Say qui-gon and obi-wan had defeated darth maul. We can assume that, had Qui-gon not been killed, he would have trained Anakin as he said he would, and Obi-wan would have become a knight and taken on another padawan. Do you think that, being trained by Qui-gon, Anakin may have not turned to the dark side? Maybe obi-wan wasnt a very good mentor, maybe anakin didnt really need a "brother" but someone more experienced.

Im not really suggesting anything about Obi-wans training, but just maybe things would have been different if Qui-gon had trained him instead.

I've thought this over for a while, and I've come to conclude that it's impossible to formulate a legitimate, sure-fire answer. So I'll have to give my basic opinion.

While Qui-Gon was an admirable Jedi, he was always something of a maverick. In AOTC when Dooku tells Obi-Wan "Don't be so sure" that Qui-Gon wouldn't join the Separatists, I believe Dooku actually had a point there. At the end of the day, Qui-Gon didn't answer to the Jedi Council or Republic. He had his own plans in mind, even if that meant bold defiance in the face of authority. That rebellious attitude would have rubbed off on Anakin from his first day as a padawan, and would have grown stronger, naturally, as the years elapsed. Anakin would never have properly "learned his place" at any point in time (as Obi-Wan ordered him to do in ROTS, after which Anakin very reluctantly agreed).

I like Qui-Gon, but I'm going to be honest. I believe that had he taken Anakin under his wing, then things would have turned out VERY differently... for the worse. We'd most likely have a Separatist Anakin who would turn to the Dark Side relatively early on in the game, in no small part due to Qui-Gon's paternal influence.

I don't think so. Palps would have always taken an interest in ANakin's training and they would have been buddies regardless of Anakin's master. Anakin was a weak human being anyway.

Nobody in this thread said that Palpatine wouldn't have been an influence also.

Throwing out the obvious future, if Qui-Gon were to not die and take on Anakin as a padawan, I think that he would have become the Jedi he always was meant to be.

Qui-Gon seemed to me, during the short time we are with him, a maverick, but as a father figure. Don't get me wrong, Obi-Wan was a good influence, but Obi-Wan was too indoctrined with the Jedi Code, telling Anakin " Don't lose your lightsaber" and " We don't exceed our mandate, my young padawan learner". Palpatine of course just seemed to be filling anakin's head with swiss cheese, saying things just to boost his ego, and then when the time was right, making him believe that the Jedi are holding him back ( Well, they were, but that's a different story).

Qui-Gon would teach anakin about attachment, if anakin still loved Padme. He would tell him that there was nothing wrong with loving someone, but don't let it get into the way of your mind.

    Something like that.

Like Kazanova said theres no known answer to this. If Anakin was trained by Qui Gon, I could see Qui Gon allowing Anakin's attatchment to grow. I could see Qui Gon sneaking visits with Anakin to Shmi as he grew up but I could also see Anakin being more rebellious and reckless then he already was.

I have respect for Qui Gon, but like it's been pointed out countless times- Qui Gon was his own Jedi. He reported to the council but he openly defied them if he felt it was the right thing to do. I could see Anakin helping Palps kill Mace and justifying it saying it was for the life of a Senator.

But like others have also said, Palpataine would still be an influence, and so would Padme. He wanted to marry her since he first saw her and because growing up knowing his mother he was softer then most Jedi. Qui Gon could either scorn Anakin when he did something wrong or be soft with him, I could see either possibility.

I don't think that Qui-Gon openly defied the council; he just thought of another solution to things.

I imagine Qui-Gon quitting the Order in the middle of the TPM-to-AOTC decade, telling Anakin his view and leaving him to his own choices, following another master or quitting the Order too.
Anakin should have decided to quit and free his mother with the other slaves, as promised.
Qui-Gon wouldn't have followed the Sith (too wise and Good hearted), nor had an active part in the war. "Grey" and neutral ex-Jedi. He should have been "available" to fight the Empire at the end.
But as for Anakin, I don't see how he could have avoided Palpatine's seduction. If the tale of Darth Plageis and its underlines are true (How to be sure since a Sith is telling?), then Palps had "an eye" on Anakin even before he was born!
But, being not a Jedi anymore, I don't see how Anakin would have been reunited with Padme... Without her and their love, there's no Luke and Leia... No new hope, excepting the living but very old Qui-Gon... The Throne Room on Death Star II would have had a very "geriatric" taste between these three mummies!

I highly doubt that. Qui-Gon was the single Jedi who KNEW that Anakin was the Chosen One. I believe he would have kept Anakin as a pupil, and later a very close friend, because of that. He wanted an active role in guiding The Chosen One down an idealistic (if not his own misguided) path.

I'd say that while Qui-Gon was rebellious, he was more of a "righteous rebel". He recognized the Council's authority, but wasn't afraid to tell them when he believed they were wrong. And he was always motivated by the common good and by compassion, rather than personal gain.

I think he'd have been a more understanding mentor than Obi-Wan, who seemed far too bound to the letter of the law, especially in AOTC. While he might disapprove of Anakin's behavior, he'd have been sympathetic to him when guiding him on the Jedi path, rather than Obi-Wan's more stern approach. I also believe that Qui-Gon probably would've picked up on Palpatine's negative influence a lot sooner then Obi-Wan and provided a more effective counter-balance.

Qui Gon was only a rebel in the sense that he railed against the prevailing wisdom of his time. In terms of the Force, it was he who was in alignment and everyone else who was at odds.

Despite this, I don't think Qui Gon or anyone else could really have prevented what happened. Padme would still have been around and Anakin's attachment to her would've overridden any other factor at play, even the wisdom and guidance of Qui Gon. As long as that attachment was there, Sidious had his vehicle for corrupting and manipulating Anakin.

I believe it would have gone very differently, i think Obi-wan is a great jedi, even a role-model for prequel-jedis. But he was never the right stuff to train Anakin. He was very inexperienced, too close to Anakin's age, never really wanted to be a father-figure to Anakin(,he saw him as a brother). Even tough that is what Anakin wanted and seeked in Sidious. Obiwan was aware of Palpatine/Anakin's relationship but only voiced his concerns at the end, when it was too late.

Qui-gon would be a father-figure to Anakin, he lacked power, but was wise in the force and life. And was one of the thinking-outside of the box jedi's. His relationship with his former master would also be intresting to learn from for Anakin. Even tough he loved his master, he became evil and turned Sith, Qui-gon would not follow Dooku down this path.

Anakin's relationship with Padme would be a tricky situation, i believe he would tell the council this with Anakin and would leave the jedi-order if they were unable to accept it. The ideas of being a jedi do not only apply to being a member of an orginization, it is greater then that. Just like if you are a christian, muslim, jew, you can practice religion as an individual. The force is not just situated in buildings, walls of the jedi, it's everywhere.
And Sidious would have a much harder time getting Anakin to fall, first off, Qui-gon would have immedeatly dealt with Anakin's visions of his mother, possibly saving her. And the second time, he would again help Anakin better understand what he sees. Qui-gon would also take the chosen one to confront Sidious and not be so blind like Mace was, and if the situation arised to save Qui-gon(his true father-figure) or Sidious, he would definitely choose Qui.

I don't think Anakin would fall if Qui-Gon was alive. He would allow Anakin some liberties which I think would help great with shaping of Anakin's character and personality. I even think Qui-Gon would support Anakin's relationship with Padme and be on his side if Council ever found out. But also, Anakin might leave the Order completely. Dooku did that, Qui-Gin saw many flaws (I don't think he would follow Dooku, but would probably leave as well). Anakin would leave somewhere hapily on Naboo and Palpatine would have a harder time at "recruiting" him. In the end I think the Jedi Order itself would have to make reforms in order to survive, but Sidious, without a strong apperentice like Anakin, wouldn't be a big threat.

But having the relationship with Padme wasn't really the problem. It was the fear of losing her and the desire to control that which can't be controlled which was Anakin's Achilles heel. I suspect that regardless of who was training Anakin, Sidious would always have been able to expose that weakness.

It could have just as easily gone the other way.
Different choices, decisions, better guidence, ect all could have saved Anakin. Anakin would have just as much chance resisting Sidious's trap as falling into it. Like you said, his fear of loss, and letting go of attachments. It's not impossible for him to learn these things, his son was able to, and young Luke was very much like his father.

I agree with DarthDuckie. Anakin's weaknesses had nothing to do with who trained him. His fear of loss and his need to be in control of everything were a part of him from the time he was a small child. I don't think Qui-Gon would have had any easier a time with Anakin than Obi did.

If Qui-Gon trained Anakin Skywalker, then the boy would have learned in earnest, how his focus could actually determined his reality. I'm also certain that Anakin would have learned how to quiet his mind in the most effective manner, as Jinn made both of those points Anakin's first unofficially-official Jedi lessons...

He would have become a far greater Jedi, had Jinn been his mentor.
But then the story would have sucked rotten eggs because we never would have gotten to see OT Vader.

Do you think that, being trained by Qui-gon, Anakin may have not turned to the dark side?

wow..I sometimes think about this.. and agree with what other people said - about Qui-Gon being a father figure for Anakin and things proceeding differently if Qui-Gon was still alive.

If Qui-Gon had trained Anakin the outcome would have still been the same. Anakin made bad choices. His own bad choices. To say it was Obi-Wan's, Yoda, or whoever's fault would be wrong.

Not, to mention that Qui-Gon was a bit of a rebel because he had been trained by Dooku. He was more a rebel than Obi-Wan for sure the way he was always going against the council and other things.

I think things may have actually been worse. It is my opinion, that Obi-Wan Kenobi's more strict adherence to the code is one of the things that prevented Anakin from flaking out earlier. If Anakin had been trained by Qui-Gon instead, watching his maverick streak time and time again, it would have only encouraged him to do more things against the Council's wishes. He already had Palpatine telling him he was possibly the greatest Jedi, feeding his ego, and considering Qui-Gon was the chief proponent of Anakin as Chosen One, he would have been having his ego fed from both sides instead of just one. That means, his arrogance is increased, and at a faster rate. Qui-Gon's example would have encouraged him to do things his own way even more than he already did.

Exactly, Obi-Wan slowed his fall considerably. The only person who I think would have been a better master to Anakin would have been Yoda. He was telling Anakin what he needed to hear every time Skywalker came to him for advice, but Yoda may have been able to phrase it in a way that Skywalker would have found more pleasing if he had been his master.

IA with this. Anakin needed strict guidance. He needed someone to tell him what to do; to show him 100% right from wrong. Qui-Gon was more grey, whereas Obi-Wan was more black and white, and an impulsive person like Anakin needs the black and white version.

There is evidence in canon - everytime Obi-Wan is away from Anakin he goes off the rails, and this is very deliberate by Lucas.

I dunno, I don't think it's a matter of either Qui-Gon or Obi-Wan being a "better" teacher, but certainly Anakin looked to Qui as a father figure much more. And I don't think it's a brother Anakin needed, it was a father. Palpatine latched onto him as that figure, in the void of Qui-Gon's death. Now, as far as Obi-Wan being his moral center, yeah, ya think? The movies aren't subtle about that at all. LOL.

Honestly though, the biggest thing that Qui-Gon, I think would have done, that Obi-Wan didn't, was to pay heed to Anakin's visions. I just can't picture the words "Dreams pass in time," coming from Qui-Gon's lips.

No, I'm not of the ilk that think Anakin should have just let her go.
