I just saw it and was wondering how people in this forum thought it had been "bastardized"

I believe it was going to be released sans the whole cancer thing, but was put back into the movie due to criticism.

I thought the movie was okay.

    Perhaps Shatner was involved.

So the movie was "bastardized" because they were going to remove the cancer subplot? But then they put that back in so now the movie is in its true form??

Also, why did this movie take so long to release? I mean, it was amusing, but it certainly didn't look like it was difficult to make.

    Yes.

Among other things, because of the huge editorial fight over the movie between the creators/fans and the distributors, mentioned above. They couldn't really move forward with releasing the movie until they resolved what it was they were releasing.

Solojones told me to boycott it.
I don't ask questions 'cause she's in the biz and knows what she(he) is talking about.

There's absolutely no reason to boycott it that I can see.

You all are a bit behind. The boycott was called off months ago, when the studio agreed to release to movie with the cancer subplot intact. That's why they changed the thread title to "We won!" From that point on, you were supposed to go see the movie. :p

Likely because the boycott worked. :p

As a film, the movie was obviously terrible. To look for cinematography or directing skills would have been futile.

That technicality out of the way, I loved it. I felt like such a nerd as I tried to answer the trivia questions before the characters. It made me think of all the time I've spent on the boards and of you all, and it made me very emotional.

    I LOVE YOU GUYS.

Not to mention the mass amounts of cameos were simply great.

So I don't get it. People were "boycotting" the movie because a subplot about cancer was taken out? Who cares? Why would that have made a difference? Was this supposed to be a tear-jerker or a comedy about nerds? And how did these people know that a cancer subplot was even in the original draft unless it was leaked? And finally, did this movie even get a major release? I never saw any commercials/trailers for it.

The cancer "subplot" was the motivation for stealing the Phantom Menace print so their friend could see the film before he died. Instead the film was reworked to drop the cancer aspect and the characters just became ravenous fanboys stealing the film before hand just to see it. It changed the meaning of their motivation and thus the very core of the film itself. The cancer subplot was the backbone of the movie.

It was released but only in select markets.

Ah. I didn't know that. The movie with the cancer subplot does sound better then.

I'm sure thousands of fanboys pondered this very question. In the end, those thousands of fanboys said to themselves:

    [image=http://wikiwars.wikispaces.com/file/view/LukeSkywalker.jpg]

    I care!

And I will use the power of the internet to get what I want!

People had already known the plot of this film after hearing about it at conventions like Celebration 4 and seeing clips from the (then) unfinished film. While the film was a love letter to Star Wars nerds, the suits saw it as something else, and attempted to spruce it up for wider appeal. Taking out the cancer subplot was meant to make the film more enjoyable for the rest of mankind, who would just assume the main characters were pathetic losers who had nothing better to do with their time than to travel across the country and break into Star Wars Mecca. The cancer subplot made the characters less idiotic and gave an excuse to see Carrie Fisher make a cameo as a doctor.

The other side of this is that members of the 501st costuming group donated their costumes, props, and time to help shoot the movie, and when they learned the plot had been changed from "Star Wars geeks attempt to help friend dying of cancer see TPM" to "Star Wars geeks decide to steal TPM before its release", all e-hell broke loose.

Sorry. I put a boycott on movies about cancer.
So either version is null and void with me.

So maybe the whole controversy about removing the cancer subplot actually helped the movie. Sort of how like the anti-semitic controversy with The Passion of the Christ gave Mel Gibson's movie more pre-release exposure.

Well it certainly gave it more exposure, but from what I can tell mostly only in circles that would have seen the movie anyways: Geeks and Star Wars nerds. :p

It's odd. Us fankids battled so hard for a wider theatrical release, which it (kind of) got. But DVD sales/rentals are extremely low. I think we just like to fight.

I can't rent it on iTunes yet. Should I just buy it or am I not a true Star Wars fan?

The Best Buy near me was sold out yesterday. I couldn't get this or the new Terminator 2 Blu-Ray, yet there were about 1000 copies of Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

Well I hope they're not sold out when I swing by Wal-mart on the way home. If they are I'll probably order it from Amazon.

Sounds like they underestimated the popularity of the DVD.
