its was common knowledge by the time just before ROTS.

"War! The Republic is crumbling under attacks by the ruthless Sith Lord, Count Dooku"

I always wondered why it didn't say Darth Tyranus instead. It'd make more sense when saying "Sith Lord." It's like saying, "the evil Sith Lord, Anakin Skywalker."

Chancellor Palpatine, before he was known as a Sith Lord, also knew about Dooku's association. So somehow the Sith were known by then.

Padme had to have known about Darth Maul because of the whole Naboo incident, and then about Count Dooku since she believed him to be behind the assassination plotting and him cutting off Anakin's arm. She probably did a bit of research into the Sith's history.
