Well, I think most of Coldplay's songs are all depressing. [face_plain] But that's just me.

"Bones sinking like stones, all that we fought for. Homes places we've grown, all of us are done for..." - Coldplay - Don't Panic (should be called "Panic")

A somewhat sad song (I'd hesitate to call it depressing) that I like is Komm, susser Tod, from the End of Evangelion soundtrack.

For those of you who don't know German (it's from a Japanese anime, but the lyrics are in English...go figure), "Komm, susser Tod" means "Come, sweet death."

    Even the title's depressing. :p

I gotta agree. That or the Pillows Last Dinasaur is also very depressing.

Although, if you look at Komm Susser Todd in the light of Third Impact, it's not as bad as it seems. But just listining to it without a frame of refrence, it's really friggin sad. :p

Agreed on both counts (Last Dinosaur and the context of Third Impact for Komm, susser Tod).

Third impact is needed to take from the song what needs to be taken, especially the part where the song begins in End of Evangelion. :(

    Any teeny pop.
It makes you depressed that commercialism and capitalism is taking over the world, and is about to destroy it.

    Everybody Hurts by REM.

But if you listen to Shiny Happy People right after, it evens out.

Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton

Knowing what it's about make it all the more sad.

If you don't appreciate melancholy then you are bound to think like that. What you call depressing is thought provoking to others.

    Everybody Hurts by REM.

Is positively cheerful when compared to the track Sweetness Follows which is on the same album (Automatic for the people).

There's one by Indigo Girls which always makes me feel sad.

I don't know the title, but the chorus ends with "I'm in love with your ghost".

    Brings tears to my eyes.

    Peace,

The slow version of the theme from Requiem for a Dream coupled with the movie is probably the most depressed I've ever felt. I don't watch that movie much anymore, but I can't ignore the power it has over me. :p

Personally, I feel like slashing my wrists after I hear Estranged by Guns'n'Roses. Especially if it's a beautiful day, with the sun coming in through the window...

"I'm A Rock" by Simon and Garfunkel is pretty depressing. "The Carnation" by The Jam. "Mind Playin' Tricks On Me" by Geto Boyz. "Big Ideas" by Radiohead. "A Reminder", also by Radiohead. "Half A World Away" by REM.

Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead can be pretty sad. I saw them live and cried the whole way through.

Nothing beats Hallelujah for a good depressing song. Especially the Jeff Buckley version. It shouldn't be depressing, but it is.

"How Soon Is Now" by The Smiths. Come to think of it, anything by Morrisey is usually pretty depressing.

Someone said before "I am a Rock" by Simon & Garfunkel. I don't see how its overly depressing compared to some of their other songs, especially, "Bridge over Troubled Water."

I also think that "My Love" by Paul McCartney & the Wings is fairly depressing. However, my meaning of depressing has been jaded in the past few months.

"Sweet Surrender" by Sarah McLachlan. It's one of those songs that means something to everyone who hears it.

Also, "Mad World" tends to get me like that too. ;)

"Mad World" was the first thing that sprang to mind for me too when I saw the title of this thread. Though, now that I think about it, I don't find it sad so much as eerie, haunting, and thought-provoking. At any rate, a beautiful song. :)

And I'm going to have to disagree with somethingfamiliar's Geto Boyz selection. That song's only depressing if you happen to be as hi as they were when they wrote it. ;)
