In ROTJ, Lando realizes that the Death Star's shield is still up, and orders all the craft to pull up. Admiral Ackbar orders to the fleet to "Take evasive action! Green group, stay close to holding sector MG-7!"

What's "Holding sector MG-7"? And why did green group have to stay close to it?

I think it might be just Generic Movie Strategist Dialogue, meself :p

Perhaps Green Group was initially slated as the first group to move in, and now Ackbar wants them in safety till they can figure out how to get the shield down.

Holding in military terms usually means a defensive position-ie, preventing an ambush. So a holding sector might be someplace on the flanks of the Rebel fleet.

Green group (I'd assume this is capital ships) was just assigned to cover it.

Most of the military maps out there are in a grid, so you can easily find any given unit just by knowing what sector they are in. Its no surprise to me, that the Rebels in planning this attack, also gridded the Endor system to make it easier to know where ships are and to move them from one location to another. Its easier to say to go to Grid M-7 than move foward 800 kilometers laterally and 200 kilometers vertically and take up defensive positions. When Green group head to M-7 and take up defensive positions is a lot easier, and sounds cooler. :p

Basically, think in military terms and you've got your answer.

Actually, I'm more interested in the significance of "Admiral, we haven't any ships in sector 47". Why does that indicate to Ackbar that it's a trap?

I always assumed he was referring to the A-wings

Without Ackbar...none of us would ever have figured out that it was a trap.
