Remember when Darth Sidious tells Luke in ROTJ:

?You want this do you? Take it, use it, strike me down with it. Strike me down with all of your anger & your journey towards the Dark Side will be complete.?

Suppose Luke had granted Sidious? request? Here?s what I think would have happened. In ANH, before Vader strikes down Obi-Wan, Kenobi says to Lord Vader:

?If you strike me down Darth, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.?

Vader strikes at Kenobi, when Obi-Wan merges with the Force leaving only his Tatooine clothes behind. Obi-Wan's unifying with the Force is what destroyed Death Star I. It seems that Sidious would have engaged in the Dark Side version of what Obi-Wan did. If Luke had struck the Emperor down, as Luke picked up & activated his light sabre, Sidious would have closed his eyes ala Obi Wan. Then, when Luke?s light saber touched Sidious? clothing, the Emperor would then have vanished into the Force as Obi Wan & Yoda did when they died.

What happens next? It would seem that Darth Luke (what would Luke?s Sith Lord title have been or be?) would then be the Master Sith & his father still the Apprentice, yes? Luke?s slaying of Sidious would further strengthen the Dark Side & it?s Empire & the end of the Rebellion would be unavoidable.

Just some speculation folks. This borders on aficionadofic, but it isn?t, not really.

i personally don't think luke WOULD have turned to the dark side had he struck down palpatine. well, if he did it out of anger and hate he would have, but luke seemed to have pretty good control of his emotions in RotJ. he could have struck the emporer out of knowledge that that would save his friends and end the war and bring an end to palpatine's rule. i think he had finally realized that when he decided to take his lightsaber, and i think sidious knew luke would figure that out, and that's why he planned for vader to block his lightsaber and then duel with him. cuz he knew what would REALLY turn luke to the dark side would be having him kill his own father out of anger and hatred.

I think Luke and Vader would have blown up with the Death Star

I don't think he would have turned, either. Surely a single act of agression and hatred wouldn't convert him completely.

It didn't Anakin when he slayed the Sand people. Nor Obi-Wan when he murdered Darth Maul. Different situation, but he was angry!

I don't think the Emperor really was intending to have himself get struck down. He knew that anything Luke tried, Vader would deflect. If he DID strike him down then, I doubt Luke would simply be a Sith Lord. Vader would take over his training and teach him the how to use the powers he's finding. But I don't think that was meant to happen, I think that entire speech and the resulting duel were meant to draw out the situation further. Make Luke angrier, make the hate grow even more, so that way if/when he strikes someone down, it would be in a fit of rage like the type that had him cut off his father's hand. THAT's what the Emperor wanted. Not just a spur of the moment act of violence, but one where Luke enters a state where he literally becomes a different person.

Sidious did not care if he was killed or not, because he had clones of himself to take his role after death. He could of got killed by Luke, but Sidious would transfer his spirit in his fully grown clone.
