In the saga, I find the term ?Jedi? is used very loosely. Perhaps we need to re-evaluate the definition of "Jedi." When does Anakin actually become a Jedi? Does he? He was put on the council. Was he really Jedi Knight? We know he wasn?t a ?Master.? When did Luke actually become a Jedi? Was he a Jedi at the beginning of ROTJ, or not until he destroyed Vader?

This is what I?m talking about:

ANAKIN: ?I saw your laser sword. Only Jedi carry that kind of weapon.?
QUI-GON: ?I can see there's no fooling you Anakin.?

? so is Anakin right? Only Jedi carry the weapon? Luke carried one in ANH. Was he a Jedi then?

QUI-GON : ?He can see things before they happen. That's why he appears to
have such quick reflexes. It is a Jedi trait.?

So are you saying Anakin is a Jedi?

OBI-WAN: ?You will be a Jedi. I promise?
OK, so he?s not a Jedi yet. He just has ?Jedi traits.?

YODA: ?Yes, yes. It's a flaw more and more common among Jedi. Too sure of themselves they are. Even the older, more experienced ones.?
You are referring to Anakin. So you?re saying he?s a Jedi?

    PADMÉ: ?Anakin's not a Jedi yet. He's still a
    Padawan learner.?

Padme say?s he?s not a Jedi, yet in the script for this very movie, he is referred to as a Jedi throughout the whole thing.

ANAKIN: ?I'm a Jedi. I know I'm better than this.?
?so you are a Jedi? Who says? Oh yeah. The script.

EMPEROR: ?The Force is strong with him. The son of Skywalker must not
    become a Jedi.?

So Luke?s not a Jedi in TESB.

Yoda: ?Ah, your father. Powerful Jedi was he, powerful Jedi, mmm.
I didn?t think he ever reached that status. Did he??

VADER: ?The Force is with you, young Skywalker. But you are not a Jedi
    yet.?

So. It can be argued that you were never a Jedi either!

LUKE: "Greetings, Exalted One. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight and friend to Captain Solo."
Yoda didn?t say you were a Jedi yet! Oh, but the script in this film says you are. So who do we believe, the wisest Jedi or the writer of the script?

HAN: A...Jedi Knight? I--I'm out of it for a little while, everybody gets delusions of
    grandeur.

Maybe this sums it all up!

LUKE: ?Then I am a Jedi??
Well you?ve been telling everyone you?re a Jedi anyway so what?s the difference!

YODA: ?Not yet. One thing remains: Vader. You must confront Vader. Then, only then, a Jedi will you be. And confront him you will.?
    OK.

YODA: ?Luke...Luke...Do not...Do not underestimate the powers of the Emperor, or suffer your father's fate, you will. Luke, when gone am I (cough), the last of the Jedi will you be.?
But you JUST said he WAS NOT a Jedi yet!!

EMPEROR: ?Oh, no, my young Jedi. You will find that it is you who are mistaken...about a great many things.?
The Emperor thinks he has become a Jedi apparently.

So when do Anakin and Luke actually become Jedi?s? What do they actually have to do to become Jedi's. Is it just determined by thier masters? The way I used to see it, was force users are all Jedi's, but they are not "Jedi Knights" until they have completed their training but I am not sure if this is the case. What is a Jedi?

Any help here would be hot.

I think you become a true Jedi once you have mastered yourself - i.e. Let go of your fears.

Look at Luke. He only became a Jedi once he faced Vader and overcame his fears there. Thats what it's all about for me. Once a Jedi has mastered themselves in this way they can get on with their job - of doing whatever is right in the moment. Those that are full of fear are unable to do what is right in the moment as they are focused on their own fears.

Perhaps I should have re-phrased my question.

Why are Luke and Anakin Considered Jedis, when they are not actually Jedis? Why does Yoda contradict himself by saying that Luke is not a jedi, and then turns around and says that Luke is the last of the Jedi?

Because Yoda is talking as if Luke will succeed. "Once i'm dead and you become a Jedi, you will be the last one" kind of thing.

Jedi specifically refers to the order of the Jedi. There are other force sensitives, Sith, Dark Jedi etc. The Jedi are force sensitives devoted to a certain ideals and beliefs. Jedi are trained by other Jedi the various skills, techniques, beliefs and ideals that have been passed down for thousands of years. There are different stages of Jedi- youngling, Padwan, Jedi Knight and Jedi Master. Younglings are trained in a group and it is typically at this point where it decided whether or not the child is skilled enough to be trained as a Jedi. A Padwan trains more one on one w/ a master (usually a Knight that is still called master by the apprentice). When a master believes a Padwan to be ready for the trials, and passes those trials he is then a Jedi Knight and at that point is considered a full fledged Jedi. Then those considered the most skilled, wise and strong in the force and who have taken and have trained a Padwan are elected to the Jedi Council and considered Jedi Masters.

The terms Jedi and master are thrown around quite a bit as more of a sign of respect that don't necessarily mean they are Knights or Masters.

Padwans aren't full-fledged Jedi, but more Jedi in training.

Luke said to Jabba he was a Jedi Knight b/c saying "I'm a Padwan learning to be a Jedi" wouldn't exactly strike fear in him. Though at this point, he really is pretty much a Jedi Knight as part of his trial was to face Vader and not turn to the Dark Side.

He faced Vader once and passed the trial but lost the fight. Yoda felt that with this hanging over his head it would be an obsession (not just that he lost the fight, but that his father was an evil murdering Sith). He would not be able to be a full Jedi until Vader was vanquished (one way or the other). He must conquer it or it will consume him and he will never be able to fully embrace the force.

    Is this Paris Hilton?

A Jedi is as much an idea as an order. You cannot have one without the other. You could be "Jedi like", without being a Jedi. To be an actual Jedi (member of the order) you must meet its standards and they must confer it on you (standards which are defined by the ideals). Luke could never have claimed to be a Jedi without Yoda and\or Ben's blessing. However, he could have redefined the order and set up new standards. (Something I think he likely did anyway).

A Jedi is a kind of enlightened being, independent of silly worldly things like an order and such.
